The joint meeting between the HTA and the BHTA was well organised and went without a hitch apart from the ban on yours truly ,who is not allowed access to the entries by order of entry clerk, so if the entries are sometimes a bit hit and miss, you know the reason!.

It was a clean sweep for the HTA started off by Carol Harrison’s Blondie ( which is black, brown and white ) confirming last weeks result with Tom Thumb in second and the next four , same as last week!

The puppy maidens and a 1-2-3 for the Abrams- McMaster kennel together with kennelmaid Sharon and Darren ( whoever’s winning)-Rhythm- Rover -Rita together with Rhyme and Ranger and Silver Dusk in the senior maidens made it a special day for the Dearham kennel and having trained Arizona to win the seniors last season and still having a vested interest, winning again , this time for the HTA chairman and rejuvenated  trainer together with Caroline. It has been upwards of 43 years that I’ve bent down with a bait tin to catch a winner. not forgetting lucky mascot Sadie!.

And not to be left out the HTA’s vice -chair Paul Airey hollered his veteran up the ploughed field finish to get the better of former border hound Denton Eclipse and in the restricted event the border hounds Elsa Star and Firelight came close to lifting a trail when finishing second and third splitting the two Edens’ Rossi and Rocco.

As reported the even money favourite Arizona took the seniors when overhauling the long time leader Canny Mover on the tortuous ploughed field finish in similar fashion Meadow Dixie won the maidens and long time supporter David Clifford hounds with the “Eden” prefix first and fourth in the restricted trail and a gamble thwarted in the last when Billy Broncho was beaten into second place by Silver Dusk, let you know what the fly on the wall says when” Toddy” visits Joe.

Report :  The conclusion , after the event, and the answer is that 98 hounds can’t be wrong and that the starting end trailer cut three to four minutes running time off the trail. During the puppy event and after an area meeting it was decided to let the result stand if the hounds completed within the time limit. There was a few  mutterings from spectators who had expected the event to be made void. Why? because the hounds hadn’t gone where they were suppose to immaterial  of where the trailer had been. In the end and you can see from the times all three short trails were in a 15 second window and legal. The question now is? what happens next time.!!!

The seniors got underway in driving rain which turned to hailstones, turning the surrounding fells white and the spectators blue. And the first home was Buble just in front of kennelmate Queen with a couple to watch in third and fourth, Jenny’s Aura and Bewitched.

The juniors , and having persuaded the public we are going the right way,  were led home by Huntsman’s Nimrod and New Agenda well clear of Best Mate in third.

All eyes were on the maidens and as reported they went the same route as the pups and were led home by Manna , who beat West Tip by a couple of lengths. And in the last trail Night Vision handled by Gerard Tynan ( two veterans ) whilst Neil’s on holiday, beat Sweet Harmony.

Report : The only meet over the weekend attracted 169  hounds and the biggest field – the all-in.

In the senior trail as they came down the fell in the distance it was , two white ‘uns and a coloured ‘in. It transpired that it was Arizona- Buble – and Marli . The former led out of sight in the finishing dip but appeared third behind the Canadian warbler and the favourite , Buble ran on well and finished a few lengths clear of Arizona and Marli.

Wild Gypsy justified favouritism in the maidens winning easily from Artemis and Meadow Josie .

The pups and leading all the way down and up the finish was huntsman’s Nimrod winning for the fifth time at the expense of Tom Thumb and Cuckoo Lane .

The non- winners saw a one- two for the Abram’s “R” team from Dearham , Rhythm beating Rover and one of two seniors West Tip in third.

Report. 43 pups that’s a lot of runners for Lazonby , perhaps the dog  produce might be held here ?. The race provided an exiting finish ,Cracksman beating Ranger by a head with Tom Thumb a nose behind in third, followed by fourth to tenth within a few meters .

The seniors and Huntsman’s Major ,last seasons Junior runner – up stopped and returned to the start after only a minute then was slipped in the all- in and promptly streaked home by a hundred , funny old game’  The rest were led home by the Kendal pair Queen and Buble from the Sandylands with veteran Prudence in third.

Now a tale of an anonymous washerwoman, she offered to help a certain gent slip one his hounds and consequently caught it as well.  Previously on the social media she had said they could do with a wash , which the owner just laughed and dismissed with his usual ginner reply, now as she returned with the hound, instead of going to its own vehicle, she took the opportunity and went to her car , where she gave it a dam good scrub”. Where’s my hound ,” said the owner . in Wendy’s car wash not Red but Ginger !

Report. The sun came out, and a pleasant day ensued – Caroline Graham celebrated her 21st, a few wished they were. Colin bet on the Grand National and was rolled -over, Lisa . Donald and Joe collected their first wins of the season and thanks to Les Reid for sponsoring the afternoon’s events.

Thorn Dancer ,clipped out , slipped down the finish akin to renard and won easily from Steel and Shadow with Kinniside ( consistent Joe ) in fourth. his owners were last seen thumbing a lift to the Bower.

Four pups came clear and in a close finish Babylon was given the race by a head  from New Agenda and also in another close finish Joe and substitute Gerard’s Night Vision beat Sandyman and Cuchulainn by two- half lengths.

Canny mover cut out the early work and would have gone close to winning if she hadn’t made a mistake at Grassings road end. Report. The first trail meeting of the season at Low Place and on a fine night Thorn Dancer scored an overdue success over the local hound Miterdale Shadow, The red’un was well down the finish before she was spotted and a few onlookers were counting their brass as it looked like an easy win for “Shadow” as it was , Dancer was a convincing winner and  all three Miterdales were in the money.

The pup trail and the locals retaliated when Miterdale Spirit won with plenty in hand. Babylon ran on for second in front of the two siblings Best Mate and Cuckoo Lane, who incidentally was short of catching feed as his owner had fed both second and third..

In the Restricted trail the locals once again had to settle for second place as Overwater Hally, supplementing his maiden success on Saturday won easily Miterdale proper was in second whilst Overwater Jack was third..

Report. Once again Canny Mover showed her liking of the Kirkbride trail when holding on to beat Eclipse and former champ Prudence to notch her second win.

The win puts Les and Pat Black at the top of the table, enough to get Pat mobile as she instructed Les how to  rub her down (dog not Pat)

The pup trail and the Patterdale hound Huntsman’s Nimrod made it a hat-trick,once again in second was Cracksman and lady Million in third  These three were clear of Tom Thumb.

The first non-winners of the season and only two pups didn’t qualify and  the pups took the first three places , Babycham ,just, from Blondie and Babylon, a case of father beating  daughter.

Report. Back to Bower for the third time and a different  winner at each meet

in the seniors,this time it was last seasons puppy champ Miterdale Shadow who got the better of Thorn Dancer but if Huntsman’s Major , who , according to the “glasses” had taken the lead,, had not turned back , what would have been the outcome?

Nevertheless we know the outcome in the pups when the ex-chairs ”  Cuckoo Lane ” completed the hat -trick once more at the expense of “Seth “. But Overwater Hally got some compensation for the Irvings when winning the maidens.

Just a mention for the Mcartneys , Joe and Neil, nothing startling ,but I had night vision the other evening and couldn’t see the wood from the trees.

Daughter chases dad, not a film but Escape trying to catch Try Again in the restricted trail, and  after giving her every chance turned his attention on Evie and gave her the “slip”.
