Report: A pleasant evening in the Kentmere valley for four bookie less trails nevertheless the ‘crack’ was still there, the pies came via Wigton in the back of a red ‘bus’ and 49 runners took part.

In the seniors and at halfway ‘Choice and ‘Rascal’ had a good lead but as they came onto the long meadow finish they had been joined by the two Huntsmans

It was a Patterdale 1-2-3-4 as’Choice’ maintained a two length lead to beat kennelmate ‘Rascal”. with ‘Jenny’ and ‘Jewel’ third and fourth.

Thorn Dancer was a bit behind after 3 mins running  where Jazz Band was  driving and he also came in front closely attended by ‘Dancer’ only to run straight on and give Marlou and Jenny’s a ‘shout’. Marlou led up the finish but ‘Dancer’ asserted in the final fifty yards to win by five lengths Jazz Band was a close third.

In the non winners Meadow Josie, making the long journey from Carlisle, finally showed some of her pre season promise when she held on for a length victory over Eden Rocco and third was McCoy .

Onto the last and at least we could see them!  Up to  now Stanley and Carol had two that  had finished last., would it come in ‘threes’? Not if Colleen had anything to do with it. As they came onto the finish the first group all ran straight on and after ;’righting’ themselves they were joined by another group making ten hounds with a winning chance. Colleen emerged from the ‘pack’ to notch a length victory from Doll and Casa nova

Report: A fine afternoon after a damp start for the Jimmy and Pat Glaister’s memorial trails at Mirkholme ,a special thanks to the Irving family for their donation of a bag of dog food for the two maiden winners

And a reminder to those complainers about the trails especially the last obstacle. Every attempt was made to ensure the trails were trouble free and unfortunately some obstacles ,by their very nature, provide a challenge and the last fence is no exception. Some get it right some don’t- apart from removing it or providing ‘steps’ I’m afraid  it’s there to jump and as the saying goes ‘that’s hound trailing’.

The senior trail and at halfway it was ‘Arnie ‘ and ‘Grace’  driving. Onto the long downhill finish and downhill it is -Huntsman’s Jenny had a ‘yard or two’ but she soon gave way to Endure in front of Galemire Grace ,who had a tumble and that left Arnie and Endure to fight out the finish . Endure over jumped the last fence and landed steeply giving ground away and ‘Arnie’ took full advantage getting up in the final ten yards to win by a length.

The senior maidens and once more the ‘last’ had its say in the outcome as My Way made a spectacular leap and completely ‘turned turtle” handing the race to Foxparke Yabbadabbadoo { under scored in red} who beat kennel mate FP Hurry On and I’m glad to say My Way recovering to finish third.

The winner was spelt three different  ways on the bookies boards and I’m not surprised.

The puppy trail and after five minutes running the notable  absentees from the race were Thorn Dancer and Persian Sky. Up front on the finish ,well they kept chopping and changing and then they scaled to their left ,-all but Lone Rebel who stuck to the trail and won easily . Artist ran on for second and apparently was in front when they scaled. ( So I was informed)

The puppy maidens and ‘guess what’ the notorious last had a hand in the outcome once more as both Cracking On and Eden Rossi lost ground. Billy Bowe was left with a good lead and though not the fastest of finishers had plenty in hand. The afore mentioned finished a respectable second and third.

That brings us to the final trail and a one ‘horse race’ .The only danger to ‘Messy’ was herself as she looked around for company on the run in but, as she couldn’t see any, straightened herself up and collected first ticket. Razzle Dazzle finished second for ‘I can manage on my own ‘ Russell  Dawson (Wendy is in Ireland)

A good afternoon’s sport and to end the day a question was asked ‘ who ate the chocolate out of the raffle prize?  I bet Jimmy is having a quiet chuckle to himself when it was revealed ‘who dun it’

Report. Once again a fine start but a dismal end weatherwise and for the second time this week the last trail was finishing in ‘half light’.

In the seniors Huntsman’s Jenny came with  a ‘few yards’ but on the slightly uphill finish Lady Bethan ,challenged and went away to win , Endure finished third ,in touch and not far behind.

The pups and at least half a dozen were in with a chance and eventually it was the Kendal hound Venus who headed Sliver Charm on the line with ‘Daisy’ right behind in third .Championship contenders Huntsman’s Kraka and Persian Bay were unplaced.

In the non – winners Dairy Thunder led but was passed in the final 50 meters by Les Tyson’s Lady Anne , and getting a ticket was  five year old Borderman, a testament to patience and perseverance for Helen and Geoff.

