Report. Nice to see some old faces at Shap this afternoon including Kevin Swanton who,  looked likely to be more at home on the Thames , with his ‘Eton boating hat ‘ perched on his head.  Ian Graham , who in hindsight, would have backed five winners.

The preview for the premier trails was not without its controversary , did all the hounds go round in the seniors or was it case of running low.

Why did the maidens and to a lesser extent the seniors  scale on two occasions and in the puppy maidens  7 hounds returned after a few minutes and why were they allowed to run in the restricted trail after entries had closed.

Anyway!., the seniors and a fast finishing Washington deprived Bedazzled of her first victory of the season with Endure a close third.

The senior maidens and Jazz Band had poached a winning lead on the fell and although the ticketing hounds made relentless headway in the final mile , it was library conditions for ‘Laddie  and he won very readily from Sugar Ray.

The pups and only 9 runners , Eclipse got the better of  Manna just before the line , Just Mick was third and the rest strung out like a Monday mornings wash.

In the puppy maidens there were six well clear on the fell and on the finish two had a few yards , Step Up and Adventure- in third was Sweet Harmony ,who fairly flew in’.

In the last and it’s quite conceivable that ‘Diamond’ was never headed and he won comfortable from Razzle Dazzle , with an interesting fifth – Bewitched!.

Also Ran Tinkerbelle – Miterdale One.

Report. Well the wind blew but only slightly, and you could see Blackpool Tower and Millom’s top trainer , much to his ‘delight’, 10/1 and not a penny on , won with Ladybird  who  responded well to the ‘ whistle’ ( all bar Jimmy) and beat Lady Bethan by a couple of lengths with the ticketing hounds close up.

The pup trail and a major upset when the well odds on Jenny’s Aura suffered a rare defeat . Miterdale Rusty won with plenty in hand , Overwater Hally was second and Jenny’s  back in third.

The non- winners and a 1- 2 3 -5 for the Napier kennel , Foxparke Fandando – Homeward Dude and Peggy Sue filled the first three places , the ‘Boss’ was missing and Robin and Neil and I quote ‘ showed her how it’s done’. I suppose you could call it a ‘ Purple Parade.

Flawless held on for a  head victory over Santino in the restricted with Great Gable and Highness a close up third and fourth.

In the veterans and the favourite gave the lone bookie a clear book – Simply Rascal came clear on the uphill finish to win comfortably from Kerrymore and Artisan.

The trails were in memory of Dougie McClean and he would have fully appreciated them!

Report.

Would they or wouldn’t they?, that was the question as the six hounds set off?- Get round after Tuesday nights fiasco! Well they did-  although not without a few stops on the way.

As they went past the ‘field’ Debra led from Arizona, Thorn Dancer was in third after scaling badly, Arizona stopped and then went with ‘Dancer’ and when they showed again ‘ Dancer was in front and the fourth hound ‘Ty’ was making headway. On the testing finish and it was Arizona and ‘Ty’ who raced together with the former winning by a couple of lengths.

In the pups and the ‘General’ seemed to have thrown away  the race when he landed on his head jumping the second last but like his owner , got up , shook himself, hard as nails these hounds! and ran on to hold Telstar by a length with the fast finishing Silver Dusk in Third.

The open maidens and making most of the running Cool Return just held off the late challenge of the Tebay hound Black Mist. And in the veterans old rivals Artisan and Silver Spangle  battled it out , victory once again going to the Kendal hound Artisan, who looks destined to be veteran champion.

Report. Better late than never – Pat Black and Willie Mark -just for you .

We will start with the non- winners and considering I was rounding up sheep, it might not be exact ,- Apparently a fox crossed the trail just in front of the hounds and consequently the first three , preferring Reynard to aniseed, took that option. Yorkshire Lad, Jazz Lyric and Stand By were clear at the time and this left the door open for – wait for it- Summer Rose, a genuinely overdue success and for Craig especially who was on holiday at the time ( no wonder it won ).

One wag reported that a new Foxhound Pack had been created and that the new Prime Minister had repealed the hunting act. ‘Twit’!

The senior trail and an exceptional race.  Galemire Grace led for most of the trail but had to come from behind to get the better of litter brother Endure , his brother Overwater Arnie was back in third  and his sister Marli in Fifth.

