Report

What a difference a day makes (three actually) to the weather. A pleasant  afternoons trailing and we could view the hounds and what’s more the fell was clear for the trailers.

Twenty five seniors ran and Galemire Grace, who drove most of the trail, kept on resolutely for Cath and Kenny, to register her first success of the season. She held on to beat Endure And Dawn who with a number of hounds were in close contention.

In the senior maidens Dark Ruby finished alone, although reluctant to cross the tape, she was a welcome winner for James and John Oldcorn, putting Flookburgh on the map!. Another Bay was second well clear of the remainder.

The junior trail, and a few punters thought that Persian Bay had won, well with 20 yards to go -yes! it was in front but stayed low while Thorn Dancer came down the mown track gaining valuable ground to win by three yards. ( Take note James Batty). Lady Anne was in third.

Where’s Wallie won the Open Restricted ,for Martin and Barbara , by 1/2 length from Keystone and the placed hounds which after some reflection were official announced but with that many photos of the finish and in hindsight might, and I say might,be in the wrong order.

I’m glad to report that Da Look was recovered the following morning, apparently he spent the night at a b/b.

Coming soon…

Report

32 runners but only half the field managed to complete the course, the puppy trailer reported that they were scaling badly and consequently some returned on the starting end and the ‘fly’ ones jumped into the scouts van, all hounds were accounted for and thanks to Robert and Emma for staying on the road crossing.

All I can say about the conditions is that if we’re encountering global warming then the Greens ( party ) should have been bussed up to Corney last night . You opened the car door and it bloody nearly blew away.

We entertained two people from Dorset who were thoroughly intrigued by the sport and laughed when told they wouldn’t be getting their gate money back . £8 for one trail welcome to hound trailing.

Report

May Day at the top of Kirkstone Pass and it stayed fine in fact it was a really pleasant afternoon  and it was excellent conditions for those 140 hounds that participated.

Just 15 seniors faced the starter and at 14 minutes Marli led from  Jenny’s Choice (see Video for the rest) and she kept up the relentless pace to just about the tape where she held on to a narrow victory over Endeavour the fast finishing Jazz Singer was third.

The Senior maidens and here former champion Dairy Diamond took on such hounds as Tagget and bitch produce winner Bedazzled. And it was Bedazzled who showed her rivals a clean pair of heels keeping up the Jacksons big race tradition. She was a four to one shot not bad for a pup that won eleven trails and ticketed thirty three times  and had finished second and third over the pup trail   .Explore was second and Miterdale force was up to her tricks again but got over the line for third in front of two more reluctant finishers.

The Puppy trail and a  field of twelve which included four maidens considering there are only nine pup winners, only Persian Bay was missing, it was a full turn out.

What might have been–Daisy Dream went head over heels and Bracelet missed the wall Bewitched ran wide and Huntsman’s Kraka drove most of the trail, So a deserved win even allowing for the ‘hard luck ‘ she was eventually chased home by kennelmate ‘Kooga’ with ‘Daisy’ third.

The puppy maidens and a tasty field of potential winners. And After five minutes running most of the thirty one runners were in contention ; all the hounds for all the trails cross the road at the same point every hound foot for foot on the trail except for this trail where the leader took a slight diversion and would you believe it every one bar the final hound followed it, you’d think they were tied together. What was in front? a red ‘un.

Onto the finish and Try Time, emulating kennelmate Try Again of two years ago, held off the fast finishing Meadow Josie and close up Paloma Faith to record a win for Jack and Jonty. By the way after his win the owners accepted the explanation of why the finishing trod was visible, trying times for a promoter !

And last but not least the biggest field of the day and the bigger the field bigger the certainty came to mind as last seasons pre -season championship favourite Little Messi trounced her rivals with an emphatic victory, Kerrymore finished second and ‘ Arnie ‘was third’. The time of the trail was the second fastest time recorded for the short trail you wouldn’t believe who is the fastest.

Report

A short and brief summary of the Evening at Oulton.

The Senior trail and would it be a slower trail without the Dearham kennelmates running – not according to the times. At the main road crossing ‘ Dixie’ led with Tan Ted and Prudence in close attendance, over the last road and Prudence had a narrow lead over Ted and it looked a two dog race but they didn’t reckon with a final burst from Dixie as she split them in the final strides for a head victory.

