Report: If you followed the signs to Cockermouth Show you missed the trails if you happened to find Bridekirk then you missed the show. Well you missed the agricultural bit but not some exciting  finishes that had the spectators on their toes.

24 runners in the first two trails and a practical walk over for Champion elect , Endure who won by a wide margin from Arizona and Dairy Lightning not so in the maidens where Fireman Sam led over the final obstacle , only to find the long run in rather daunting and gave way to first,  Kinniside Beauty who then succumb to the faster finisher in Meadow Josie.

The pup trail and a rare defeat for Huntsman’s Major when he couldn’t contend with the sharper finishing speed of Crazy having her first win since early June making 10 in total. Rio was third after holding every chance.

The pup maidens and three hounds stole a march before the Redmain road and consequently finished alone with a fourth a long way back and the rest were picked up as waifs and strays. Of those who made it Sergeant James for the third trail in a row came in front only to be passed in the closing stages , this time it was Escape making it a Moore Family double.

The final trail of the afternoon went to Artisan who won comfortably from Quiet Linnet with Keystone in third.

Report. After a wet morning the weather changed and the sun shone ( a bit ) on Ambleside and five well organised trails ensued.

Apart from the puppy trail, which in its own way was exciting, there were close finishes .

We will start with the pups and if they had come straight what would the result have been, well it doesn’t matter because they did what they did, it’s history now ,it isn’t the first time that the pups have cocked up the finish ,nor will it be the last. The trail gets paddled about but as they are on the “whistles” they are expected to run straight as did the hounds in the following two trails.

Although it was a bit of a mess it takes nothing away from the winner Overwater Stanley, was he in front? It was a case of I am the Pied Piper “follow me” and follow the leader they did and to me it looked like the hound that took them wrong was indeed first over the line. All I can say with certainty is that Cuchulainn was second and his trainer used to be the  trail manager at Ambleside and took it philosophically with ” that’s trailing , that’s Ambleside ! as “beau”went back  up the hill .

The day got off to a good start for Alan , Jim and Ann Little’s   kennel , incorporating Denise and Jenny Bland, when the first leg of a double, Jenny’s Delight took the senior trail and with it the Jerry Meneaud memorial trophy and £160 when she held off the Borrowdale challenge of Bedazzled by a length,…

The senior maidens and a dual of the “Alfies”. David Crowe shouting Alfie for Come Home Alfie and Mick Moorehead shouting Alfie for Yorkshire Lad. It was a veteran versus a two year old and the old “un  proved the stronger holding the challenge of the young “whippersnapper” with Foxparke( Flintstone ) Yabadabadoo in third.

The pup maidens and won in style by John and Val Loan’s Steel End who collared the leader and won by a couple of lengths with Sandyman in third.

The final race of an excellent days sport was the restricted trail and the second leg of the double for Alan Little , when Jenny’ Rose held off the persistent challenge of Sweet harmony with Menorah back in third.

Report. Some of the surrounding district was hit by thunderstorms , Cold Fell was missed and not only that it was quite warm, makes a change !

Just ten for the seniors and odds on favourite Marli looked nailed on but she didn’t account for half the course specialist Buble who after a tussle to the line , won by a length with Persian Bay back in third .

Huntsman’s Major kept up his challenge for the puppy title with a facile win and the question is will he run to-morrow ?

Lily from Kendal valley stepped up her performance of last week beating C/D winner Layla and Night Vision. And in the restricted in the gloomy dusk the leaders were in great danger of bowling over the promoter ” Ructions” who decided the tape wanted straightening completely oblivious to the leading hounds. They were  Mr Ant and Songbird..  The feature of the evening was a Kendal double Buble and Sparrowmire Lily, the first “ticket” for Uldale Tramp, and the question “where’s the camera Bill”?, Answer “hung around my neck “.

Report . Back on the winning trail that’s Arizona who finished strongly to hold off the challenge of Quiet Otter and Liz . Prudence failed to finish the course and Kaiser got a ticket in the maidens.

The maidens, who felt the heat and finished tired, the winner and favourite was Wanted .

The pup trail and only seven runners and once more the final hurdle had a say in matters when it appeared that the four hounds that came together all fluffed it. Red Will came out best and duly won by a diminishing distance from Rio.

Mystery Bound for Glenis and Raymond finally, after  promising pre-season trials , got her head in front of another who showed early promise- Provincial.with Homeward Pride best of the Foxparkes in third .

Report. Potter’s Park with its commanding views of Ennerdale, host of the festival of hound trailing but last night just the  run of the mill Monday evenings fare with just 43 runners, nevertheless there were two close finishes to wet the crowds appetite along with Liz’s sandwiches and home made cakes.

