Report: 99 hounds on a Monday evening, Cold Fell still popular amongst the trainers , supporters and bookies.

Once again championship leader Endure was hardly ever headed as the hounds made their way across the opposite fell, together with four others , they didn’t alter their positions and he held on to a couple of yards lead over Marli and the fast finishing Galemire Grace in third.

In the pups  Huntsman’s Major kept up his challenge in the puppy championship with yet another hard fought win. He didn’t have things his own way persistently challenged by Black Legend and the non- winner Cuchulainn, who’s turn must surely come, perhaps Kirkstone.

Talking about turns , Miterdale Steele running consistently for Ian Donaldson finally got his head in front at the expense of Manna, these two were nicely clear and had been for most of the trail.

The all- in and Course specialist Buble (bubble) brought tears to Wendy’s eyes when reversing form with Sweet Harmony.

Report. Potter’s Park the venue of the festival of trailing, not everybody’s  cup of tea. but , still, an excellent days trailing , especially if you won, Were the bookies smiling ? as they departed.

The proof of a decent trail is sometimes proven by the times taken and yesterday the five short trails were :

Res 18.22 Pup 18.24 V 18.25 NW 18.41 PM 18 48. That is 26 seconds between all five. Therefore it is feasible that ‘Billy Elliot’ could have won any of the four trails!!! That’s Elliot not Balls!

The meeting got underway with the pup maidens and Dancing all over his opponents was Foxparke Billy Elliot finishing like a train for trainer Stuart Smith and joint owners Stuart and the Napiers, and not forgetting Nicola Wilson, the second favourite beat the favourite Jenny’s Rose and Thorn Diamond which was the first leg of a day to remember for the Burrows, Reay and Satterthwaite family.

The non –winners and Susan and Sarah’s Westgate Autumn justified favouritism, one or two gambles went astray including Moi – Four of the ticketing hounds were  from the late bred litter of Kyza – Gypsy. This trail was the closest finish of the day with any one of the first four in with a chance.

The veterans and reigning veteran champion Artisan trained by Reg ( another) Smith showed there was life in those  legs when she held off the challenge of Free Spirit and course winner Quiet Linnet.

That was the second favourite to oblige ,would any thing come to the rescue of the layers, step forward ‘ Denzil’ in the shape of Washington. The well supported General James looked to have one leg over the line when taking the lead at the final viewpoint. Although showing in front he hadn’t the legs to hold off John and Heidi’s border bred Washington with Jenny’s Delight in third.

The senior maidens and as always one of the most competitive trails and as the hounds made their way to the finish there were plenty in with a shout. As they approached the finishing line I heard about a dozen different names called out ” So and So wins it ” Finally Hunter’s Dale was mentioned ( Batty, only because he was on )..Hunter’s beat Yorkshire Lad from Yorkshire and Summer Rose in third. Hunter’s was the first leg of a double for the above mentioned team and was well supported in the market .

The pups and somebody remarked only ten runners , well there are only thirteen pups that have won championship trails so therefore in reality 10/13 is a good percentage.

Hawkswood  swooped to conquer, the Little Langdale bitch owned and trained by Dennis Peare and Jackie Gill  ( Working )   Put in a sharp burst to take the honours from Rio and Black Legend   ( Now Who is going to take the photo ?

The last trail and once again the shouts were coming from ‘ Buzz and Jo’ and Molly makes three. Debra showed with a yard or two  and was in no danger as she streaked away from Bewitched, the second leg of that double ensuring the kennel trophy went to Abbeytown.

The Benny Kinsella trophy was awarded to Washington, the trophies were presented by Peter Fowler and Geoff Messenger and the Cockermouth and Workington Supporters club.

Report. On a warm night it was good to see our Irish friends once more and also a visit from former chair of the Aspatria and Wigton area Steven Fincher- both witnessed a comprehensive display of driving by the table leader Endure who won easily from a rejuvenated Prudence with Cool Enough in third. That was the first favourite uttered the lone bookie as he counted his loose change.

The puppy table leader was favourite in the next but previous winner Red Will had to much up his sleeve and won easily from Black Legend.

And onto the final race and as the previous two another easy winner – this time it was Wanted ( dead or alive) a nice reward for the punters who’s wish came true.

Report.  It was a muggy night at Ward hall, the visibility was poor, there was light rain and although at the time we were unaware that it was going to be a long night.

The seniors and once again Thorn Fire showed a fine turn of finishing speed to beat a surprising second in the shape of Wild Gypsy who was competing in her first senior trail- a progeny of the Westgate’s , not two year old until August and the downfall of a few bob on the third- Arizona.

The pup trail, what happened? we might find out , we might not , but all of them returned to the start and in my experience it looked like they had circled hit the trail the wrong way and ‘come back’ as they were racing and were practically in correct order.

The restricted hounds together with some pups got round but again, although within the time limit they were five minutes slower than average and the last hound was rounded up at 10pm. Not taking any shine off the win of Sunset Ridge, who came well clear of Free Spirit and JLS.

Report. A rarity on a Monday evening and the first midweek event to attract four bookies. Three trails to bet on and with two ‘ jollies’ winning perhaps a punter’s night.