Bracelet and Persian Bay renewed their rivalry and once again the narrow victory went to Bracelet ,together with Arizona the three of them were inseparable on the beck edge, only for Arizona to drop back and finish 100 metres in third.

Butch had a run around on the finish , poor Anne was flying around like a blue-arsed fly .forgive the pun ,was he looking for ‘Sundance’.

By the way : Get well soon Mal!

Eden Rosa easily won the Open Maidens and in the final event John Loan’s Lone Rebel won denying the vice Chair of a double.

Report

Well, well, the second of May, David Crowe was clipped out ( beard) and it was freezing,,a cold easterly wind hit the Lamplugh  trail field and quite a few didn’t venture from their cars.

In the seniors the trail was over for last years pups before the first road crossing.

Fireman Sam, Endure, Songbird and Galemire Grace being amongst those not in the running. It was up to those with course knowledge  and Serenity finished well to see off Discard and Night Vision. Although no bets were taken on Serenity it was still the favourite now that’s Hound Trailing.

The pups and odds on favourite Daisy Dream was looking for her seventh win but she couldn’t contend with the Browns’ second string Persian Gold, Oban Express was third and the winners sister in fourth.

The open Maidens and Willow Bay’s win was another Barrow double ahead of the persistent Trooper Thorn ( five points) with the Saturday night hound Mr  Dec in third.

‘Arnie’  was making only his second public appearance off the season but there was support in the ring and that was justified when he won by a wide margin. He sneaked down  the finish even the officials were unaware of his presence Levitate was second a welcome ticket for John and David ,Get Up was third it might have been joint favourite with the winner.

Spare a thought for the four young ladies selling raffle tickets they looked frozen.

Nearly forgot Arnie is another of Kenny’s breed- He politely reminded me.

Report

By gum it was a raw night up Miterdale even the kettle wouldn’t boil.

In the Seniors Songbird was made favourite with Marli second in the betting and it was the latter that prevailed by a fast diminishing two metres from her sister Galemire Grace. Here I like to point out,as somebody keeps reminding me, the first two last night and the first three the evening before all fully related.

That’s for Kenny ( now maybe he’ll shut up).

The Pup trail and ‘Daisy’ scored the sixth win of the season but not before and I quote” the lighter coloured of the two black un’s ‘ had squandered a lead.

On reflection  that would be Thorn Dancer who finished third behind her sister Bewitched- Silver Charm was fourth  and they were clear of the rest led in by ‘Kooga’

The open Restricted and this was a resounding win for Where’s Wally, who responding to Barbara’s unique ‘call’ finished well clear of Mickledore.

Young Mark was a catcher and responding  to ‘first hound’ , ‘Where’s Wally’, looked all around sporting a big grin.

Report

A sunny day but a biting wind for the second visit to Helton.

In the Seniors Acacia scored her second win of the season for Ed and Lisa Crosby at the expense of Aspire and the improving Explore ( see video on you tube for hounds crossing last road)

Plan B led across the road in the Senior Maidens but he couldn’t hold off the fast finishing Barrow Bitch Willow Bay, another winner for the inform kennel of Norman and Lynn Brown and in third kennelmate Another Bay.
In the Juniors it was a three dog race and Bracelet got up on the line to deny the Browns another winning double, sisters Persian Bay and Sky second and third with Arizona ( Harry’s Owner) a closing fourth.

The Puppy Maidens and here was an opportunity for hounds to gain their first ticket notable Kaiser owned by Darren the camera man, Paloma Faith and Mystery Girl. The winner Chinook ,owned by our secretary Margaret and trained by the Holmes of Skelton won by a head and if you are a believer in coincidence then it was windy and a helicopter flew over the trail field.

The all-in were well spread out – the fittest at the front-the fattest at the back-no change there. Complaints in writing to Russel Dawson

Report

A dry but nippy day greeted hound trailers to the first of the season at Cold Fell.

And once more not without controversy ,although the trail has been used successfully for years the layout of the trail is a cause for concern and in fairness to everybody this should be addressed.

The seniors and when they showed opposite the field ,prominent were a number of ‘gingers’ which ones, at a guess Marli, Endure,Try Again, Endeavour, TanTed interspersed with the odd black ‘un ,Galemire and Sam. Onto the finish and here Marli threw away a winning chance leaving the door open for Songbird but they didn’t reckon with Night Vision who got up on the line and then avoided Joe ,as usual.