On to the last and another Restricted trail with a silent finish, or perhaps in the light the owners Couldn’t see them, any way Thorn Dolly won by a length from Tinkerbelle. Whether ‘Dolly’ was jinxed or not when you slip them you have no control ‘ if it’s going to win it will ‘.( see blog)

Report:  No hassle with the SP”s as the only bookie bet without three of the four winners. The seniors and it looks like they had made an early mistake, for at the first road, one or two fancied hounds were well behind, here Two Tone led .On the long downhill finish and here Marli had a nice lead until she stopped and turned around giving the advantage to Quiet Linnet, then she straightened herself and fairly flew the last 100 meters to win comfortably, ‘Linnet’ was second in front of Little Messi.

The junior trail and as the night worsened ,mist covered half of the finish.

Out of the gloom and it was Menorah in front of Bewitched both hounds ran wide and Persian Sky took full advantage and came away to win by 10 meters from a bunched ticketing hounds.

Cracking Mover showed a nice ‘turn of foot’ to win the maidens and once more it was a bunched field for the tickets and as the night got darker  it didn’t effect Trent (in joke)but  it didn’t help the camera man as the hounds were in the last field and we were still looking up the fell. Thorn Girl had every chance but settled for second place and  the rest finished two by two.

Hawkshead Show Tuesday 18th August.

Results:

Seniors 1 Jenny’s Choice 2 Huntsman’s  Jewel 3 Ladybird 4 Overwater Arnie 5 Keystone 6 Mickledore . 8 Ran Time 31.48 Also Ran  Langdale Ranger -Great gable.

Pups   1 Huntsman’s Kraka  2 Ran only one finished. Time 24.43

O M      1 Tinkerbelle 2 Casa nova 3  Out Of The Blue  4 Silverbelle 5 Ran only four finished.Time 22.13

Report; Hawkshead Show and only 15 runners . Odds on Jenny’s Choice finished well clear of kennelmate Huntsmans Jewel  Ladybird made up a lot of ground to finish third.

The pups and ‘Kraka’ had the clock to race against which she beat by 17 seconds.

And in the maidens the only danger to Tinkerbelle was herself when she scaled on the finish , stopped to pee but she righted herself and won nicely from Casanova with Out of The Blue claiming third and her first ticket of the season.

Open Maidens. 1 Miterdale Prim 2 Foxparke Magical Mist 3 Foxparke So Be It 4 Foxparke Turbo 5 Foxparke Hallelujah 6 Miterdale Force. 17 Ran Time 18.38.

Report; Wasdale valley on a beautiful Monday evening, breathless scenery ,blue sky and dark forbidding fells and the mountain rescue helicopter and a bloke with a parachute.

The senior trail and only five runners when they crossed the road a blanket could have covered four of them only ‘Ranger’ was out of touch but it wasn’t long before he was in front and the further they went his lead increased.  He won by the proverbial’mile’ chased home by  Miterdale Proper.

The puppy trail and a chance for Daisy Dream to get back on the winning trail but she was thwarted by the all the way success of Dairy Lightning . I say all the way  but at one stage he was passed by two herdwicks, obviously more sure footed in the rough terrain.

In the last and here we had a trail dominated by two kennels ,the Steeles and the Napiers  .Miterdale  Prim won by a 100 metres with four Foxparkes finishing close together then another Miterdale  There were that many purple hounds in the last that Caroline was roped in as slipper and catcher , she drove home with purple hands.

Also Ran Black Eyed Boy.

Report: Into the Rusland valley for the annual Rusland Show and a warm day interspersed by the odd shower.

First up ,the seniors and at half way Jenny’s Rascal or Huntsman’s ? ( watch the video) led from Lady Bethan but on the long, undulating finish it was Jenny’s Choice who showed in front of ‘Bethan’, just before the line ‘Choice’ veered slightly giving ‘Bethan’ a winning chance but she failed by a neck .

Only six runners in the pups and not long ,after a tardy start, into the trail , Jenny’s Delight the favourite returned and that left the race at the mercy of Marlou and she duly obliged winning by a huge margin. I know there were only six runners but it was Donna and Richard’s first ticket with Vesta .

The largest field of the day was for the maidens and once again testing the’ rookie’ judge was Casanova and Tinkerbelle ,the former winning by a neck in a thrilling finish.  This was a one/ two for the Langhorns  By the way the Rookie Judge was the ex- chairman having a rare day off.

In the final race Kerrymore got the better of JLS in neck and neck tussle throughout the last field ,she finally prevailed by a dog length. Once again there were only seven runners but it was Silverbelle’s first ticket for Allison and Martin.

