Report. Only 31 hounds for the fifth meeting at Bridekirk and Bracelet notched up win number ten to go joint leader of the senior championship and win number three over the course of which the times of the seniors has only varied by one minute over the season. Once more Endure had to settle for second place beaten by a couple of lengths with Persian Bay an encouraging third.

In the pups and a minor upset when Cool Enough notched his first open victory of the season when he pounced in the final strides to deny Liz of her fourteenth victory and in the impending gloom the cows on the finish played a vital role in the result when they impeded the favourite Issabella and although Try Time was also impeded he escaped trouble and won comfortably., Issabella finishing only fourth.

Persian Sky finished third ,a marked improvement with ‘Denzil’ in fourth.

The pups and restricted trails went to the ‘jollies’ making three on the night ,the same three as last time at the same venue. Both winners won handily , Jenny’s Aura was chased home by Sweet Harmony ,these two were well clear and Canny Girl had plenty to spare over Menorah and Mr Ant.

Report. An excellent days trailing and if the times were correct only 6 seconds separated the last three trails.

A decent field lined up for the seniors and Bracelet was made favourite and she duly obliged with a hard fought win over recent maiden winner Westgate Belle. Bracelet had cut out the early work together with Endure with the remainder in close contention, Washington finished well to deprive Sambuca of third ticket with last seasons pup champ in fifth.

The junior trail and running on strongly up the long finish was Liz who won by ten yards from the fast finishing Buble, Just Mick and Quiet Otter ,  latter  two who were ‘in the mix were third and fourth

The open non – winners and any number of hounds were in the race as they came off the ‘moor’ and crossed the lonning. Onto the finish and a heap of hounds were vying for honours but at the line it was Jazz Lyric well clear of ‘Peggy Sue ‘ and the sailorman – Popeye.

In the final trail, Cracking On put distance between her  rivals to gain an easy success from Cartier and Starlight.

Another tale – continuing the saga of Buble- a bitch with a dog’s name and its pet name is Hilda.

What do think Les to the naming of Buble ,with the  kennel name Hilda, a bitch not a dog.

Les Reid replied almost apt.

.” With a name like ‘Leslie’ how can I respond “.

Report. Another warm evening at Ward Hall and  just 33 runners faced the starter. Once again it was the maidens that took center stage when Sambuca took the opener to register her first open  win of the season and non-winner Meadow Elsa took the last race, interspersed by course winner Silver Dusk..

Sambuca got the better of Bracelet in the final stride with joint favourite Arizona back in third in the seniors whilst ‘Dusk’ had an easy victory in the pups and ‘Elsa’ in the last , who ,in the words of her owner ,’ cannot finish or drive’  kept on well to overhaul Black Mist and Silver Spangle to win and in the process 4 maidens and a non- winner went a begging!.

Just a special thanks to Mr and Mrs Conway who came to the rescue of the chairman , who had a puncture on the road over Wrynose and without their help would have been there all night.

Report. A new venue thanks to the Farmer at Bowderdale,. Mr Paul Naylor and you are right in thinking ,is that any relation ? yes! Joss Naylor’s son.

On the slope of the hill, where it is an advantage to have one leg shorter than the other, overlooked by the towering crag of Yewbarrow , overlooking the dark waters of Wastwater.

The seniors, and as they dropped down the trod towards, what can only be described as an unusual finish, I’ve no idea what they were as I was on point duty at the last obstacle. Out of the beck ,up the banking, under the fence ,up the bracken bed and down the finish.  A blind finish of 50 yards and on its own was Huntsman’s Jewel, Ladybird well clear in second place.

In the pups Jenny’s Aura and Overwater Hally finished on their own , ‘Aura winning by ten yards , only seven finished as the remainder struck the senior trail and went for an evening stroll .

The open maidens came in a bunch preceded by a herdwick who led them down the fell and never looked like getting passed, there were plenty in with a shout as they appeared under the fence, and over the wall, but some hounds veered of left and some went right, on reflection perhaps if they hadn’t been exercised  in that direction earlier it might have been different as it was it was left to ‘Alfie’ and Out of the blue to  fight out the finish, the latter getting up on the line to win.

Finally Eight runners in the last and Free Spirit held on to beat Cherish by a yard or two.

