Report.  There is an old proverb- A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and as far as the championship of both seniors and juniors are concerned it looks ,after tonight’s results, that it could be a bridge to far for the Glenridding kennel  with Jenny’s Aura and Huntsman’s Major suffering surprise defeats at Buttermere.

Aura had her field well strung out and looked a certainty, but at a crucial point of the trail she circled losing valuable ground and could only finish fourth to Menorah who short- headed  Jenny’s Delight on the line and in the pups for reasons only known to himself  ” Major ” crossed and re-crossed the beck at halfway and then took the scenic route back along the trail to be the only non-finisher of the afternoon. Red Will showed in front in the finishing meadow but gave the lead away to ” Becks” Foxparke Golden Balls who’s length win initiated a double for the Napier kennel when Wansfell won the maidens for yours truly and his mate Grace, who apparently fed him sweets, after a stewards inquiry the result stands as the only dope involved was its owner. Oh ! and the times , the short trails once more within ten seconds!

Report: Well what can you say, right in front of your very eyes, ignoring or perhaps not hearing, the shouts of their owners, the pups  all of them that had made the finish jumped the fence and set off around the senior trail , take note mixture sceptics!, not one pup crossed the tape in the finishing field and therefore the trail was declared void and neither Miterdale Shadow or Huntsman’s Major could add to their total, and if the first two had crossed the tape would Black Legend have won ?. More to the point is that all the hounds were accounted for , Jenny’s Breeze  being found the morning after . On that note it was an afternoon to forget for the Glenriddding kennel as senior championship challenger Jenny’s Aura returned to the start ,, in the trail won by Liz , although rather reluctant ,she held on to win by a dog length.

In the senior maidens ,glasses were raised as Fireman Sam got himself over the line in first place  although it wasn’t without drama as he weaved his way up the hill Keystone his nearest challenger decided to follow him  and Sam as he often does stops to pee but this time he was over the line!

I wasn’t on the field for the last race but they all  came up the finish but ,what would you expect of puppy maidens in October !

Report:  The weather relented, the field was still sodden but what’s more to the point is- we were in business- . And a chance for Huntsman’s Major to make up ground on Miterdale’s three win cushion in the puppy championship, but, not if Black legend has his way , he led until the last obstacle and after falling and hindering “Major” still led on the run-in only to be passed by Rio with “Major” back in third.

As well, the senior championship is still in abeyance with Endure sidelined on 17 Jenny’s Aura needs 4 wins to take the title, perhaps, now , a task to big , but not impossible and that’s what will make an intriguing finale to the 2017 season , the final say might lie with the weather!

As for the seniors at Dearham, a surprise win for Liz , her second of the season, which put a smile on the bookies faces, she  beat Quiet Otter and SIlver Dusk and the dreaded “water jump”.

The other three trails went to form with wins for Meadow Josie, Cracking Gold and Westgate Belle.

Dearham Tues 10th October

Seniors  1 Sambuca 2 Silver Dusk 3 Cool enough 4 Quiet Otter 5 Liz  6 Arizona. 6 ran Time 30.13.

Veterans 1 Westgate Belle 2 Free Spirit  3 Jimmy Choo 4 Flash Dance 4 Ran Time 17.15.

Report. A distinct October feeling at Dearham yesterday afternoon, parked on the road, after today’s soaking we’ll be lucky to see grass again this season, only 26 hounds for four trails and the timekeeper nearly got the three short trails in the ten second margin.

Sambuca won her seventh of the season after a wayward ewe put paid to Quiet Otter’s chance, she won by a couple of lengths from Silver Dusk.

In the pups all eyes were on “Shadow” and he didn’t disappoint coming from fifth place to overhaul his second in command Black Legend near the line to win by a length. Mystery Bound was the unlucky hound apparently you have to jump the last dyke not swim it.