Jenny’s Aura turned around the form after finishing last on Saturday she won unchallenged from Saturday’s winner Washington and a close finish for third between Cool Enough and Kinniside Joe.

The puppy trail and Jenny’s Breeze beaten in the last stride on Saturday lost her maiden tag when collaring the favourite Black legend on the line and the maiden trail went to the foxparkes wiith a one /two with Yabadabbadoo and Hooligan ( Lunatic) in a bunched finish.

Report:  It is not often the video is switched off after only filming two hounds then switched on to film the rest. That’s how far the first two seniors were in front , Endure and Marli , by a country mile, the rest nowhere!

The senior maidens and lone Rebel “threw away” an early lead, apparently hindered by bracken, but still came with the lead on the long uphill finish but was run out in the latter stages by Step Up with ” Alfie” in third. Alfie, !Alfie !,Alfie! could be clearly heard from the last road,.

The pups and Huntsman’s Major making his second appearance of the weekend made no mistakes and won comfortably from Red Will and Nikita.

In contrast to the first trail all nine pup maidens were on the finish together and what price a light -coloured winner, they were 1-2-3 Steel End making up for the defeat of “Rebel” in a close race with Provincial and Cuchulainn

The restricted trail and as predicted ( see blog ) Little Messy made it three out of four at Helton,

Also Ran Jenny’s Rose – Miterdale Copper – Miterdale Rusty – Jenny’s Aura – Overwater Bessie -Overwater Hally – Overwater Jack – Billy Whizz – Silver Dusk – Dawn.

Report. A damp start, a fine finish, that’s the weather not the trails.

To avoid the pups striking the senior trail, the shorter trails were first to run, the only downfall to this is that most of the crowd had gone home rather than wait over an hour for one trail.

That didn’t spoil what was an excellent day’s sport.

The pups and the top two pups took each other on again and this time” Shadow “showed just in front and held on tenaciously to a slender lead over arch rival ” Major” contrary to the amateur on the video. Kinniside Molly was third , the first of four tickets for the ” keep the bar open ” team.

The pup maidens and once more a close one with Kinniside Meg touching off Jenny’s Breeze on the line,” drinks all round ” was the cry ! And a special mention for ” Juicy Fruity ” The “Black’Un !  was that her first ticket ?

The maiden trail and the camera was used to split Tempress and KInniside Beauty with Sultan in third.

I don’t think that Quiet Linnet is photogenic , once again she came with a commanding lead in the veterans but the first two in the seniors had to rely on the camera and it couldn’t split Washington and Tommy’s Legacy. I didn’t see the finish we were trying to round up a couple of hounds returning on the trail ( they weren’t supposed to do that, that’s why the seniors were last.) C’est la vie !

Report.  Thorn Fire made it six for the season and moved into second in the senior championship with a hard fought victory over the fancied Liz, she won by a dog length with course winner Quiet Otter close up in third.

In the pups four had established a lead and the outsider of them Foxparke Golden Balls took advantage of a mistake by Rio at the final obstacle, to win his second trail , by half a length from the favourite who recovered well and gave himself every chance in the last 50 yards.

The restricted trail and JLS came from behind to land the spoils at the expense of Fireman Sam and Quiet Linnet

Report . On an evening that could have been a complete washout the Promoter was highly delighted that although it showered to start with by and all it was a fine but muggy night.

Now I could report what was leading at halfway but on reflection ,after being told that Endure had won and Galemire Grace was second,  knowing them in running was a bit of  guesswork! As it was Washington held on from the resolute Bedazzled with Persian Bay in third.

Now the clash of the puppy table leaders , Huntsman’s Major and Miterdale Shadow and after a large scale at approximately half way . And according to some the leader has a good lead, but yet unknown. Out of the gloom came “The Major” at least 50 yards in front of Black Legend and Cuchualinn.

The final race was run in a fine mist and visibility was down to a hundred yards., and appearing out of the impending  gloom was old -timer Artisan just in front of Yorkshire Lad and Kinniside Beauty .

That win takes Artisan  out of the maiden class ,

Report. The first trail meeting at Shap for the 2017 season and a fine day greeted the supporters and five exciting finishes were witnessed.

The seniors and did the sheep put paid to Eden Rossi’s chance ?

Washington had led down the undulating finish but with fifty or so yards to go- sheep ran across the finish and badly interfered with the challenging “Rossi” but then “Denzil” stopped and waited , then ran on and held on for the win.

The maidens and all twenty appeared on the finish together, like an animated conga they came and Hunter’s Dale got the verdict on the evidence of the camera- a nose in front of Step Up with Levitate a close third.

It is tit for tat in the race for the puppy championship and not to be outdone by “Shadow” Major countered beating kennelmate Jenny’s Breeze to keep in the title race.

