Report. firstly the distances- seniors one length

juniors ten lengths

maidens  head.

A slightly different report, one from outside as seen in running.

The senior hounds came into view above Applethwaite Common and at first it seemed to be a two dog race but as they weaved their way down towards the only road crossing another three hounds sighting the two in front soon joined them. As they crossed the road Overwater Bessy was in front of the Patterdale four and it transpired that she was ‘caught short’ on the finish and a unique first four for Denise,Jenny, Denis plus kennel hand Alan with the two Jenny’s beating the two Huntsman’s.

The pups and Jenny’s Aura cut out most of the work with ‘Hally, the General and ‘Alfie’ always in attendance. Yorkshire Lad aka ‘Alfie’ made a mess of a gate that shouldn’t have been jumped and consequently lost all chance, in the meantime Hally had gone to the front but the difficult part of the trail was to come. What happened ,no idea, only that Jenny’s notched another win over chief rival General James.

In the last there was fourteen hounds within 30 yards of each other crossing the road ,there would have been 15 if Alfie hadn’t done a circle of the field prior to the road, no reason just a sight seeing trip before coming home. Now some of these hounds jumped the gate correction they didn’t jump it they demolished it. And in what is not an easy trail perhaps  it suited the veterans as three of them ticketed.

Report. Once more it was Cold Fell , not the trail but the weather, Cold ,wet, windy we’ve had it all this season and a bit of low cloud as well.

In the seniors it wasn’t surprising that the trail was around five minutes longer than usual. But that doesn’t dismiss a win for ‘ Arnie’ who showed on the finish with ten yards lead and kept up the pace to the line with Lady Anne in second and an interesting third in Kinniside Joe.

The pup trail and another win for ‘Hilda’ aka Buble who finished so fast the man with the video missed it. Manna was first, correction second,

The visibility was getting worse and a Westgate won was it Rose or was it Belle perhaps little weed knows ! It was Rose , Belle was second , Silverbelle that is and Aspire third.

In the last the 4/1 shot Jenny’s Rose won by ten yards from Mr Ant

Report. As you have probable realised by looking at the all in runners that there was a problem with the juniors, as it was 6 runners came back after three minutes and of those who went 7 hounds had a good lead. They included the prolific General James who won easily from Eclipse.

The night started fine and ended up with visibility down to 50 yards. At the first road in the seniors Endure was already well behind but at the second crossing of the same road Debra and Dawn had a good lead with the rest closely bunched.

The reason ,and it was all to clear, as the hounds went up the Ward Hall finish, only to stop and turn, wondering whether it was Bridekirk or Ward Hall, well if they used their noses they would have known it was the ‘Moor’ and that applied to a number of them on the finish as they bore left.

In the end Bracelet got the race from the close up Dawn and the ticketing hounds also in close proximity.

That leaves the open maidens and the even money jolly had a race on her hands pressed on all sides including two old timers in Taggert and Da Look, but she held on for a win.

And the all in run in thick mist was won by Capetown  from another veteran Artisan.

Report  93 runners in the first of the seasons meet at Calebreck , ( follow the sign from Hesket if you can find it) .

Watching the seniors, after ten minutes, as they climbed the fell away from the Fellside trail field- not one deviation , a splendid sight and what led- Marli and Capetown. Onto the downhill finish and the favourite Marli never broke stride and won handily from Lady Bethan and Overwater Arnie.

In the pups the first three were clear and another step up the championship table for Jenny’s Aura with win number 15 .

The open maidens and Mrs McGregor gave her supporters a fright when she practically stopped on the line and turned , but she had enough in hand to beat Cracking Mover and the only pup in the tickets , Yorkshire Lad ,in third.

The final event and Canny Girl looked to be a certain winner but she couldn’t contend with the finishing speed of Eden Rossi ,who got up on the line to win with Razzle Dazzle ten yards back in third.