Cracking Gold justified favouritism in the restricted and Westgate Belle would have been a prohibitive price in the veterans if Ian had stayed, 3-0 down and four runners, a tactical withdrawal.

Report to follow ( off to Dearham) . Starter for ten– All was Sweet Harmony, Batty turned up to a cheer reserved for a rosette throwing gold medallist, the finish steep but like Manna from heaven they descended , Delight might have scuppered Aura’s title  Breeze nearly did Major and out of the mist the Sandyman cometh and for the last time in an illustrious career , Artisan was first over the tape bringing down the curtain and bowing out gracefully.

The senior trail was shortened due to remedial work or to put it bluntly , a pile of stone was in the way, last time a number of hounds ran over them, couldn’t risk it again and what was the outcome , 29 seconds to spare, good timing ????. Jenny’s delight showed Jenny’s Aura how to descend but there wasn’t a lot between them over the line, Queen was a close third..

The maidens and after a scale or two it was once more the downhill finish that determined the winner, as Manna relishing the “drop” was to strong for the junior Thorn Diamond.

Huntsman’s major had his work cut out to pass and hold off Jenny’s Breeze with Cuchulainn a close third in the puppy trail and following on was the non- winners and the smile on  Mrs Brumage nee Crowe’s face said it all as Sandyman ( Sandy Crowe )held on to beat Kinniside Molly and West Tip ( minus a lead).

Sweet Harmony made the journey from Skelton worthwhile when she won the restricted trail from Paloma Faith and in the veterans winning for the last time and bringing to an end an illustrious  career was ARTISAN who kept the favourite Capetown at bay to win by a length.

Thanks to all that attended and a gateman’s tale,. John Wharton who is our regular gateman does his job very diligently and although at a disadvantage because he doesn’t know everybody caused a ripple of laughter when he asked Robyn Napier if she had any  hounds, the answer she gave- yes! nine!. ( plus a master and whipper -in.

REPORT.

We start with a difference , somebody said I  look forward to your report,

Firstly a thank you to the local farmers,, a special thank you to the two trailers , Ian and Tony, a thankless task in difficult conditions, the Whitehaven Area Committee and anybody else I have missed.

Now for the rest of the day- count to ten —-slowly 1—2—3 then take a step back and look at yourselves, you would have thought that everything was done on purpose.

The hound that returned to the trail field wasn’t chased back again on purpose, the hounds that ran off on the finish of the restricted trail didn’t do it to annoy everybody.

It was one of those days that you get now and then, one of those days!

The restricted trail , the Judge is the only person to Judge, he or she can resort to the camera if necessary and the tape is only a guide to help the judge in arriving at his decision . Therefore if the first six decide to cross the line showing their backsides , jumping a gate and disappearing then how an earth can he with conviction name a result. Those who disagree with the decision of the area Committee , there are proceedings in place and they don’t include Frisbee style , rosette throwing ., still counting, 1   2   3   4.

Now for the trails – In the seniors “Aura led them a merry dance until they disappeared from view and after been reported  getting  wrong at the road crossing and then when most of the field seemed to be in with a shout coming of the fell towards the finish.  It still was a surprise when outsider Accolade took the cheers ( bookies)Aura was second and Denzil in third.

In the senior maidens and Maybe popped up getting the better of Sultan and a posse of foxparkes , and it was a pup trail slower than the seniors.

The eagerly awaited race between the leading pups didn’t disappoint as “Shadow” got the verdict over ” Major ” by half a length and in the puppy maidens the only finisher was Major’s junior Sergeant James in a five minute plus five minutes trail..

Black Eyed Pea made it two in a week when beating only six rivals led in by Free Spirit.

Sorry no videos .

Report . Buttermere , a lone fixture ,no opposition, plenty of runners ,something for bookies and punters alike, competition for the hounds, like garlic bread ,the future!!!

In the seniors as early as the first few minutes did Jenny’s Aura stamp her authority on the trail and hardly ever headed stormed home to win comfortably from Menorah and Thorn Dancer.

