Missed the seniors ;

Pups finished in order of merit . “Major notching up another win , this time he had to pull out all the stops to keep “Irish Raider” Cuchulainn at bay, with kennelmate Jenny’s Breeze close up in third.

Overwater Jack finished second to Yorkshire Lad in the restricted trail but was awarded the race in the “stewards room” . His kennelmate was next ,’ Billy Whizz’ a one two for the Crowe family of Eskdale.

And in the last Westgate Belle finished well to beat Canny Girl with Artisan back in third.

Also Ran  Dawn –  – Gambler – Kaiser Sosa – Chavenel – Foxparke Mamma Mary – Foxparke Invisible – What Look –  Dairy Lightning.

Report. A contrasting change in the weather from cold to very warm and this had a telling affect on the hounds.

The senior trail was extremely hard going and pacing yourself was a must as early contenders Try Time and Langdale Ranger ran out of steam and Endure who at one stage seemed an unlikely winner ( see Lynchy) stayed on to win from Washington. Those that didn’t complete were all accounted  for.

Missed the pups but Miterdale Shadow is back on the winning trail.

In contrast to the seniors the maidens came well bunched and Beauty proved best of the Kinnisides (apparently named after “sqauky”) and in the last veteran Free Spirit completed a miterdale double when beating Hunter’s dale these two were clear of the rest.

Report: 17 Foxparkes and four short trails all within 13 seconds of each other and a maiden winning a restricted trail, again! That was Ward Hall last night plus a first success for Thorn Fire and the first dead heat of the season.

In the seniors there was late money for Thorn Fire who duly obliged holding on from Arizona and Tuesday’s winner Endure.

The pup trail and Black legend looked a certainty with a few yards to go but Red Will put in a late charge and both hounds went over the line as one.

Breeze won the restricted trail from the favourite Ben 10,she was a maiden before this and a philosophical owner ” Wishy” said “a wins a win and having beaten the favourite somebody quipped ” you are walking home Wishy”.

Artisan a genuine priced 6/4 on shot won the veterans from Quiet Linnet and Westgate Belle- We might just have seen the International veteran result.

Report. The first meeting at the popular Grasmere venue of 2017 and a convincing win for Jenny’s Delight in the seniors , the Carlisle based bitch won easily from Ladybird and in turn was well clear of the third hound Menorah.

The puppy trail and once again a convincing win for Huntsman’s Major. He finished well clear of kennelmate Jenny’s breeze with produce winner Overwater Gemini in third.

The maiden trail and ‘sneaking  ‘ down the finish was Sultan. I say sneaking because a number of spectators missed seeing it. ” should have gone to specsavers ” , Miterdale Proper held off Alfie for second place.

Report. Right ! I’ve been in detention , wrote 100 lines I will in future get all reports exactly  as everybody wants them and by the way if I get everything accurate and all the hounds right . I will not be writing about them instead I will be backing them. ’nuff Said’

Ward Hall , trails organised by the Cockermouth Area , officiated by the Aspatria and Wigton area  Its about time we woke up to the fact that the HTA is one area and not seven , what ! with only 4 bookmakers in action , hounds travelling all over , the same people attending  whether the trails are at Corney or Oulton, I ‘ll set the ball rolling but there are a lot of goalkeepers.!

Back to last night and Endure showed he is back to top form when he held Thorn Fire at bay up the long ,strength strapping finish, a length and a half was the winning margin, the improving Sambuca was third and Persian Bay a close fourth.

The puppy trail and after running consistently since Christmas- Red Will finally got his way – in an extremely close finish with Kinniside Meg, Mystery Bound ,and  Black Legend, Kinniside Mel – Impulse,it will be worth noting that five out of the six were maidens! The International is just around the corner!

Onto the final event and apparently the lure of a previous run around Bridekirk proved the undoing of some and it was up to a veteran to show them the way home, holding off the challenge of Sunset Ridge was veteran champion Artisan.

Now a tale of £2.50. Mike and Dot Wilding  have been staunch supporters of trailing for a number of years and after a bout in the wilderness they are now in their  twilight years and having a great deal of success with their new acquisition ‘ Wild Gypsy’. But at Kirkstone after she had finished fifth her owner ‘ lost the prize money’ Ok! it is only £2.50p but it is of sentimental value.

So this afternoon on passing the trailfield I decided to have a look, ‘needle in a haystack’ No! there it was lying on the finish.

Happy Ending? No ! Finders keepers losers weepers !

Report.  A fine night at Goosewell Farm Keswick , derived from a sign on the road that said ” Go Slow Geese”

Eight seniors and that included three red ‘uns and Jenny’s Aura was made favourite but she was well adrift of the lead at 20 minutes where Debra led from Tommy’s Legacy. Onto the testing uphill finish and Jenny’s Delight and Tommy’s came together , the latter getting the verdict  by half a length, with Bewitched in third.