Jenny’s Aura was a comfortable winner of the pups and in the all-in it was silent night as Jazz Band sent them all asleep, Highness and Flawless were third and fourth , they were supposed to be in the seniors but nobody told Nick that the trails were at 6.15.

Report.  Having run over the ground at least seven times this season it was inevitable that at some stage the seniors might make a mistake but to make a complete hash of it was completely out of character. What went wrong , well the juries still out, but it seems that ‘guesswork’ was to blame and it took upwards of one hour to round up the nine runners. For this we can thank Neil ( dog warden Brown who brought back five hounds , one in the passenger well and four hidden in the boot- we half expected Dr Who to appear.

In contrast the two short trails were run well and in fast times – Silver Dusk winning  easily from The ‘ General ‘ who was claiming his 11th second place and Quiet Linnet holding on to a length victory over Issabella.

Report.

A fine night for the second of the Cold Fell trails and  in the seniors Marli was made 6/4 favourite and she led for most of the trail, Jazz Singer ,now on the comeback trail, was always prominent and together with Daisy Dream chased home Marli, in fifth place and also on the comeback was last seasons puppy champion Persian Bay..

The pup trail and the finish of the night as Misha was pipped on the line by Huntsman’s Loyal with the fast finishing maiden Kenmore in third.

The maidens and course specialist Lady Anne won readily from Mr Ant and Kinniside Joe.

Welcome back to Tommy Newall who was making a belated start to the season having been sidelined with illness.

Also we wish the best to Graham Birkinshaw, George Birkett and Jerry Meneaud.

Report.  On behalf of the festival committee I would like to thank all farmers and landowners for their support and .on what was a diabolical day, the trailers, gatekeepers , scouts  who deserve a medal and not forgetting all of you who supported the trails as the saying goes ‘ We must be crackers!’. We can report that all was safely gathered in and a special thanks to those who spent time looking for Songbird.

The trails and starting in running order ,first on the seven trail programme was the puppy maidens and was one of the trails where visibility was at its best. The hounds were well bunched throughout and on the downhill part of the uphill finish, Speed On had a couple of lengths lead over Boston ,who put his best foot forward and provided connections with a consolation win after missing out on the International.

The Non- Winners , and after a scale on the fell soon after the start 13 of the 18 runners returned to the start ( hence the double entries) that left five and unfortunately Hunter’s Sparkle was disqualified for interference , hence only four were recorded as finished, these were led home by Kinniside Joe in front of Hunter’s and Summer Rose these three were well clear of the other two. You might note that three of the five were seniors.

The day was now worsening and visibility was down to 100 yards , the next trail was the veterans and for all  their experience ,perhaps that was the trouble, they scaled badly in the’ leaps’ trail field and the result was that some ran the proper trail , the others joined the trail at the halfway point and some went on the starting end and some on the finishing end. Now if you’ve worked that out , well done and consequently the trail was declared void,. Simply Rascal who went AWOL for a while was reunited with her owner via the dog warden.

The weather was getting worse , a number of hounds were withdrawn and in the Senior trail on arriving at the three quarter stage  I encountered as many followers on the road that were on the field. Leading at this stage was Daisy Dream, Quiet Linnet with course winner Jenny’s Choice a close up fourth and out of the gloom , over the line it was the Patterdale three – Jenny’s Choice, Jenny’s Delight and Huntman’s Jewel, making it a memorable day for Denise and the absent Jenny ,who was sidelined with tonsillitis.

.The senior maidens and at the three quarter stage it was Jazz Band , Sugar Ray, Sambuca  and Blueboy, as you can see from the result that the order hardly changed . Neil Brown’s Sambuca winning by a length from Jazz Band and the rest of the ticketing hounds close behind.

Now, with hindsight, the start of the last two trails was altered and the hounds were transported to the ‘ Leaps trail field for the start this move had the desired effect and the last two trails seemed to run a lot smoother. reports from the pup trail were that General James, Jenny’s Aura and Just Mick were clear. And appearing out of the gloom came the ‘General’ just in front of ‘Mick’ and Jenny’s and another Huntsmans’back in fourth.

