Report. A double double at Shap on a pleasant Sunday afternoon,. The Bland – Barrow combination and Ian and Ann Bell. It was also an afternoon that Peter ( Super ) Green slipped and caught the two Burneside winners as Ian wasn’t feeling up to scratchsomebody quipped when was the last time Greeny had two winners in one day, It was the twelfth of never and that’s a long long time !!!.

In the seniors Jenny’s Aura kept up her pursuit of Endure with an easy win over Washington and Buble and likewise in the juniors ” Major” drew level at the top when he easily outpointed his five opponents .

The maiden trail and the consistent Howgill Annabelle  ,again. was an easy winner but she was handed the race when Artemis ran off in the closing stages and by a similar margin in the last Persian Prince was  the winner , Razzle Dazzle finished second and took the lead in the points comp for restricted hounds..

Report . To show that this report is unbiased and fair we will start with the maidens, look at the time – only six seconds slower than the senior trail, that puts the maidens on a par with their counterparts – well ! in theory anyway! . But take into consideration I wasn’t shouting ( backed another one) but lisa gave it her best shot and deserves a win, well done! by the way the prize money is in an envelope marked ” Chair”. Unlucky in the race was My Way which lived up to his name and did it his way which unfortunately wasn’t the right one. The first four did a lap of honour and Fiona did an excellent job in judging the wayward hounds , and to cap it all the first hound to actually cross the tape was Maybe , that’s the one I backed, funny old game!

Onto the seniors and the Michael Renney memorial trails , for those who didn’t know Michael ,he was a bookie of the highest calibre and his proper job was a coalman or a purveyor of anthracite, who’s life was taken away long before he was due and we miss the controversial , but genial gent !

The seniors came onto the sharp downhill descent in a bunch and  out of it came the Rosthwaite hound Bedazzled getting up on the line to pip Thorn Dancer and Menorah who tied for second.

At this Stage the Committee would like to thank the anonymous lady who quickly reported a hound which had become entangled in a wicket gate , fortunately the hound was no worse and if anybody knows who the person was will they please get in touch !

The pups and Black Legend led down the finish to within an “inch! of the line but once more “pipped” this time by Jenny’s Breeze , that’s number 17, Miterdale Shadow could only manage fifth but still retains the Championship lead.

The puppy maidens and Les Reid had a heart-stopping moment when Huntsman’s Magician , who was well clear at the time, decided to go back to the following pack and give them another chance at winning,  but he was still in charge and instead of beating Paddywack by a distance he settled for a dog length. Not a problem but who said Abracadabra go back!

In the final trail , restricted to the quicker of the short trails and won by a veteran, Cherish, completing a kennel double for the Jackson’s in front of Sweet Harmony and Overwater Jack.

Fellside Thu 21st Sept

Open Maidens 1 Two Tone 2 Capetown 3 Thorn Diamond 4 Bronco 5 Artemis 6 Maybe . 13 Ran Time 23.56. Also Ran West Tip – Manna – Sultan – Layla –  – McCoy – Carrick – Eden Rocco..

Report. Persian Bay kept up her momentum with another win , this time at the expense of Accolade and Jenny’s Aura, who was reported to have scaled in the first ten minutes and together with Sweet Harmony put in a circle and at one stage looked like returning to the start.

Huntsman’s Major had a workmanlike success in the juniors beating the over- enthusiastic Nikita with “Billy” in third.

In the last race and the hounds passed the trail Field , “Well spread out!, something was amiss as the winning hound Two Tone took all off five minutes longer than the pups to complete the same trail.

Report> A dampish ,misty evening in  the Miterdale valley and back from holiday the Farrens ,—- Songbird, also back from holiday , Dearham not  Ibiza! She came in front and held off the strong challenge of Buble with Kinniside Beauty finishing strongly in third.

Visibility was  poor and it is likely that the second pup to finish never saw “Shadow” notching up win 32 and is two clear in the puppy championship, A brace of Kinnisides were second and third and Hawkswood ,another runner was still missing at midday on Thursday.

Black eyed Pea won easily in the last with Kinniside Bess in second making it a kinniside treble for second place.

P.S Hawkswood was returned home , none the worse for her experience.

Report. Another meeting spent out on the road, and in the  seniors the field broke into two halves at about halfway and putting aside her run here last time Persian Bay came home by a small margin from Sambuca.

The puppy trail coming to the last road and would you believe a person driving down “a road closed’    just as the hounds were approaching. I moved my car , turned around and the leaders had gone, apparently it was  the three that had a good lead at the first road and Cuchulainn who was a fast catching fourth.

In the last Thorn Diamond and Westgate Autumn , crossed the last road together and Autumn after losing ground made it up on the sharp but steep uphill climb to the finish to put a smile on the promoter’s face.

Open Restricted 1 Ben 10 2 Cracking Gold 3 JLS 4 Starlight 5 Foxparke invisible . 5 Ran Time 20 44.

Report. Washington beat Sambuca for win number six of the season and I managed to get him on film . There wasn’t a great distance between all eight runners and it was only in the later stages that the first two pulled away from Cool  Enough in third ,who was in the rear for most of the trail.

The puppy trail and current table leader Miterdale Shadow could only manage fifth place after losing ground at the halfway stage, the race became a dual between Mystery Bound and Rio the former getting the better by a length, she is in the capable hands of the Brownlee’s whilst Glenis and Ray are on holiday and as one person put it to Victor who caught the winner , “When was the last time you were in the winners enclosure.”

The maiden trail and Meadow Josie came clear in the last 50 meters to beat Captain Jack and Barncroft Gold.