Report. On a fine day with not a chicken, goat ,home produce etc in sight.

We were treated to five excellent trails marred only by the winner in the puppy maidens receiving a card for interference and subsequently being disqualified or scopped out ( Alan’s description).

The senior trail and Endure ,after leading for practically every yard, was touched off in the final strides by Bracelet with the improving Persian Bay a close third.

The senior maidens and ‘Belle’ beat’ Rose’   The Westgates  were joint favourites and as  they came onto the long finish together, the owner was surprised when the slower finisher won ( Sue was surprised  Sarah wasn’t) Siddadle aka Pussy Galore (007) was third.

In the pups three had a nice lead and the favourite Liz put distance between them racing away to win easily from Silver Dusk and Just Mick.

The pup maidens were well bunched and after Dan’s Lad disqualification the trail went to Accolade from Breeze and Wanted ( d or a)

And finally the 4/1 on shot Artisan won very easily in the Veterans and the title looks to be ‘ in the bag’.

Report. Well what can you say , the mist comes down and with a bit of luck you find your way , unfortunately in this case it wasn’t to be and the two trailers who thought they were heading towards Ambleside were in fact heading towards Grasmere,, it one of those things , it isn’t the first time nor will it be the last!. But ! according to one or two they should have known were they were going obviously they have never walked on a fell with there eyes shut.

The three short trails went without a hitch and the large entry in the last trail was  due to the mist.

In the Golden sovereign puppy trail , General James from Cleator Moor, the second favourite , fairly romped down the finish to a cheer that was heard in Ambleside, and in the process landed some hefty wagers. In second place some 30 yards adrift was Overwater Hally and a similar distance behind was the favourite Jenny’ s Aura.

The puppy maidens and another West Cumbrian raider Foxparke Fandando held off Ronnie’s Rascal in a bunched finish with only yards covering the first seven.

And in the restricted trail emerging out of the gloom ( not NIck but Flawless) who with Highness completed a 1-2 for the Troutbeck kennel this put a shine on what has been a lean season for the Wilsons and the biggest smile was Tia’s.

Also Ran.  Black Mist – Quiet Siskin – Irish Pride.

Report . The disappointment in the senior trail was the early demise of Prudence, who was picked up having been stopped by a herd of cattle and in the last trail the winner received a yellow card for interference ,which was ‘over the line’ so High Style kept the trail.

Issabella came home with a handy lead over Bracelet and liz and Quiet Otter had their own race in the juniors , the former winning by five yards.

Vets 1 Artisan 2 Olivia 3 Watt Look 4 Kerrymore 5 Da Look 6 Silver Spangle. 6 Ran Time 19.31.

Report. The senior trail produced the finish of the season when four hounds were separated by a dog length. Unfortunately Santino who finished second ,lost that place for interference promoting Prudence to second beaten a head by ‘Arnie’ with Bracelet a head behind in fourth. Perhaps Bracelet was unlucky as she ran high approaching the tape and Who said ,as I placed the camera on its Stand  ‘WE WONT BE NEEDING THAT!

The other three trails went to form with Sambuca and Artisan comfortable winners and Quiet Otter who finished well to beat the reluctant ‘Hally’.

Report. A fine night, good visibility, good trails, what more could you want.

Wasn’t on the field for the seniors, filmed the seniors crossing the last road where Jazz Band was leading.

The pup trail devolped into a two-dog race and Champion elect Jenny’s Aura notched another win at the expense of the ‘ General’ who like ‘Custer’ was second again.

The pup maidens and a bunch of seven , with the lead often changing, but on the switchback finish it was a Foxparke 1-2 when Fandando bt Homeward Dude ( see ‘News’)

In the All-In , a precursor for the sports, shows and premier trails was won by Westgate Rose by a neck from Jenny’s Choice and Westgate Belle a close third – see you on Thursday.!!

Report.