The pups handled the trail well with both of the Huntsmans cutting out the early pace closely attended by the favourite Daisy Dream.  Down the hill onto the finish and here Jazz Band led but he couldn’t hold off Daisy from registering a fifth win.

In the third race Persian Sun set a scorching pace and together with Doll and Cartier drew clear of the field- Cartier won by five metres with the third ten metres back ,they finished well clear of the fourth Mr Ant.

Flawless won the final event comfortably from Rickman and Get Up, fourth was ‘Wally’ who drove at half way.

Report

A second visit in a week to Miterdale and it was all change in some of the results much to the relief of the solitary bookie.

In the seniors Debra shot to the front in the final 30 metres to beat Marli who just held on from Capetown. What a difference, in four days ,from winning the maidens on Saturday to a Senior win on Wednesday,. As a pup in 2013 she had 43 places 4 of which were open wins. You might like to note that last years joint pup champion Songbird was fourth making it a 1-2-3-4 for the Westmorland hounds.

The Junior trail and a close finish and once more ‘Kracka’ won but only by a head from Daisy Dream with the third ,fourth, fifth close up.

The open Maidens and here a return to winning ways for Tagget, winner of fourteen trails as a 2010 pup and eleven senior trails in 2011 plus an International. and Bitch Produce . She held on from the enigmatic Miterdale Force,, whose antics on the finish are frustrating, but to the delight of Sophie she never faltered,  third and fourth were in close attendance. Quite a few of the runners got low on the fell and consequently struggled -they made their way back in ‘ones and twos’ .

93 runners on a Wednesday night, good going. And a note for future trails at Low Place–Alfie has dug a small grave on the field with a cross -I don’t know what’s buried there but it is too small for his ***********.

Report

A fine ,sunny night for the first of the Lazonby trails and the tea van didn’t run out of food. Fourteen in the seniors and the  early pace was set by Aspire ,the hounds deftly avoided the pigs who according to information provided had been ‘nicked’ .Somebody inquired ‘what kind of pigs’ answer two big un’s and some laal un’s. Onto the finish and JLS, confirming Sundays form ,got up in the  final strides to pip Jenny’s Choice. I’m not sure about the J but L S ‘might it be Laura Steele ,that is if I’ve got the script right.( see video on you tube) The pup trail and here Arizona showed his rivals a ‘clean pair of heels’ winning nicely although it has to be said they were four minutes slower than the All-In-nevertheless it compares favourable with times for the first trail at Lazonby for pups in the past. The all-in provided an excellent finish with Razzle Dazzle a head in front of Westgate Gypsy.

Report

Firstly I would like to compare the number of hounds running over this weekend with 1975,40 years ago, then 242 ran.

This weekend 221 ran ,not bad for a sport in decline. I know that trailing has seen better days but the ref hasn’t started counting yet!

Helton, and for a number of kennels the season started today- including Black eyed pea , first run and a win over J L S who led over the last road contrary to the commentary.

All the trails provided excellent fare and typical of Helton -nothing altered much on the uphill finish.

The pups had an early throw and one or two ran wide before the last road but on the whole the results were an indication of the excellent trails.

In the all-in former champ Dairy  Diamond ran -from one of the kennels making a belated start to the season

By the way who ever put the cup on my rear wiper- it was still there when I got home.

Report

Last Saturday it was Many Clouds today there wasn’t a cloud in the sky for our first venture into Miterdale and eventually Low Place.

John Crone had answered a ‘will you come call’ ( Bookie) and after the well backed Serenity had romped home in the Seniors things didn’t look to rosy,

but the rest of the meet wasn’t so bad.

In the Senior Maidens Trooper Thorn and Debra were well clear and just as well as they both missed the last wall gap as they straightened up Debra finished fast to deny a wandering ‘Trooper’ a win.

The pups and here ‘knowledge can be a dangerous thing’ as all of them ,without the exemption of two, went on the practice trail. The two Huntsmans gained a sizeable advantage and despite a valiant attempt by the odds on Daisy Dream they held on for a one – two for the Glenridding kennel.

In the restricted trail Thorn Dolly finished well to deny local Miterdale one by a length to register a double for Kentmere Kennel of Burrows/ Satterthwaite.

Fifteen old timers in the last and the destiny of the bookies hopes  were in the balance up to the line where Night Shadow nipped Da Look much to the his delight.

A pleasant days trailing made better by one owners delight on finding out his hound had finished sixth.