Ben 10 came home in the restricted trail consisting of only 5 runners I suppose three meetings ,15 trails over the weekend in the middle of September, what do you expect!

On Sunday a tongue in cheek experiment was carried out regarding aniseed of old and the present day aniseed. half of the 50 people preferred the scent of the old  and the other half was divided by the modern and couldn’t tell any difference.

Although this was not an accurate test it was noted that while we were on the field the old aniseed crystallized whilst the other stayed in liquid form.  There might be something to work on or it could be a load of balls!

Report. Two kennel doubles at Mirkholme on Saturday, Bedazzled and Cherish for the Jackson’s of Rosthwaite and from O’erwater came Stanley and Hally. On the steepest downhill finish in the hound trailing calendar and two obstacles at the bottom to contend with it is a true test for any hound. In the seniors four hounds were in contention at the top but Bedazzled came away although Persian Bay made ground on the run in , the first favourite of the day duly obliged.

Similarly in the maidens ,the ‘drop’ sorted them out and although Night Vision looked an assured winner ,Manna finished with purpose and only failed by a head to win.

Overwater Stanley followed up his mid-week win over the improving Hi -Mac and completing the double was Overwater Hally in the All-In.

Just six in the veterans , Cherish and TwoTone  were neck and neck on the downhill section but an awkward jump put paid to Two Tone’s chances and Cherish completed a favourite four-timer.

Report : There was a story going around that” we are using our own mixture “- I far as I can ascertain  they have been using their own mixture all season, paraffin from a known source and aniseed from the same dealer, made by Spike who also looks after the rags, any variation of this is against the rules. All I can say is Queen beat Buble- in the seniors – Hawkswood second in the juniors , Capetown won  the maidens all travelled from the Westmorland Area, an area renowned for sticking to the rules regarding the mixture.

To put matters right – It is not my mixture but mixture that has been in Black and White since the beginning of time.

Back to the evenings entertainment , a few bob on Galemire Gracie went astray as the Dawson’s Kendal pair Queen and Buble took a one two in the seniors , not much between the three with Songbird in fourth ,at the moment in the McMaster kennel at Dearham whilst Raymond and Denise take a break in Ibiza.                                                    In the juniors ” Shadow” strengthened  his position at the top of the table with a facile victory, around a half – minute in front of Hawkswood and Steel End..

And the bookies bogey , veteran Capetown won the maidens from , yet another Kinniside ,this time “Beauty”  , half a length separating them.

Report. Not a pleasant day but it could have been worse.

The senior trail and without demeaning the hounds if you look at the times recorded the maidens ran the dead rag a few seconds faster than their counterparts this suggests that all wasn’t well with  the senior trail and with the favourite Galemire Grace and three others returning to the start and the winner won by a country mile.

The senior maidens and the first seven had pulled clear and Summer Rose beat Howgill Annabella and Yogi, not sure of the distance as Baden Powell had called me up for duty.

Huntsman’s Major won by 50 metres in the juniors, the funny thing here was, that seven pups crossed the road and having time to watch them running up the trod to the finish  I counted eight.

And for the final trail I sat in the car counted 16  and went home.

Another afternoon on the road, shortage of scouts in the Eskdale valley or, is it a ploy to keep me out of the way? By the way I’ve got eyes in the back of my head!

The seniors and Songbird set the early pace but as they approached the finish it had developed into a two dog race, Jenny’s Aura and Thorn Dancer, the former winning for the tenth time , second place in the Championship and with Endure still on the side lines could make champion two years running..

The senior maidens and there is an old saying in trailing circles if a hound is said to be lame ,then back it and, in goes Night Vision, slightly lame after Sandale, must have worn it off said Neil with a smile .

Miterdale Shadow, long odds on and won easily – but it was the only hound out of all of them that made a pig’s ear of the last road, mind it had time for a cup of tea at Tom Posses’ and still win.

And in the last- three crossed the last road together :A red’un and two locals. The red’un won by a small margin- Bewitched in front of  Jack and Billy.

Report: Not a lot to report on just as the amount of runners.

Three favourites obliged but the wily old bookie Dennis wouldn’t come to any harm, mine was second favourite in the last at evens! by the way it was the only hound that failed to get a ticket.

There might have been a shortage of runners but that didn’t mean a shortage of excitement, Sambuca just held off the challenge of Quiet Otter , similarly Rio just over Black Legend and Bronco didn’t have a lot to spare in the last. Newcomer Caspar was being shown around the trail and a phone call back to the field said ” Don’t take  the photo of the senior winner until I get back.”

Open Restricted 1 Grange Music 12 Ran  only one finished.

Veterans Cancelled.

Report. It certainly wasn’t trailing weather, visibility on the trail field was minimal, but you could see the action lower down. And that is where the report comes from. Firstly unlucky 13 well it was if you went to Sandale with a maiden and came home without one., both Willow Bay and Grange Music fell into this category.

The seniors made a number of mistakes but  on the whole managed well in what can be described as a shade damp. Willow bay led by 50 yards at the last road and there wasn’t a lot between all thirteen, in contrast , the puppy trail were well spread , The first three at the finish were well clear at the first road and Red Will and Magician had a nice lead at the last road over Cul ( Beau) Bronco had made ground on the leaders but five of the field had their own race in a time similar to the seniors.

The veterans race was cancelled at last common sense prevailed.

The next trail got under way , with reservations from the scouts as too the wisdom of racing in the light of the conditions. This was born out when Grange Music was the only hound to compete the course and the last of the runners were  rounded up somewhat late into the evening.

Then to round off the night we came across a van or to put it properly half a van in the middle of the road ,courtesy of somebody running a give way sign, luckily for Brian and Shirley nobody was seriously hurt.
