Report> Our special thanks to The Cockermouth and Workington
area committees for the amount of work put in, before and during the day. Margaret and Tony on the gate, Fiona ,starter and Judge and her band of catchers, timekeeper- Big John. entries by Margaret and Alan O’ Fees dulcet tones as “shouter out”. Trails manager Neil and Phil and the trailers Phil, Caspar , Ian and Darren. Thank you the farmers and landowners, the scouts, all afternoon on the road- Gordon and Mary – Dickie , Ike and Sheila. Tony and Neil and Neil’s Mam and Dad. Raffle ticket sellers Fiona and David. And a good evenings frivolity was enjoyed in Cockermouth and Sambuca’s all round was the shout, courtesy of the winning owner.
Not forgetting the sponsors . Area Committee. Supporters club and those who got paid donated the money back . All in All it realised a profit of around £300.
The trails- and would the hounds follow their noses or guess. The answer ,” no worries ” all of them adjusted to the altered finish and it provided the spectators with a ” cracking ” view especially those visiting and seeing hound trailing for the first time, all the way from Exmoor and Norfolk.
In the seniors Endure and Tommy’s Legacy held the lead as they came of Millstone Moor and stalking them in third was Sambuca. onto the long drawn out finish and although Endure persevered ,He hadn’t any answer to Sambuca’s speed and to the shouts of “go on Sammy” she pulled away to win nicely , Washington ran on for third making it a home 1/2/3.
The senior maidens and the well supported Cracking Gold had a good lead at halfway but was joined on the finish by Wild Gypsy and the two of them had a battle royal and it was in the final 10 meters that “Gold” got the upper hand.
Miterdale Shadow considered by many to be in trailing terms “ A Good un ‘” showed they could be right when he outclassed his rivals and won easily from Black Legend and still without an open success , in third place Cuchulainn.
Fourteen in the puppy maidens and fourteen on the finish together. I suppose you could say that all fourteen were in with a shout and shout they did- victory going to Ray and Glenis with Mystery Bound who just held of the challenge of “Knobbly Knees” Brian Rowlandson’s Blue Solo, Who, tongue in cheek, remarked” the finish wasn’t long enough” third was Provincial who along with the winner had shown potential as long ago as spring.
The Open restricted and yet again another favourite when Quiet Otter got the better of long time leader Dairy Lightning and a smiling Caspar catching the winner and collecting the winning trophy.
Only six in the veterans and reduced to five when ” Canny” came back and this developed into a two dog race and Westgate Belle ,helped by Artisans hurdling ability, ran out an easy winner for the two “Belles” Susan and Sarah.( brownie points)
