REPORT: We have to have trails everyday or do we? 89 runners midweek. no meets on Monday none on Wednesday. !!!!

The seniors and another win for last year’s junior champ Jenny’s Aura puts her in second place with 9 wins and with Endure out of action his 17 wins looks vulnerable.

Tonight Jenny’s came with a good lead which might have been fortunate, she was in front and then dropped back whilst the two up front Miterdale Steele and Thorn Dancer either of which got a ticket. Finishing second was Galemire Grace, who is yet to register a win this season, and in third Marlou.

The pups and the eagerly awaited clash of the top two was somewhat disappointing as Huntsman’s Major struck the senior trail in the opposite direction and ran the starting end of the seniors ( Who said the aniseed was no good?) meanwhile Miterdale Shadow couldn’t take advantage ,after the leaders had made several mistakes coming down the fell onto the finish, he came on to the finish with ground to make up and although finishing like a train could only  manage third behind  Overwater Stanley ,who passed ” Golden Balls” to win by a couple of lengths.

The maidens and a close finish with the hounds under the judges feet and in the middle of the line finally it was sorted out in favour of Casanova just in front of Manna ,a head to Westgate Autumn and Howgill Annabella with Thorn Diamond behind the judge.

The old timers in the veterans and the fastest time of the night, perhaps a little knowledge isn’t dangerous but advantageous. Artisan , trained by the old man of Kendal Reg Smith won easily from early leader Capetown and the favourite and well- supported Westgate Belle.

Report. For Loweswater Show read Dearham, a substitute yes, but has a traditional show meeting been lost or not? Loweswater or Lorton is not everybody’s cup of tea but it is steeped in trailing’s history and I for one will miss it.

Back to reality and once more the gutter in the last field had a say in who won . Sambuca led into it in the seniors and Denzil led out, hesitated, but challenged firstly by Silver Dusk and then by Sambuca, he held on for victory, which to Heide’s delight was filmed albeit a shade bright.

The pup trail and with 24 second places between them ,who was going to win ? Rio by a length , a philosophical owner and trainer shrugged  his shoulders- another second whilst his part owner is sunning himself abroad probably enthusing the locals about nowt! The unlucky pup was Mystery Bound who “missed ” two jumps and still managed third place.

Thorn Diamond won the pup maidens from Escape and “Billy “Bronco and the last race was commandeered by the ” yellow  bus” red bus gang in the shape of Foxparke’s who narrowly beat Sugar Ray and as owner of one of the umpteen in the kennel and also the  owner of the second ,held an enquiry into the outcome and blamed it on the person who started shouting them home soon after leaving Tallentire , Peaked to early and couldn’t match ” Peggy Sue” in the final stages.  The quicker she gets married the better! That’s the hound not the owner!

Report. A warm afternoon , nice and peaceful , until all hell was let loose as the chairman’s  Grand kids plus another three took command and just about drove me Pat and Caroline around the bend.

But we did see five trails and three of them within eight seconds in length.

In the seniors the favourite Songbird showed with a good lead but on the long uphill finish she tired but had enough petrol in the engine to last home from Miterdale Copper.

The pups and the return of Championship leader Miterdale Shadow and although he had every chance he could only finish fourth to Steel End and brother Cuchulainn and Huntsman’s mist in third,

The non- winners and only five runners-  Kinniside Bess and Huntsman’s Magician were well clear ,finishing in that order.

The restricted trail and a close run thing between to Westmorland hounds , Queen and Grange Music, who finished behind the judge and that might have cost her the race, with Night Vision in third. The final trail , the veterans, and Huntsman’s Hope came with a similar lead as Songbird , but this time the petrol ran dry and Course winner Free Spirit notched up another victory, showing a new lease of life as an “old timer “

Report. Fellside as the name suggests is on a fellside and the finish in view for most of the way and then from the bookies ring -they disappear and all you see are the hound owners darting forward so in the last race BIll beat Russel and a bloke in a blue and white coat was third.- that is Cracking gold- Razzle Dazzle – Frankel.

In the seniors Jenny’s Aura  and Persian bay were well clear a case of last years pup champ beating the previous years champ and in the pups” Major ” again won easily.

Report. A fine day for the traditional Ennerdale Show held on the Leaps at Kirkland . Four trails and double figures for all of them. In the seniors and the early work was cut out by Free Spirit and Miterdale Copper but on the long downhill finish who’s motto is thou shalt not overtake, Thorn Dancer scored her first success of the season in the seniors , Black Legend put a string of seconds behind him when he commandeered the pathway as did Westgate Autumn ,a decisive winner and course speciality Song Bird ,was well clear in the last . A mention of the lesser lights , the six Kinnisides- Joe , Molly Meg Bess Beauty, Mel. Tickets — Five  out of five  Ennerdale ; four out of six – Cold Fell .Six out of Six at lowick . Six out of Six at Cockley Beck , four out of four – Gamblesby.