The pup trail and a facile win for Huntsman’s Major , he poached an early lead and finished alone , chased home by his two kennelmates. The third trall, the maidens and a win for  Hunter’s Dale, who should know his way around Goosewell as we spent a good two hours looking for him last season.

Langdale Ranger now residing in the overwater kennel gave Song Bird a few yards lead but overhauled her in the field bottom, to register his second win of the season

Report: The second major trail meeting of the season and the first of the two produce events courtesy of the Keswick Area ,held at Latrigg Top Keswick, on a grey , damp afternoon.

The major event of the day was the 2017 Bitch Produce and this went to the Overwater kennel with Overwater Gemini ( Langdale Ranger- Dark Mist)  owned by the Irving family, Ike and Sheila Walker. J. Abbott and handled by Emily Irving. The white bitch won comfortably after taking advantage of a scale, which resulted in four of the fancied hounds returning to the start. Second place went to the favourite Crazy and third was Kinniside Mell.

The day will be remembered as ‘ Glenridding’ day as the Bland-Barrow kennel comprising of Jenny’s Delight, Huntsman’s Major, and Jenny’s Rose won three of the five trails, the latter was having only her sixth race of the season and ‘ Delight’ was winning for the first time this season after winning ten trails last season and Major was winning for the fourth time in a row and is a ‘real’ contender for the puppy championship.

”  Right Desert wrong tent or right tent wrong desert “:   credit where credit is due and Jenny’s Delight has been kennelled in Carlisle this season and trained by the Little family and not only that Jenny’s Rose has been for three years .- So ,with a swift apology an amendment ,we will keep the original script but it should read as probably started life in Glenridding but now reside in Carlisle and as the Joe Cocker song says ” With a little help from my friends”

In the senior trail three hounds established a clear lead , due to poor visibility, identification was difficult but after talking with numerous ‘good kenners’ we narrowed it down to anyone that was entered. The money was on Jenny’s Aura but in the words of Cilla ‘surprise surprise’  it was Ex- kennel mate Jenny’s Delight who came with an unassailable lead , ‘ Aura ‘ was second and the Overwater’s second string was third- Overwater Roger.

The maiden trail and it became plainly obvious that things weren’t going to plan when they hadn’t shown under Skiddaw  after 15 mins duration. A number of hounds returned to the start and the rest were spread out like ‘Mondays washing’ as they negotiated the slopes and the numerous runners / walkers/ ramblers/. In the end it was Red Smith’s Accolade that claimed first prize” just” eleven minutes slower than the seniors. The produce was next and was followed by the dog pups and the restricted trail which were both considerably faster ,three and four minutes respectively, perhaps the longer the trail is ‘ on the ground’ the better.

Thanks go to the Keswick Area Committee under the guidance of David ( Spike ) loan , trailers, gatekeepers ,raffle organiser etc and financially the meeting made a small profit.

Report. A pleasant evening , cold but dry and a laal bit windy.

Endure and General James  came with a substantial lead and the former got back on the winning trail with a comfortable victory.

Like father , like son as Miterdale Shadow flew down the Lamplugh hill to yet another victory, the consistent Black legend was second and title challenger Crazy back in third.

The tightest finish of the evening was saved until the  last as Night Vision looked to be an assured winner until- lifting himself of the ground- :Levitate , fairly “ate up the ground ” and he won by a length. the remainder of the field finished close up and hallway down the finish anyone of five could have won.

Report. It doesn’t rain but it pours, it wasn’t bad especially when you consider how high we are. Then it doesn’t help when the teavan failed to  appear ,it wasn’t the end of the world but at ten it felt like it .

Jenny’s Aura ‘pup champ’ scored an emphatic victory over her senior rivals beating Marli and ‘ Gracie’ and looks on course to be a contender for the senior title .Bewitched and kennel mate Bedazzled weren’t far behind in fourth and fifth.

In the pup trail, two hounds soon had a good lead over another two and these were well clear of the rest, who had their own race, the two became four and these four were led home by Huntsman’s Major a few lengths in front of Nikita.

The open maidens , I was wet ,cold and fed up not a night to Cherish, wants a clip ,see you on Saturday.

The Memorial trophy for Bill Thompson was won by Jenny’s Aura.

Report. Rain you wanted , rain you got , by the bucketful,. The hounds enjoyed it , the spectators didn’t!

Course specialist ( pup trail )  Liz once she got onto familiar ground made up the ground she lost at the start and notched up  her first senior success, second was Persian Bay and the time was on a par with last season ( sceptics please note).