Open Restricted 1 Cherish 2 Howgill Blondie 3 Carrick 4 Full House 5 Howgill Blondie 6 Thorn Girl 9 Ran Time 20.15.

Also Ran :Maybe -Celtic Brave -Celtic Spirit.

Report: A hot day welcomed all to the vale of Rydal for the annual hound show, dog trials ,hound trails and when you had found somewhere to park ,it was well worth it!

Thirteen faced the starter in the seniors and a hard ,strenuous trail faced them , the predicted time around 35 minutes, it’s a pity nobody told the PA as he called the hound men into the ring after 15 mins running.

The distance or weather didn’t bother Tommy’s Legacy following Saturdays win he fairly bounded down the finish with the sports maiden winner Bedazzled close behind, these two were well clear of the favourite Jenny’s Rascal in third.

The pups and only six runners and a surprise in store as the Kendal hound Artist lost her maiden tag with a runaway victory ,she was well clear of Marlou and Jenny’s Delight ,the favourite Thorn Dancer was a well beaten sixth .

Two down and one to go for the punters to recover and to help them ‘Cherish ‘ the Restricted favourite duly obliged with a facile win over Howgill Blondie.

Open Restricted. 1 Starlight 2 Kerrymore 3 Littman 4 Mrs McGregor 5 Miterdale Princess 6 Da Look.  9 Ran .Time 18.51

. Also Ran Pip’s Lad- Glenwood Mist -Miterdale Torment -.

Report: The senior trail and I don’t think that the first three ever altered ,  the kennel mates Endure and Endeavour driving with ‘Ted’ waiting to pounce and pounce he did – taking up the running in the last ten meters and holding off Endure by a head, Endeavour remained in third. It might be pointed out that five out of the six were all bred out of Dignity ( So Ken said !!).

The junior trail and Daisy Dream is long overdue a win and she looked to have done so but in the last few strides Bracelet ,herself recovering from injury, stuck her neck out for  victory..

Sundance in the open maidens won and in doing so lost his non-winners status,he had a tussle with ‘Force’ all the way up the finish but pulled away in the final strides .

And for Geoff and Barbara Jones Starlight ‘s a  victory in the last was an overdue event ,, even though it was a ‘quiet’ finish. Kerrymore was making ground and with Littman in third these three were well clear of the rest.

Also Ran Izzabella -Keystone -Acacia – Jimmy Choo -Cancellara -Foxparke Bash On -Celtic Spiri.

Report. 53 runners at Dearham and two kennels provided 20 of them and out of those 13 got tickets.,all seven local hounds were placed including two firsts and a one two was recorded for the Foxparkes in the restricted.

In the seniors only five runners and it looked a formality for Prudence. She had the lead at most road crossings and it was a surprise to see her on the  finish with three hound in front but she soon got her lead back and won by ten meters from Silver Spangle.

The junior trail and this was an exciting finish between Silver Charm, Persian Bay, and Santino, a spectacular leap at the last gutter helped ‘charm’ to a length win over the other two who were neck and neck to the line- that was Persian Bay’s  fourteenth second place! (if only).

In the Open Maidens , Barton finally got a reward for consistency with a handy victory over two Foxparkes and in the last two foxparkes again ,this was the restricted trail but it was two veterans that showed them the way home. Quiet Linnet apparently made a mess of the ‘gutter which put paid to her chances and then it was ‘Blackbird’s’ opportunity to win but’ Homebound Bound’ ‘did’ her in the final strides.

Foxparke Blackbird, as she is now called, is  having a resurgence in her career after returning from Ireland. You may recall that she had four seconds to Enoch over the Dearham trail in 2009 and coincidentally finished the season with fourteen seconds.

Report. The HTA’s P R man Robert Airey AKA Wak did a sterling job in keeping our visitors from the tourism industry fully informed about proceedings ,myself I told them that during the interval we had a cup of tea from the caterer , only thing is he didn’t turn up.

The senior trail and 6/4 shot Marli duly obliged the favourite backers when she came in front and didn’t look in any danger, even a quick look didn’t halt her momentum as she won from Night Vision  ( Neil’s on holiday -Joe’s in charge – so watch out!).

The Pup trail and another favourite duly obliged when Lone Rebel held Off the sustained challenge of Persian Gold by a length, long time table leader Daisy Dream was third and the consistent Bracelet close behind.

On to the last and ‘ What’s in Front?   nobody knows , while us lesser mortals, by process of elimination, guessed it was Littman, and so it was, winning very comfortably from Mrs McGregor second just ahead of Starlight.