Endure kept up his lone pursuit of the senior championship with a ‘bloodless’ victor. winning by a wide margin from Lone Rebel and Queen in third.

Huntsman’s Major after defeat in the dog produce was soon back in the winning trend beating kennelmate Jenny’s Breeze and wearing his favourite blue jeans was Joe Simpson catching the maiden winner Venus beating Spring rose and ticketing for the only the second time this season Sparrowmire Lily in third.

The all- in and this was a cake-walk for the consistent Little Messy, run three, won all three, all at Helton. The rest ran their own trail and were led home in Summer by ‘ Autumn’

Report: The Premier trail for dogs was held at Dubs Lane Windermere on Saturday 1st July- The Dog Produce , and on a fine afternoon we saw the table leader and second favourite Miterdale Shadow, relishing the downhill finish , beat Cuchulainn owned by first timers Ian and Mel Dooley. The winner owned and trained by the Steele family from low Place farm in Eskdale, a place synonymous with winners, and in the words of Steph ” it was for my mum”

The day got off to a good start for the connections of Tommy’s legacy and compatriot My Way, they arrived in convoy, parked together and no doubt will party together. Tommy named after Tommy Crossland from Ambleside , Shirley’s dad and trained by her and intended Brian Graham stormed down the steep incline to beat Ladybird owned and trained by “Grumps Batty” with “The Queen ” in third. And My Way ,after a long spell in the doldrums, had a session with the”physio” sorted out his problem and won the maidens in fine style for Duncan and Amy , Miterdale Proper was second again and The Foxparkes were third.

The open pups went to Glenridding in the shape of Huntsman’s mist and in the most competitive race of the day , the Holmes family had a welcome success with Sweet Harmony. Both these trails were close finishes and the catchers were kept on their toes.

Report. 100 runners at Redmain ( must be the new mixture).

Could Endure strengthen his hold on the senior championship, the answer No ! he tried hard to hold on to a slender lead but in the end succumb to the faster finishing Thorn Fire, “Denzil” was a close third.

The pup trail and “Stanley” led for most of the trail but Miterdale Shadow ‘came away’ on the long meadow to register another win, Rio was third and Fiona’s favourite was fourth ” Golden Balls”

The open maidens and “watch your dogs” was the command as about a dozen appeared on the finish with a winning chance. In the end it was Wild Gypsy (sister won  Monday) who had a length to spare over Stand By and the all-in was a Breeze.

Just a reminder entrance to Thursday’s redmain trails is via the concrete road from Tallentire. The road that comes into Bridekirk trailfield from the north – instead of turning right to Bridekirk, turn left-and follow the yellow brick road.

Report: Just a thought on the question ” Is the mixture to blame for the alleged ” bad trails” ?

Lamplugh on Saturday only four finished on to Kirkland on Wednesday- same rags, same mixture, same ground only difference- the weather. The winner Overwater Roger fourth Langdale Ranger . which were two of the hounds that didn’t get round on Saturday.

Back to Kirkland and after 10 minutes four hounds were clear of the other three , the phones were busy- they climbed the fell ,stopped for a drink, the three at the rear caught the four in front, the phones were busy. ” Cancel the first call, it’s Crewe station- All Change “.

In the end , Overwater Roger scored his first senior victory over 100 metres in front of  Kinniside Joe.

The pup trail was a facile win for table leader Miterdale Shadow and in contrast the last trail was a bunched finish which went to Skelton hound Stand By  from Summer Rose.

Report: Missed the seniors, gallivanting around Dean trying to catch a lost hound.

The juniors were pretty well  in a heap : Until Black Legend stole a slight advantage and increased his lead to that of the trail field. Finishing in isolation , Red Will won the race for second and the race for Foxparkes was won by Billy Elliot in front of Becks. Wanted got up on the line to beat Keystone in the maidens and Saucy Nancy was the first Foxparke home.

Report. On a warm , shirt sleeve night in the stunning Newlands Valley– Two Questions – Why was the seniors 2+mins slower than the maidens and why did the first two pups veer of in the penultimate field. Some would say the answer to the first question : The maidens ran faster , tongue in cheek, but is it right? The second question , and a guess,  what about the catchers voices echoing?

In the seniors and if you are a “time watcher” then Lone Rebel has already finished, Jenny’s Delight won clearly from Eden Rossi , a good second ,a fields and dykes runner,. Not Now! and in third ever present Washington.

Next , one of the few midweek maiden  trails, on a dead rag and as reported; faster than the seniors , and a superior performance from ” metal Mickey” aka Lone Rebel , he finished alone  with Miterdale Proper in second.

The pups, and after Jim Bob had correctly identified the first three, and “Major” has no chance was told they are not the leaders but third , fourth ,fifth, the favourite and kennelmate are well clear. Is there a specsavers in Millom?.

Then to “cap it all” the first two swung to their left and disappeared from view but as the bookies were counting their money , they returned and still had enough lead to win easily.

And in the last the well supported Menorah , Christine and Victor Brownlee’s charge won in a close race with veterans Free Spirit and Huntsman’s Hope in second and third.