In conclusion it would have been better with a more suitable finish but ‘beggars cannot be choosers’ And , anyway, the coffee cake was excellent and a small price to pay for a stiff neck ( looking up all night).

Also Ran Freebie – What Look – Tinkerbelle – Cancellara – Olivia – Jacob McClink – Da Look – Jimmy Choo.

Report. Another warm evening and it made hard work for the 59 hounds that took part.

The first two events saw the winning hounds lose their maiden tag , firstly Westgate Belle, who came clear on the long downhill finish from warm weather specialist Tommy’s Legacy and Canny Girl, and then  followed a win by the consistent Sweet Harmony, who also came clear from fellow maiden Popeye, the favourite Buble was well behind.

In the maidens the first three came well clear and last years winner ‘Cracking Mover ‘ repeated the dose with a win over Aspire and Eden Rocco.

The veterans and in the failing light ,once again there were three well clear Miss Ellie beating Tagget and Artisan.

Report. I suppose it would be quite difficult to give a report on the Wasdale Trails without mentioning the Low Place kennels in Miterdale, simply because they won all three, there you are ‘done and dusted’.  Next>

As you turn left at Santon and head up the road towards the head of Wasdale, after a few hundred yards you ’round a bend’ and in front of you is , in my eyes, one of the Lake Districts most stupendous views with Kirk Fell commanding the center, Lingmell and Great Gable to the right and Red Pike to the left and nestled next to the trail field St Olaf’s church.

First up the seniors and it’s a good job it was a fine night as the trails were advertised a quarter of an hour late and like the proverbial ‘bride’ the starting end trailer, was running late ,’ Arthur Temple scurried up the field , to the ribald shouts of ‘ where’ve ya bin’.

As the seniors came into view on the breast of Lingmell – There were four hounds clear including course winner Huntsman’s Hope and Free Spirit, who enjoys the ambience of Wasdale. These two hounds gained a nice lead over Ladybird and Thorn Dancer, who , incidentally, was making her first visit. Over the last wall and it was number one of a unique treble , Free Spirit,  who had a few yards over ‘Hope’ and held on for victory.

Only seven pups and with only three ‘ in the race’ reduced to two on the finish, it was a competent win for Miterdale Rusty over Manna. That made two up and one to go for Steph and Tony , could they make it three . ‘ Easy Peazy’ – Miterdale Prim came away in the last to beat the ‘Kinniside pair of Bess and Nell.

There you have it , A treble for the Steele family from Miterdale in Eskdale, just thought  i’d mention it.!

We are not quite finished- in the last trail it was noticed that a certain hound ,who’s ‘identity will remain a secret, ran across the fell like a ‘ scalded cat’. It made up a vast amount of ground and for me, it is the fastest  I’ve seen run over  rough terrain except perhaps for ‘ Joss Naylor’.

Now for something completely different:

Two trailers, who , last weekend, after walking a trail decided to partake of liquid refreshment on the way home. As they ‘put it’ ‘a couple of shandies’- Then the waft of cooking aroused their hunger pangs and completely oblivious to the fact of ‘home cooking’ tucked into pizza and chips. Then they went home to a well deserved meal- I leave the rest to your imagination. One thing though, one of them was having Pizza and Chips——– AGAIN!

By the way – no names but for the tale we will call them Tony and Ian.

Also Ran  Levitate – Paloma Faith – Hunter’s Dale – Canny Girl – Mr Ant – Dawn – Ben 10 – Try Time -Cracking On.

Report. A pleasant afternoon  for the first of the seasons trails on the Fell Side at Fellside , just up the road from Hesket New Market or down the road from Uldale depending on which way you come !

The senior trail was nearly as short as the pups or was the pups nearly as long as the seniors. A view from outside saw Marli driving from a close up Galemire and Jazz Band. On the long downhill trod towards the uphill finish  Marli was always in front and as I stopped on the trail field along with many others we hadn’t a clue what had won and by how much? Somebody said ‘ Wendy’s Smiling ‘ . We knew then that Marli had held off  the challenge of Galemire Grace.

The pup trail saw only six face the starter and were out what seemed like ages and when they showed all six were in ‘with a shout’. To the shout of ‘ Hilda’ !Buble , a bitch, named after Michael Buble, notched up win number four , not bad for a hound which was badly injured and ‘wouldn’t run again’.