Report: And on Association day the new rule allowing an extra five minutes on a new trail was implemented therefore you could say that this was the first meeting in the history of hound trailing that all trails were of senior length.

That doesn’t diminish from  the work the area Committee put in,  which hasn’t been all plain sailing, even Dickie Smithson came out of retirement. Thanks to them all and a special thanks to the two trail layers -Rikki and Phil. Also thanks to the Uldale Commoners for permission to run.

The Senior trail got under way and immediately some hounds went ‘right hand down’ which alerted the spectators to ‘ open ground trails’ and early reports indicated that a few of the fancied runners were ‘out of the race’

Onto the long downhill stretch before the finish and ,the perils of long distance identification , as a white hound showed with a lead and which one of seven was it?

All of them were mentioned but in hindsight it was probably Huntsman’s Jenny as she made up one of the four hounds that were well clear.

Onto the final straight and in front were Tommy’s Legacy and Jazz singer . These two had a neck and neck race to the tape where ‘Tommy’s won by a dog length with Lady Bethan and ‘Jenny’ in third and fourth the rest were well behind .

The Senior maidens and’ although a tidier start’ it wasn’t long before things went wrong and for no apparent reason seven hounds struck the finish and went the other way, one hound came up the finish and a number returned on the outgoing trail. One theory ,apart from blaming the hounds, was that the trails could have been joined by the numerous ramblers . This was unfortunate and the ‘area’ had no option but to declare the event void.

The junior trail, and after a lengthy delay,  only twelve hounds got under way, and the talking point was ‘how long’ and which will handle the length. Well the answer was a Michael Watson one / two when the two Persians together with Marlou came with a clear lead.  ‘Sky’ winning from ‘Gold’ and with Marlou they were a ‘countrymile in front of the rest ,led in by Billy Bowe.

The pup maidens and we had a race when about ten hounds were in with a ‘shout’ but on the downhill stretch to the tape and finishing like the wind was Chinook, owned by the HTA secretary Margaret Baxter and trained by Malcolm and Ann Holmes and the apple of grand daughter’s Hannah’s eye.

The Open Restricted and a wide open event, the eventual  winner Simply Rascal ,fourth down the fell  , showed in front and fairly scooted away from Mrs McGregor and Celtic Ty ,for ‘ Lou’ Pounder and the ever watchful ‘Lloyd’.

The concluding race was for the old un’s and Da Look aka ‘Trent’ won in the style of a younger hound putting yards between himself and Thorn Girl. I quote – someone who shall remain nameless . ‘ He has no chance the trail is too long’  Obviously never heard of the saying ‘ an old dog for a long trail’

Report  As the leaders crossed the last road it looked certain to be a 1 2 3 for the Patterdale kennel but Hope banished that idea with a fine third, ‘Rascal was runner up three lengths behind.’ Choice .

The juniors and Lone Rebel took the sponsors money with a half a length victory, denying another Patterdale double, over Jenny’s Delight and Thorn Dancer a close third, the question then asked where was Arizona ? blame the promoter, I would!.

The third trail and seven hounds were clear and it was Miterdale Proper ,a popular winner for Sophie ,who with brother Mark ‘cleaned up’ in the terrier show, winning by five metres from Thorn Girl and Cool Return.

Short and Sweet as most of the afternoon was spent ‘ gallivanting.

Report. We have seen and reported many unusual things in hound trailing annals and last night was no exception. For, as the leaders  came down the fell at halfway, they ‘put up’ a fox and they quickly caught it ,but in the modern tradition let it go to ‘fight’ another day. This episode ,for a while, changed  the running order but as they meandered out of sight the big three were back in front and that is how it remained to  the finish ,the favourite Celtic Malone passing the ‘looking around’ Marli in the dying strides with ‘Grace in Third’.

The junior trail and the consensus of opinion  was that they didn’t alter much all the way round and onto the finish Persian Sky showed a fine ‘turn of foot’ to win from Bracelet ,second again, and Kendal raider Paloma Faith in third.

The day was no drawing to a close and it was getting gloomier by the minute but there was enough light for Mr Ant who’ got up ‘ to beat Doll and confound his critics who said he was on  honeymoon.

And I am afraid to report that due to torrential rain and imminent darkness we did not see much of the open restricted. But we saw enough to know Levitate had won and David Hogg quoted as saying ‘ it doesn’t like rain’.

I supposed you noticed the free car parking area was cordoned off and so it should be. The event was run for cancer research as was under the banner of the Wils Logan and BIrkett Lawson memorial trails.