The puppy trail and an opportunity for Huntsman’s Major to ,peg one back from Miterdale Shadow, and he didn’t disappoint with an easy win from Red Will and Foxparke (dancing ) Billy Elliot.

Now for the maidens and there is a saying in trailing “Be patient the last shall be first” now I am not saying that the first hound home should have been last but it was a tipsy-turvy race as they negotiated the footpath and then the descent to the last field, the lead changing constantly  until Great Gable appeared with a yard or two and he won with consummate ease, much to Liz’s surprise, the rest of them well the one that did lead as they turned for home finished last.

Black Eyed Pea held on in the vets from a fast finishing favourite Cherish and once again the three short trail times -all within 10 seconds.

Report : The race for the junior title tilted in favour of Miterdale Shadow as he outpointed Huntsman’s Major at Dearham last night Shadow is now three clear into the last month.

The afternoon’s events got underway with a one -two in the seniors for the ( in order of seniority)  Caspar, Chutzy, Neil, and Gordon, Sambuca , who finished strongly to beat Quiet Otter and Silver Dusk , a close third.

Thorn Diamond had no trouble  in winning the maidens and equally Westgate Belle in the last.

Report : A new venue , spoilt by the weather, nevertheless the potential is there for the future, long finish, good viewing., accessible field. I say good viewing , on a clear day I can see for miles and miles but the hills today were mist shrouded to such an extent I nearly lost a tenner on summat I couldn’t see.

The seniors and they came in two by two, the windy conditions combined with a fresh venue somewhat contributed to the hounds being spread the length of the fell but not taking anything away from  Tommy’s who kept on strongly to beat Willow Bay and Sambuca.

The senior maidens and four hounds came clear the indomitable Fireman Sam in front , but it was the finishing speed of Summer Rose that won the day beating another sharp finisher in Maybe with swinging in third was Sultan.

Now for the juniors and could the Major pull one back on his rival, not if Black Legend can rid of his seconditis and he did, but not without trying , reluctantly winning from Nikita and Red Will.

Only six Puppy Maidens and getting away from the other five ,or Escaping as it’s called, was Evie Moore’s charge Escape and the best finish of the afternoon concerned the next four home.

REPORT. The British weather, a phone call to Eskdale Saturday morning to confirm that the show was on and to let the organisers know that due to the weather I wouldn’t be present. The answer, the sun is shining ,the field is dry ,what’s the problem, the problem there’s a foot of water in the main road , all fire appliances are on full flood alert and the wind and rain is due west..

Apparently the depression was over Millom ( nothing new then) and missed out Eskdale and therefore out came the sunglasses , chair, and an ice cream.

Oh there was five trails and another Rosthwaite double , this time in the shape of Bewitched and Cherish, the former won the restricted trail ,or the silent finish event, we want a short trail but we’d rather not win!

In contrast Jenny’s Aura, with all guns blazing, notched up win number 13 and is now only 4 behind Endure , she won with plenty in hand as did Miterdale Shadow in the juniors  and in the senior maidens Kinniside Beauty held off the three challengers to record an overdue success, whilst her four kennel mates also finished in the first six.

Report. The race for the puppy Championship is coming to the boil both Miterdale Shadow and Huntsman’s Major are neck and neck on 33 wins apiece, tonight Major had to pull out all the stops as He came from third to win by a length from the ever present Black Legend (second again )and Nikita who is running to her early season form.

And while we are on the short trails, veteran Cherish showed she still has young legs as she held her junior Sweet Harmony all the way to the line in a time , all of two seconds faster than the pups.

And while we are still on the short trails,. Bedazzled came from behind to beat Marlou  in the seniors and was the first leg of a double ,once more ,for Rosthwaite. The favourite Jenny’s Aura had a bit of ground to make up from halfway and finished fourth with Thorn Dancer in third splitting the Borrowdale four.