Started off wet , then the sun came out , the waterproofs were on then they were off. In the seniors and Galemire Grace could count herself unlucky as she made a mistake at a crucial stage and gave away ground to the two leaders Marli and Endure who finished in that order ‘Gracie was third and Lady Bethan fourth , these four were nicely clear of the fifth Capetown.

The senior maidens and Mr Ant and Leyla had the race to themselves and simarlarly the third and fourth. The remainder of the field were well bunched led in, for his first ticket of the season , by High Style.

Now the next two trails and Russ and Wendy Dawson scoring a rare double with the unlikely combination of Queen and Michael Buble, ‘ We Are The Champions’

Apparently Canny Mover threw away a winning lead in the pups but that doesn’t diminish Queen’s win,” named after the group ,No! named after royalty” , No! “what then?”- try the Mother-in law. quote Russel!

Making amends for Les and Pat in the last was Canny Girl who lost her maiden status when beating Eden Rossi with treble seeking Dawson’s back in fourth with another group ‘Razzle Dazzle’ – never heard of them – its a tv programme.

Report. Once again the short trails were marred by some of the hounds striking the senior trail in reverse. The organising body must , in fairness to everybody concerned, review the trail and if possible make corrections to alleviate the situation.. To sum up out of the seven juniors three went astray , in the pup maidens all 17 started in the wrong direction but luckily struck the senior trail at a different angle and went the correct way and in the veterans three hounds didn’t falter, and after going back and forth on the footpath nine of them followed leaving five to go awol. The conjecture from the last race is if three went without hesitation ,why didn’t the rest?.

Back to the trails and ‘Batty’ was in winning form and after Ladybird’s narrow victory over Debra said,  ‘what price for the senior championship’. Last seasons champion Prudence was in the field but lost all chance when scaling badly at the start eventually going away next to last. Also running this seasons joint leaders who finished third and sixth.

The senior maidens and if there was an award for perseverance then John and Ann Hoggarth would be candidates. Skidaddle ( red line) put a smile on both their faces when coming away from one of the six Foxparkes to win easily, Yabadabadoo ( red line) was second and that’s what ‘Hoggy’ was shouting.

The next three trails and enforced scouting meant two of the trails were missed but in the pup maidens Sweet Harmony , the favourite, held off the strong challenge of Accolade who seemed to ease after looking a likely winner 30 metres out.

And who should turn up on her yearly visit none other than the ex promoter of Oulton trails – Marion , who travelled there with her bus pass !

A theory ,from a spectator, as to why the hounds scaled badly. It is because there are two fox dens in close proximity to the trail and  another 100 yards away are the hunt kennels !!!

Report. A really competitive senior trail and the favourite ‘ Gracie ‘ cut out the work together with Persian Bay and Endure, who on the finish was unlucky has he took a tumble in the rushes, leaving the door open for Persian Bay who was caught and passed by Galemire Grace in the final ten meters.

The two short trails were marred by the hounds scaling badly in the first five minutes and quite a few in both trails were ‘ out of the race’ – the pups were led in by Eclipse who won comfortably from the improving Sweet harmony and simarlarly in third Manna.

The maidens and it took the cameraman a while to split kennel mates Mr Ant and Miss Ellie ,eventually ‘Ant’ got the verdict , Persian Sun was a close third and the ever present Kinniside Joe in fourth.

Report. On one of the warmest nights of the season ,it became hard work for the hounds especially the seniors and they finished one by one spread over a quarter of an hour. Langdale Ranger was missing for most of the evening but was found mainly by the power of the media ie ‘facebook’.

Now it is not often you can report that two non- winners have won at one meeting. But tonight Telstar and Tempress both lost their non- winners tag.

Telstar came away on the uphill finish from his two rivals , they were well clear and Tempress fairly flew the last ten yards to beat veteran Tagget in the maidens.

In the All- in trail six hounds finished clear with Debra beating Dawn in the freshest and fastest time of the evening.