The non -winners and you couldn’t have a more popular winner than Ian and Mel’s Cuchulainn, He has been one of the most consistent pups this season  without winning and the lure of  special prize money and a trophy saw him competing in a lower grade and justifying favouritism he held on to beat Huntsman’s magjcian who just failed to pull victory out of the hat.

In the restricted ,and after , Russel had been admonished for shouting for the wrong hound, it was left to Sweet Harmony to get the better of Mr Ant and Persian prince ,in another close race.

Report: a condensed report from an unbiased onlooker.

A pea – souper of a day at Low Place where the majority of the afternoons sport was shrouded in mist and that had a reflection on the outcome of the trails.

The seniors struggled and came in at long intervals , the winner Miterdale Copper took 31minutes its kennelmate in second an estimated 15 minutes behind. Similarly the pup trail winner  Miterdale Shadow finished a country mile in front of the second,

Miterdale Steel made it a treble in the maidens and a four timer was on the cards in the fourth trail when another Miterdale finished first but it transpired it wasn’t the old boy miterdale one but Miterdale Proper which had run in the previous trail .  Ah! well you can’t win them all ! Billy Whiz beat his two rivals to make it a nap hand for Eskdale and in the last the veterans which provided the largest field of the day at both meetings, the winner, course specialist Black Eyed Pea  , putting a smile on Nicola’s face. Coincidently the pups and maidens were identical times unless it was to misty to see the watch !!!!

Report . In contrast to Low place it was a fine afternoon at Dean, wet to start with but a clear end.

Quiet Otter under the watchful eyes of Gordon, Casper, Neil , and Chutzy lead for most of the trail with “lIghning ” close behind and that’s how they finished with a ever present kennelmate , Sambuca in third.  I think I’ve got this right Chutzy and Casper shout for it , and then both attempt to catch it, Neil watches as he catches the third and Gordon rubs it down and collects the winnings,, or something like that !

The maidens and Keystone held on to beat the favourite Wanted, who was considered unlucky as they would say in racing” made a bad mistake at the last” Westgate Luther running in his first ever senior trail finished a creditable third.

The pup trail and a close finish between he first three , Rio held the lead and was challenged by Red Will in the final strides but held on to win by a short head with the consistent “Legend ” just behind in third.

In the puppy maidens , once again the finishing speed of Billy was decisive as He put yards between himself and Bronco and won easily and progresses into the higher ranks , where he might find it is still his cup of tea.

Report’ Ward Hall with its commanding views over the Solway and the Cumbrian and Scottish coastline is a popular venue , when it fine! and it was when we got there but by mid trail time it was rather inclement , to be honest it p******* down.

It was fine and muggy for the seniors and Endure the 4/1 on jolly gave his backers a scare ( there wasn’t any!! ) when it looked curtains for him when Sambuca came to his side with five meters to go but he had a quick glance , saw the danger ,and quickened in the style of a Champ, Cool Enough and Washington had a race for third and likewise Liz and Silver Dusk for 8/4d

The pup trail and it sounded like half of Eskdale were shouting Buster, Buster. well ! it worked and Miterdale Shadow scored again to keep his lead in the puppy table.

Now it started to rain , the bookies changed the cars around, waterproofs were donned by those who stayed in the car and those outside ,just got wet ! And in the maidens a one/two for the Westgate litter as Foxparke Saucy Nancy bt Westgate Luther or should it be Luther stopped and Nancy had no choice!.

Seven hardy souls were sent on their way in the veterans , keen as mustard , “they are daft” said one  and” we are  bloody dafter” ! said another. Result 6 pts to Artisan.

Report. A fine night offering views that cannot be surpassed in the trailing world.

In the seniors a battle to the line ensued between last years puppy champion Jenny’s Aura and course specialist Marli and the former got the better of her elder  coming from behind she ended up winning by a couple of lengths . Galemire Grace came from sixth place to get third and a surprise package in fourth was the Settle hound Yorkshire Lad, his first senior ticket.

Huntsman’s Major is in complete charge at the moment and here he outclassed his rivals and won with plenty in hand, Nikita was second and Hawkswood third.

Bedazzle dazzle them in the last , a win for Carol and Stanley and Spike ( not a penny on ) Dawn was second after holding every chance with Sweet Harmony was third.

Ward Hall is fast becoming Thorn Fire’s favourite venue . This was win number Three and though she wasn’t as impressive as in the past , Tuesday’s trail was run in warmer conditions and the time was respectable. Sambuca was second and kennel mate Quiet Otter was third .

Coming from second place, the reigning puppy table leader Miterdale ( Buster ) Shadow; got up to beat Red Will and kept his lead in the race to become champion.

Finally we are starting to get used to “Wishy” shouting first and getting Breeze over the line in front of .Westgate Luther was no exception. With a following wind she justified favouritism , completing a treble for the punters.