The final trail of what had been an extremely trying day and the washed out supporters saw Bedazzled with her winter coat finally removed, appear like a ghostly apparition, out of the gloom followed by most of the runners in single file, Dairy Lightning, Razzle Dazzle, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all.

At the time of writing this report the bright red waterproofs were making their way to the washing machine and the next HTA meeting , the premier trail, what price mist and rain.

Report.  Seven Runners , Seven Tickets , two winners, the Bland/ Barrow bandwagon rolls on , first three in the seniors and could have finished in any order as all three were together as they came down the field and into the beck before climbing up to the line. The final order being ;Jenny’ Jenny’ and ‘Jewel’.

In the juniors the table leader Jenny’s Aura won by a ‘country’ mile from Miterdale Copper, who got up on the line to deprive ‘Hally’ of second place. A mention of the minor tickets, Popeye ( the sailorman) delighting Shirley and Raymond stopped at home and Ronnie’s Rascal in the capable hands of Tom ( we’ll be here all night) Poss.

And if there’s a prize for patience then it goes to ‘Greenie’ with Supersandy didn’t run last season and has been progressing this season . He held on to a diminishing lead to win by a couple of lengths from Quiet Siskin.

The restricted trail and there were a number of hounds in with a shout crossing the beck where Menorah poached a lead and won readily from jenny’s Rose.

Now time for a Rhyme:

Mary had a little lamb

it’s little legs did go

in and out and roundabout

avoiding capture ,no great deal

but it didn’t count on young Mark Steele

who, with a dive, took both back legs

a tackle ,who at a pinch

was superior to Keith Lynch.

Report.: No sooner said—- Prudence is made favourite to get off the mark , but !—-  together with Arnie prefers Hare to Aniseed and they  end up being picked up on their way back. Try Again who was leading at the time took full advantage and benefiting from others making mistakes won easily from an improving ‘ Lexie’ with the Dearham doggy paddler in third.

The pups seem to come from all directions and four of them were well clear, victory going to Silver Dusk from Quiet Otter and lowside raider huntsman’s Loyal in third.

The Open maidens and mixed fortunes for Sue when ‘Rose’ won and Belle went AWOL, Sunset Ridge ran his usual race and gained another five points and in the veterans the runaway leader in the points competition , Artisan, justified her odds on price wining easily from Silver Spangle

Report. A misty night on Helton Fell for five trails on a Monday Night.

Highlight of the evening ( apart from a late showing by ‘Jonesy’) was the re-appearance of Marli – Misha- Little Messy and the first appearance of Cotto and not forgetting a television interview to be aired later, not on BBC or ITV but ,wait for it , You Tube.

The trails and Endure back from injury staked his claim for the championship with a length win over Galemire Grace and Marli. I have been asked to point out that the first three are all related and who bred them? the person who told me to point it out !!!

The mist descended for the pup trail and emerging were five hounds well clear, victory going to  Misha , her first open win , beating Eclipse and the improving Sweet Harmony. It might be pointed out that the puppy trailer was using the GPS for guidance in the mist , it showed him the way but didn’t stop him falling A*** over T**, some you win some you lose!

We have mentioned those who have been trailing for years with a limited amount of success and ‘Hutton Hazel’ comes into that category, so it was nice to see her get a reward for patience when Hutton Molly won the non winners.

In the Maidens one half of Ant and Dec, not on a Saturday but Monday, namely Mr Ant crossed the last road with a comfortable lead and won readily from Rickman ( with a tilt of his trilby- good afternoon).

The All In saw Jazz Singer on the come back trail , the reappearance of Overwater Bessy and also Little Messy, who set off like a ‘scalded cat’ and was never headed in the fastest time of the evening.

Just a passing note ,the trail sign at the bottom of the hill was put there by me but that didn’t stop the trail manager from half inching it.

And a welcome to the Lake District and their new home Steve and Christina Watts from Oldham. Another trailer , got room for a kennel , keen as mustard and willing to learn,(  ?)

Report.

Many thanks to the work put in by the Ulverston Area and their volunteers, after the disappointment of the first venture, they turned things around and under adverse weather conditions provided five trails with exciting finishes.

Thanks to all the farmers and landowners, sponsors, and, without naming them in case somebody’s missed, the scouts , trailers ,gatekeepers  etc.