Was it a hare or was it a fox, it was a hare with a bushy tail—– anyway it ran across the finish before the pup trail and caused a certain amount of confusion- the one who was expected to run off was the winner , Black Legend put in a circle with the race won and the rest were “uphill and down dale ”

Onto  the maidens and coming out of the wilderness was Fireman Sam- with Tony ( Tuts) Irving recovering from surgery , it was left to”Chutz” to chase after Sam who after ignoring his bait led him a merry dance (sort of ). Chasing Sam home was Wishe’s WANTED D/A and Breeze.

The last event was witnessed by just a hardy few and Ben 10 won by 10 yards from Belle and Mick.

Only 42 runners on this Sunday afternoon and in an intriguing senior trail  where Prudence is usually in front after eight minutes running this time  she was only third to Eclipse and Washington and that’s how it remained  for the remainder of the trail. Eclipse winning by 50 yds .

Only five pups and a comfortable win for Rio and in the open maidens , Frankel, formerly Jazz Lyric, the Milburn’s new acquisition held on to a 5 meter lead to fend of Accolade.

The veteran trail saw the second outing of the weekend for the evergreen Artisan, fourth on Saturday, she fairly romped home on Sunday winning on her own and the All- In went the way of Aprils’ senior winner Eden Rossi.

Report: Tommy’s Legacy got the better of the ‘General’ from the last road but outside the ‘general’ was in charge mainly due to ‘ Tommy’s’ making a mistake after ten minutes which virtually ‘put him out of contention.

In the pup trail Crazy established an early lead ,showed in front and was never in any danger finishing clear of Blue Solo ‘

The open maidens and once more a clear cut victory, this time it was Westgate Rose followed by non other than four Foxparkes.

Four of which make up an entry of Eighteen hounds for the forthcoming International from the Napier kennel.

Also Ran.Huntsman’s Hope – Jenny’s Rascal – Glory –  Black Eyed Pea – Midnight Show .

Report. Flaming June , somebody forgot Coniston , it was more like January with the lights on.

On that note it doesn’t seem likely that both Jenny’s Aura and Galemire Grace should find water most tempting , yet they did and that opened the door for Ladybird to take her first win of the season much to the “delight” of his owner.

The pup trail developed into a four hound event – victory going to Huntsman’s Major who just held the challenge of Cuchulainn with table leader Miterdale Shadow  a close third.

The non-winners , not on the field for this race, but outside six hounds broke away from the rest, I couldn’t name them , but they were all the same colour.

There is a saying in hound trailing that ”  if your hounds a maiden and it’s sound and fit then don’t run it in the restricted trail but when you’ve had only one run in three weeks you wouldn’t expect to win— ” famous last words” as they say ! . Kenmore stopped,  looked around and Jazz Band took his opportunity and although going around the back of the Judge was still the winner.” Can I look in the camera ” said his owner I think  He was only second”.

And in the fastest time of the evening Kerrymore won the veterans from Free Spirit and Westgate Belle.

Report: Buttermere ,one of the most picturesque trail fields, with excellent viewing , easy access , trailing at its best and on a windy night a double for the Glenridding kennel when last years puppy champ Jenny’s Aura started her senior campaign with a hard fought victory over long time leader Quiet Linnet and Huntsman’s Major took advantage of a mistake by a few of the leaders to complete the double in emphatic form finishing well clear of the fast finishing Kinniside Meg.

Metal Mickey aka Lone Rebel took the maidens, after leading for most of the way, in front of Wansfell (Boston) and these two were well clear of the rest.

In the final event and a first success of 2017 for Christine Brownlee when Marlou beat Dairy Lightning and Jenny’s Rose.

That was a four timer for the Keswick area an omen perhaps for Latrigg Top.

Report: Sorry no video.

Sods law five cracking finishes and no camera,

In the seniors Eclipse led them a merry dance for most of the trail until weakening in the final five minutes where Persian Bay took up the mantle and held of the persistent challenge of Thorn fire by a length with Liz back in third.

The senior maidens and anyone of nine hounds could have won. Step Up finishing on the favourable “high Side” finished well and just beat “Fandando” and Frankel * nee Jazz Lyric

. Crazy returned to winning form  notching win no five; she finished strongly, again on the favoured “topside” and beat Cuchulainn, who was finishing second again.

” We ,now come to the pup maidens and a springer in the market , Blue Solo , who’s headline  could have read “Solo ” on it’s own,   finishing with a flourish and coming from off the pace  she beat  Rodney Rascal and Escape and in doing so landed a “nice touch” for the “Cleator Boys”.

And in the final event, witnessed by a couple from Bridekirk who were enjoying their first taste of hound trailing apparently   the young lady’s grandfather was involved with “Limbo Dancer”, they saw Canny Mover have a serious challenger in Westgate Belle , whom she beat by a couple of lengths.

Baz’s blog follows and if you want to know what happens when Julie leaves the field stay tuned .