And on a drink note it was Magners not Magnet but it had the same effect.,

Report. Once more a shortage of runners and it used to be said ” the bigger the field , the bigger the certainty ” not in trailing as once again the three favourites obliged. Report. 30 runners- 27 and 26 three trail meetings over the weekend, needs to be sorted.

The seniors at Shap developed into a two hound race with Washington leading on the downhill finish only to be passed in the closing stages by the joint favourite Jenny’s Aura.

And only three pups , the novelty betting this time was well wide of the mark as Major won by 20 yards that’s a long way from the last wall indicated .

Sparrowmire Angel in the open maidens had the race by the scruff of the neck only to stop inches from the tape, then turn to meet her nemesis in Yogi Bear and Westgate Autumn , in the end she settled for third and the restricted trail was won in convincing manner by Persian Prince.

Pup Maidens 1 Sergeant James 2 Escape 3 Say It As It Is, 6 Ran Three Finished  Time 19.57. Also Ran – Bronco – Provincial – Thorn Diamond.

The six runners kept each other company for most of the trail, the lead  changing constantly and on the long finish all but Prudence was in with a shout, Silver Dusk led then Sambuca took the lead and the ” General” took up a challenging position and the “Otter” was in contention. Finally it was the favourite Sambuca that kept her length lead from General James.

Frankel , formerly Jazz Lyric, got his head in front in the senior maidens in a time compatible with the seniors.

In the pups could Miterdale keep up his winning sequence well No!

Mystery Bound recent maiden winner showed a glimpse of her winter promise and finished well to hold off Rio with ” Shadow “A close third

The puppy maidens and half the field completed the other half didn’t and this suited Sergeant James who had been having a bout of seconditis, holding off the persistent challenge  of Escape.

Billy Birkett opened his car door and announced that he had one winner and two seconds on board , no wonder the yellow gold car sank in the Bridekirk mud.

Open Restricted 1 Queen 2 Overwater Jack 3 Razzle dazzle 4 Eden Rossi 5 Capetown 6 Starlight. 10 Ran Time 20 49     Also Ran Billy Whizz- Come home Alfie – Glory.

Report. Although I say it myself as the promoter” they were good trails considering they were run on the regulation mixture and the two Whitehaven hounds who made the long journey , a second and a fifth ( re Mr Riley). And a bonus for Ken Routledge ,with kind regards to Tony, half the field sprayed all over his car. By the way Jenny’s Aura beat Gracie by a couple of yards as they both had to pass Bewitched who flew downhill as if on a broom.

Novelty betting in the pups as they were only four- Colin bet that ” Major “had to win by two clear walls, he didn’t , but it was close.

The last trail finished in semi-light and looking forward to pushing cars off the field, didn’t pay much attention , but heard Russ shouting and Queen duly obliged. By the way if you go to the next ploughing competition you will see Joe Simpson competing , last night was practice time.

Report . Sandale, perched above  Uldale Common with the Solway Firth to the north, once more back in the hound trailing calender.

And what was in store ? three close finishes, two close to the clock. the maidens only 4 secs to spare.

In the seniors Menorah notched her second win in a row when she kept Persian at bay with a head win, Silver Dusk was third, the hounds were closely bunched for the first half but the last hill took its toll in this race as well as the other two , of which Red Will asserted on the flat run in to get the Better of black Legend, some hounds had a throw at around 5 minutes running which  virtually put paid to their chances.

In the last the clock nearly put paid to hounds as it was they had plenty of time ! If tempress had started her winning run any earlier then its no  doubt it would have been a short ‘un as it was she got up on the line in a photo between the first four, half a length ‘short head, and a length separating them.

Cockley Beck ( nr middle of nowhere) Mon 21st Aug.

Seniors 1 Jenny’s Rose 2 Miterdale Copper 3 Ladybird 4 Overwater Jack 5 Kinniside Joe 6 Jenny’s Delight .7 Ran Time 37.02 Also Ran Night Vision.

Pups 1 Miterdale Shadow 2 Sandyman 3 Kinniside  Molly       4 Paddywack 5 Kinniside Mel   6 Kinniside Meg  7 Ran Time 19.26

Open  Maidens      1 Casanova 2 Miterdale Prim 3 Yogi Bear 4 Kinniside Bess 5 Kinniside Beauty     6 What Look 12 Ran Time 19.49.

Report. Betwixt the passes of Wrynose and Hard Knott nestled  in the valley lies Cockley Beck ,scenery to die for if you could see it,shrouded in low cloud and persisting down. Therefore not much to say except Jim batty thought Night Vision had won (seventh) Jenny’s Rose notched up her first win of the season.

Miterdale Shadow took his tally to 28 when he won by a distance and another first timer Casanova won by a couple of lengths .Kinnisides had a field day when all six ticketed and what attracted them to Cockley Beck, Magnet of course! ( mine host’s cans)