The main event of the afternoon on what was an extremely windy one was the Bitch Produce and the odds on favourite and table leader Jenny’s Aura justified her short price with a ten metre victory over Overwater Hally, the breeders prize went to the owner, out of Jenny’s Pride by Endeavour and her sister Canny Mover was third.

And continuing with the Open pups her litter brother Miterdale Copper won with siblings  Just Mick in third and Huntsman’s Loyal in fifth. The latter two hounds were unlucky as they ran wide on the finish but all plaudits to ‘Copper’ and the General who provided us with another photograph finish, the result being known with a shout of delight from the ‘Miterdale Steeles’.

The day started with the seniors and four hounds were vying for honours in the end they were shared between Lady Bethan and the fast finishing Washington with Huntsman’s Jenny just behind and an excellent run by Daisy Dream in fourth.

The senior maidens , and not for the first time a complete b**** up. Firstly and this is only conjecture and with hindsight, the hounds were walked to the slip practically down the finish, then lined up in an arc causing a concertina effect  after slipping, then all of them missed the road crossing and did a tour of the starting field , some then struck the trail ,whilst ten others jumped the wall and after a ‘meeting’ struck the finishing end and ran the trail in reverse. The trail was declared void and first past the post in the right direction was Persian Prince , a Westgate, Trooper Thorn and in the other direction Sambuca, Sental, another Westgate and one from Ennerdale.

Just a thought – A westgate went one way and one went the other I wonder if they acknowledged each other as they passed.

The largest field of the day and here the enigmatic Thorn Fire was having a going day and made a winning leap over the tape to justify favouritism beating Dawn, Razzle Dazzle and Eden Rossi in a bunched finish.

In the veterans and a double on the day for the ‘undertaker’ with Louise , when Simply Rascal got the better of Kerrymore in another head bobbing finish, with Artisan a close third.

Marton provides magnificent  views over Morecambe Bay and The Irish sea over the Furness peninsula but when the wind blows , it blows and when it rains , it rains. It’s called ‘ Trailing weather’ and we love it.

Report.

Wet but mild and is it essential that we trail on Thursday before a major event? Only seven hounds contested the first two trails! Nevertheless they produced two exciting finishes- in the seniors Debra had a good lead after 15 minutes and although the favourite Bracelet joined her on the finish , it was Debra that came away to win by a few lengths.former champ Prudence was well behind at halfway but finished in tremendous style to get third and wont be long before opening her account for the current season.

In the juniors Just Mick was trying for a quick double but this time He was Eclipsed By Eclipse and in the non- winners it is always the case of winning for the first time but sometimes it is the owners of the winning hound that are having a rare visit to the winner’s enclosure. Lisa and Graham Whitfield with Cool Enough being the latest , perhaps a good omen for the next two weekends !, It’s cool enough for him it’s cool enough for me, Sugar Ray Robinson.

And in the All-In- well ! Cartier won easily from Thorn Fire in the impending gloom, the rain came shortly afterwards but all was safely gathered in!

All roads lead to Marton on Saturday for the Bitch Produce which has been shortened from the last trail, by about a pup trail!

Tipster competition will be organised by Heidi and Baz’s tips are ——————————————- Take waterproofs- watch out for Geoff’s ditch- LOL

Report. ‘ It’s a funny old game’ quote from footballing, well so is hound trailing.

In the Redmain seniors Tommy’s Legacy and Arizona were joint favourites and when the hounds showed at half way  it  was Dairy Lightning who was in front and he stayed there to almost the tape where Bracelet and the fast finishing Washington passed him, the two favourites were well back in umpteenth place. Those hounds at the top of the Senior Championship could be soon looking over their shoulders to see dual Champion Prudence in contention.

The puppy trail and a fine example of when you win a maiden an open trail isn’t far away, and Just Mick did just that. He and Huntsman’s Loyal stole a march on their rivals and finished well clear, Mick winning by the shortest of heads.

In the maidens and Jazz Band led them a merry old dance . He and Sunset Ridge established a clear lead and he kept going to the ‘ sound of silence’ and got over the tape ,quite a rarity for ‘Laddie’, to win easily .

The All -In and a win for former champ Endure who should be back on the winning trail soon.