The last two trails were well bunched finishes- Layla came away in the closing stages and Meadow Dixie headed Razzle Dazzle on the line.

Report:  The senior trail and once more Bob ( Endure ) did ‘most of the work ‘ only to be denied on the the punishing finish by both Bracelet and Sambuca, the former winning by a head and in doing so goes to second in the senior championship.

The maiden trail was pretty similar to the seniors where the hound that drove all the way , Sugar Ray, dropped back on the finish, only to see Meadow Dixie and Foxparke Yabadabbadoo slow down in the final yards enabling Sugar Ray to regain the lead and win,  landing a substantial bet for the owner.

Liz had a comfortable win in the juniors and ‘ Wishy’ aka Brian Atkinson, had an overdue success , when Wanted just held on from a fast finishing Cool Enough in the puppy maidens.

Report. We’ve had all types of weather on Cold Fell this season, but in general we’ve been able to see, until last night when visibility was down to 30 yards and without the aid of Joe 90 the senior trailers were in the ‘lap of the Gods’.

The visibility didn’t improve until the pups slipped and they were 20 minutes late consequently the last trail finished in the impending gloom.

The hounds run the short trails well and only 20 seconds between the three of them. Buble made it three from three winning comfortably and kennel mate Razzle Dazzle made it a Dawson double with a short head victory in the last meanwhile in the maidens Aspire popped up for Geoff Rowand , who walked off the line with a ‘shake of the head’ . I don’t think it was expected but it has been getting nearer and it likes ‘mist and rain it transpires.

Report.  A quiet evening at Ward Hall, only 31 runners in the four trails, starting with the seniors where the even money joint favourite Arizona came from fourth to win readily from the other favourite Bracelet with the other three close up and the sixth not far adrift.

The pup trail – Silver Dusk and Telstar went clear on the long uphill finish, the ticketing hounds ran wide and lost ground headed by Accolade.

Black Mist made the journey from Tebay worthwhile when she held off the late challenge of Sunset Ridge ( 5 pts) and making a similar journey , Artisan, won the veterans from Silver Spangle and Tagget.

Two winners from the Westmorland area and three if you count the owners.

Report. Where do we start-  first the rule regarding Sweet Harmony.

The hounds are deemed to be under starters orders when all the runners have been marked. As the hounds had not been all marked Sweet Harmony was declared a non- runner.

As far as Boston is concerned it was not qualified to run and therefore was disqualified and receives a 28 day ban.

In the senior trail there was disquiet about hounds cutting, it is and always will be a problem but to condemn a hound over 2 mile away ‘ on the glasses’ on past performances is purely guesswork.

And take into consideration the senior trail was slower than the maidens although perhaps the first three maidens home are of a higher standard than maiden class. Having said that it doesn’t take any shine off the victory of Jenny’s Delight who came from behind to beat  kennelmate Huntsman’s Jewel. These two were well clear of the third , the rest of the field was well strung out, which gave the indication that something was amiss.

As previously noted the senior maidens comprising of the prolific driver Jazz Band and the two Westgates and in fourth Capetown, ‘Belle’ won 9 senior trails in 2013 and 8 in 2014 Capetown 19 puppy trails, The two Westgates together with Jazz Band finished well clear and justified their support in the ‘market’.

Only ten pups faced the starter , notable absentees being the first two in the championship, this didn’t take the shine of an easy victory for Eclipse over Just Mick with Buble a 100 yards back in third .And all participants received prize money.

The puppy maidens and a welcome win for the Mark family , that includes Mother who’s presence was the reason Summer Rose won ( according to her ) She ran on well helped by Sweet Harmony in front ( see above) with Kenmore in second and Jazz lyric, who again ran towards the catchers throwing away a winning chance, in third.

The last trail of an eventful afternoon provided the best finish of the day and consolation for George and Carol, after the disqualification of Mr Dec in the maidens, when Mr Ant held off the challenge of Razzle Dazzle and cracking On.

To sum up- The person who compared the day to a circus- I hear they are short of a clown- from now on I shall refer to you as ‘ Charlie Caroli’.

And thanks to John Crone for the ‘flak jacket’ after being harangued from Cleator via Flimby as far as Millom, anybody fancy the job?

And for those who think the owner of Boston should have a 28 day ban well! I will be changing its name to New York New York next season – that’s four goes at them all. So good they named it twice!!!!!
