Report;  The sun might be shining , Easter is upon us, but the night up Low Place can be summed up by one sentence, ” The hair that you clipped off the hound last night can you stick it back on”, Yes! it was rather cold.

Seventeen seniors faced the starter, who was in the correct position, contrary to Bower House report which erroneously stated that she was not in position, if you going to get it wrong do it in style!!!.

On the long downhill finish, the Rosthwaite hound , Stanley and Carol Jackson’s Bewitched came from third to take up a winning lead which was dramatically reduced in the final strides by the local Miterdale Copper and kennelmate Miterdale Rusty, Washington was fourth , laughingly accused of not been called in by none other than Jim Bob, who , I might add, once shouted a hound home until he was blue in the face only to find out it wasn’t it!

The kennel cough is still rife, hence some small fields, only seven pups and an easy victory for Miterdale  Shadow , in second and showing promise the Langdale hound Hawkswood.

The third race and for some “the dreaded restricted” If you have a maiden and you win a restricted you no longer have a maiden! Ask Russell Dawson Who stayed at home only to take a call saying Paloma Faith finished well clear, won easily, three maidens gone!

Wendy was supposed to run in the seniors but decided against it.

If you want an input Russell, thou best turn up!

And to cap it all in second place was a second year veteran and in third Yorkshire Lad, who was a non- winner until October and by the way Low Place is one of the longest journeys for yours truly so it’s a long way from Settle for Mick and his pick-up.

Report. As most of the day was spent scouting , then all I can report on is what happened outside .

The conjecture of opinion was that as the hounds had run two trails previously at Kirkbride and this trail at Oulton ran part of that trail and that included the Kirkbride finish, problems arose! Then as the seniors scaled when approaching this area , putting paid to Prudence ‘s chances, how come the open maidens on reaching the same place , never faltered neither the all- in but the pups made a mess of things and consequently the three that completed the course , led by Crazy, were well over the time limit of 25 minutes.

It is not unusual for the pups to struggle on the first occasion and should have no problem on Thursday but what was afoot with the seniors ? well one can only surmise, the comparable times with last season put them about two minutes adrift, like most things we will blame the weather, whether or not. And thanks to those who helped to pick up the odd stray and watched the traffic.

And on a trying afternoon a little titter as the Chairman was seen crawling through a hole in the hedge and Caroline ass over tit in the roadside ditch, it got a laugh out of ‘Studdy’.

And the ‘ Rocker’ Geoff Duke ( for the oldtimers) was Graham Reid , reliving his youth!

Report: Grand National day at Bower House and with a grandson called Arthur , ‘ Come on my (grand) Son’.

Clipped out Miterdale Copper cut out the early pace but on the finish it was Try Again who showed in front and held on for his first win of the season and his progeny Huntsman’s Major won handily from Monday’s winner Crazy in the juniors with the Irish hound in third.  Just an observation here the entries were all in the same handwriting bar one,

The first non- winners of the season and in the winners enclosure , and not before time, the Wilding’s ( Town Crier) with their late bred senior ( unraced as a junior ) beat her sibling Miterdale Steele. Wild Gypsy finished fast to overhaul ‘ Steel’ and win going away .

And in the fastest race of the day the veteran Kerrymore belied her age and beat Bewitched with Overwater Jack in third.

Report.  Once again Endure drove every inch only to be mugged on the line by a rejuvenated Prudence who is now on the quest of her third championship, after her’ gap year’

A disappointing field of four for the pups and once again ,after overcoming a tumble on the finish, Nikita prevailed over the favourite Huntsman’s Magician by a couple of lenghts with an unclipped Red Will handy in third.

The All-in and ——- what can you say apart from the frivolity of one who shall remain nameless catching the wrong hound, similar coloured , but hers had balls this one hadn’t.

Report>

In the seniors the second  favourite beat the favourite , Try Time getting the better of kennelmate Try Again minus Jonty and Evie but left in the capable hands of Jack and Jake, Try Again made most of the running but in the end was five metres adrift, another clipped hound Explore was third and in fourth unclipped Miterdale Copper.

If you wanted a tip in the pups ,well! Jonty turned up, and in went Crazy ,fulfilling winter  promise , she just held the former chairman’s and his son-in-law’s Cuchulainn, I’ve nicknamed it ‘cuckoo lane’ but it’s pronounced Kahulin ( Culann’s Hound), Crazy was a six to one shot and was three minutes faster than Saturday’s event.

The last trail or not the last trail- what happened? well! a pup came back as the hounds were lined up ,causing confusion, the starter wasn’t in position when some hounds ‘got off’ , then some more went, Now, the correct procedure would have been to disqualify those hounds , remark the rest – but as there were no hounds left to mark, the whole lot were disqualified and the trail made void.

Just a note here- this was a restricted trail consisting of mainly maidens, which as you are aware if they win they lose their status-if ,by chance the expected winner a restricted hound by definition is one of those hounds that beat the flag  then the trail in reality becomes a maiden trail with restricted rules, therefore if you are slipping a maiden , what are your options?

The trail meeting with TWO different finishes.

Report. A pleasant afternoon’s sport plus the sighting of a young adder basking in the sun.

In the seniors only eight runners but it was an intriguing battle between Endure and Prudence, the latter a former double champion but starting this season as a maiden , prevailed by half a length with Debra and the full coated ‘Denzil’ close behind.

The pup trail and victory for the Simpson’s of Kendal with Nikita over Provincial and favourite Huntsman’s Magician, close up fourth was Artemis.

The open Maidens and a convincing win for the odds on favourite Paloma Faith with Venus and Artisan second and third , all of which are kennelled in Kendal as was the pup winner

Report.

Well! the season got underway with a bang, literally, when Denis Peare’s car exploded when the pups were finishing, the front suspension air-bag went of (don’t ask me) and numerous people ducked for cover , ‘ what the hell was that ?’.

The camera was in use for the first trail and then again for the maidens and it was also used in the pups , not for a photo but to find the second!

The seniors and which ‘Try’ would it be-Try Again cut out the early work but on the finish it was Try Time with a ten metre lead which he almost threw away and after a long consultation with the camera He was given the verdict by a short head over the fast finishing Jenny’s Delight.

In the pups and Miterdale Shadow won by the proverbial mile and the second was also well clear of the third and they were all the same colour!.

Sugar Ray started the season with a short head win over Miterdale Proper with Miterdale Steele a close up third, that put a smile on Lisa’s face but I can’t say the same for the owner (Grumpy).

Tommy’s Legacy held off Bewitched in the all-in and the field owner came after we’d left and planted a crop of seed potatoes.

Report. On a spring day in October the 2016 season came to an end. Well!  the day started spring like but by the end it was autumnal , colder and hazy. And it was a day for favourites , all five , and one Champion, one runner -up and three HTA points winners.

In the seniors ,the video of the hounds crossing the last road has Meadow Josie in third place, the only one of the first six to finish ‘ out of order’ and the reason  the hound was bowled over by an exuberant collie in the penultimate field and consequently lost all chance.

Jazz Band won the maidens in a ‘hack canter’ and got a half – hearted cheer when he walked over the line, he could afford to walk as he was ‘a mile’ clear of second place Maybe. Just a mention for John (keep trying) Hoggy if it hadn’t been for the gate  ‘Skiddadle ‘ would have been second. maybe?.

The other three trails ran to form and in the words of ‘ a bookie’ -‘ Veterans , I’m tired of the name ;’ Artisan ‘ I’m not surprised that was her thirteenth veterans win.

That’s it for the trailing reports for this season but there will be a report on the annual general meetings of the seven areas and occasional notes on the close season activities.

Open Restricted 1 Artisan 2 Westgate Belle 3 Silver Spangle 4 Kaiser Sosa 5 Carrick  5 Ran Time 17.24.

Report. The 2016 season is coming to the close and it isn’t going out on a whimper but a bang – in more ways than one. I don’t if its the time of the year but that’s the second time in the last three years that I’ve pranged the car in the last week of the season.

The senior trail and the restricted trail had that end of season look only eight hounds partaking but  nevertheless two close finishes especially the last where Artisan had to ‘dig deep’ to fend off Westgate Belle.

In the pups Liz confirmed runner-up position in the junior championship and it was all change in the maidens as Meadow Josie unplaced on Thursday won from Wanted and Stand Up third , just doing yours truly out of his place bet.

Seaton nr Workington Thu Oct 27th.

Seniors 1 Bracelet 2 Endure 3 Issabella 4 Overwater Arnie.  4 Ran Time 28.39.

Pups 1 Liz 2 Silver Dusk 3 Silver Dawn 4 Sweet Harmony 5 Cool Enough 6 Stand By . 7 Ran Time 17.51.

Open Maidens 1 Foxparke Peggy Sue 2 Foxparke Yabadabbadoo 3 Bant’s Mist 4 Foxparke Hurry On 5 Captain Jack 6 Foxparke Babushka . 16 Ran Time 18.21.

Report.  Overwater Arnie had to win the last three championship trails to tie with Bracelet , it was a tall order and He fell at the first hurdle when Bracelet came from behind Endure to win and seal the 2016 senior championship, Arnie was a game fourth and only in the final stretches did he lose ground to the leading pair.

The puppy trail and it wasn’t the winner or the second that was the talking point , it was the unfortunate unplaced General James, as most of you are aware the ” General ” has been placed in all his trails since the season commenced, a feat unparalleled  in trailing history , and with only three meetings left , he, for some unknown reason, was ‘ tailed off’ at the first road crossing and couldn’t make up the lost ground.  To finish seventh of seven must be a bitter blow , but still it is a wonderful achievement and will be recorded in the history of trailing firsts ( nearly)

Onto the maidens and ‘ would you believe it’ it was won by one of the few non winners that are left, Foxparke Peggy Sue , who  led the ‘ purple army’ interspersed by Bant’s Mist and another one was sixth . ‘ Babushka’, whose trainer was heard to say ‘ I’ll beat Sugar Ray tonight ‘  reply was –

‘No chance’!

“If  it does then he’s for sale ”

– anybody want a pet !

. Also Ran Sugar Ray- Maybe – Silver Spangle – Jimmy Choo.

Report. Bracelet is ,in golfing terms, lying dormy, three up with three to play. At Millstone this afternoon she had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Tuesday’s maiden winner – Cracking gold- who led onto the finish but in the end got beat by a length with Arnie finishing strongly in third and six others in close contention.

In the pups General James and Silver Dusk were vying for the lead but out of sight ‘Dusk’ lost ground and the ‘General’ was left to win easily, liz  was second and the silver kennelmates were third and fourth.

In the final event three hounds had a nice lead at halfway and they finished that way – Cracking On winning comfortably from Artisan and Starlight.

Thanks go to Norma and Caroline for stepping in at the final moment with refreshments as Ronnie parted company with the ‘snack van’ at Buttermere.

I commented on Saturday as to what happened to the tea van and apparently the tea van was okay the car was okay but the bit joining the two together wasn’t.  Mars bars but no tow bar!

The anonymous person ( last Tuesday’s report) who said “look out Bracelet ” was damn near right.
