Report: A fine night and a shade warmer at Low Place for the final trails of the early season spell in the Miterdale valley.

Debra was made an even money shot in the seniors but failed to ticket as the spoils went to Galemire Grace at the expense of the ‘ dancing’ Marli who threw away a winning lead, Little Messy , Jazz Singer and Washington were close up third, fourth and fifth.

The pup trail and only seven runners of which one returned to the start, nevertheless ,and a case of ‘deja – vu’ as of Monday evening- the same three pups, but this time Daisy Dream got the upper hand on the downhill finish over Bewitched and won by ten metres – the favourite ‘Dancer’ was a remote third.

In the open restricted it was a welcome return to the winners enclosure for Geoff and Barbara Jones when Starlight ,formerly Aintree, won nicely from Sental and Cartier.

Report:

A fine night and a lot warmer , perhaps we might see spring after all.

The senior trail ,after a slightly altered start, came past the field after  twelve minutes in single file- eleven hounds in with a ‘shout’. But, on the long run in , it was down to three hounds and after a head to head race it was B E P that stuck his head out on the line for a narrow win over ‘Bethan’ ,Jenny’s a close up third.

In the junior trail ,and not for the first time at Rusland ; we had a clear winner when Christine Brownlee’s Menorah lost her maiden tag winning in  splendid isolation. The last three to finish provided the crowd with the best finish of the night – a precursor for the Rusland show maidens- perhaps?

The biggest field of the night, or perhaps one of Ruslands biggest fields, was won emphatically by the favourite Explore . She easily beat Tommy’s legacy and third Jimmy Nik and the  nine runners in the last were led in by another easy winner Tinkerbelle, making it a successful night for the ‘locals’ with three winners.

Report. Another cold evening but on the plus side ‘running weather’.

In the seniors the Kentmere hound Debra continued her winning ways with a five length victory over ‘Arnie ‘justifying favouritism. She was always in the ‘race’ which is more than can be said for ‘Malone’ who at halfway was well behind but in the end finished a rallying third.

The pups and at the start some hounds got rather low, including Championship leader Daisy Dream, giving the rest of the field a reasonable lead. But on the finishing meadow ‘Daisy’ showed in front and it was only in the last strides did Bewitched get up to win ,the other ‘red ‘un ‘was third, thus completing a ‘Jackson’ double as Bedazzled won the last comfortably from Blueboy and Persian Sun.

Report..

Prudence took a winning step towards retaining her senior title with a narrow victory over course winner JLS. She was always prominent and was a generously priced 4/1 ,the consistent Razzle Dazzle was third in front of the two Jennys’ who had their own race for minor tickets.

The junior trail and once again it was the rivalry between Arizona and Bracelet that was the center of attention- and they didn’t let the side down with another tremendous battle to the tape and once more it was Arizona that stuck his head in front . That is the third trail in a row that they have been separated by a head! And representing ‘ top of the pops’ Paloma Faith in third place.

There was an exciting finish to the non-winners and the spoils went to George and Carol’s Mr Dec denying David and Michelle a double as Eden Rosa fairly scooted up the finish to win the restricted trail unchallenged.

Report.

Lamplugh : And it was nearly ‘Groundhog Day’. In the seniors and an identical finish to Wednesday except this time Celtic Malone proved the stronger and reversed placings with Endure- once again Washington was a close third.

And a similar story in the juniors with Thorn Dancer ‘burning’ up the ground to force a dead heat with ‘Kraka’ who looked a certain winner and if that is familiar then what about former course winner Persian Sky matching strides but on the wrong side of the fence just like Wednesday.

In the Open maidens Explore ,third on Wednesday, came from third to win going away and in the process landed an odd bet or two. The minor tickets went to the regulars( see Mon and Wed).

And just to complete the day along came evergreen Dairy Diamond this time showing a ‘clean pair of heels’ to his fellow age group .

Report:

The weather was kind for our return to Lamplugh and in the seniors Endure had learnt from his previous visit when  he was ‘out off the race’ at an early stage. He led at the road crossing but on the finish he didn’t have things his own way as Celtic Malone was in close contention, in the end he  held on for a length victory., Washington improved into third place and ‘catching the eye’ in fifth place- first time there- Black-Eyed Pea.

The puppy trail and on Monday Thorn Dancer finished behind the Judge in the wrong field and Persian Sky won . Last night, would you believe it, Persian Sky went behind and ‘Dancer’ went over the line -” funny old game’.

The OM and here Huntsman’s Jewel edged out ‘Trooper'( five points) and Explore.

On Radio 4 the programme called Open Country was aired and what an excellent advert for our sport. Although it was ‘radio” it portrayed a picture and captured hound trailing in a different light that most people will be able to understand.

98 runners on a cold ,windy evening at ‘ exposed lamplugh’.Despite the weather the hardy souls were treated to four excellent and close finishes.

Fireman Sam cut out the early pace together with Acacia but they both had to give way to Debra’s superior finishing speed ,the Kentmere bitch won going away to register a few tidy wagers.

The pup trail and here Persian Sky showed her liking for the course and won well from Huntsman’s Kraka and Jazz Band who showed in front but the downhill finish once again proving hard work. Saturdays winner Thorn Dancer finished the wrong side of the fence.

OM – A quiz question -Name a Champion that won a maiden trail aged seven.

Look no further than evergreen ‘Diamond’. Half way down the hill and nobody knew what was in front ,all those trails she’s won and soon ‘unknown’. By the look of Arthurs face I don’t think she was ‘expected’ but win she did in front of Mr Ant and the consistent Doll.

And the final trail in the gathering gloom was won in style by Gerard’s Celtic Ty ,ten yards in front of the favourite Jazz Singer.

Report

What a difference a day makes (three actually) to the weather. A pleasant  afternoons trailing and we could view the hounds and what’s more the fell was clear for the trailers.

Twenty five seniors ran and Galemire Grace, who drove most of the trail, kept on resolutely for Cath and Kenny, to register her first success of the season. She held on to beat Endure And Dawn who with a number of hounds were in close contention.

In the senior maidens Dark Ruby finished alone, although reluctant to cross the tape, she was a welcome winner for James and John Oldcorn, putting Flookburgh on the map!. Another Bay was second well clear of the remainder.

The junior trail, and a few punters thought that Persian Bay had won, well with 20 yards to go -yes! it was in front but stayed low while Thorn Dancer came down the mown track gaining valuable ground to win by three yards. ( Take note James Batty). Lady Anne was in third.

Where’s Wallie won the Open Restricted ,for Martin and Barbara , by 1/2 length from Keystone and the placed hounds which after some reflection were official announced but with that many photos of the finish and in hindsight might, and I say might,be in the wrong order.

I’m glad to report that Da Look was recovered the following morning, apparently he spent the night at a b/b.

32 runners but only half the field managed to complete the course, the puppy trailer reported that they were scaling badly and consequently some returned on the starting end and the ‘fly’ ones jumped into the scouts van, all hounds were accounted for and thanks to Robert and Emma for staying on the road crossing.

All I can say about the conditions is that if we’re encountering global warming then the Greens ( party ) should have been bussed up to Corney last night . You opened the car door and it bloody nearly blew away.

We entertained two people from Dorset who were thoroughly intrigued by the sport and laughed when told they wouldn’t be getting their gate money back . £8 for one trail welcome to hound trailing.

Report

May Day at the top of Kirkstone Pass and it stayed fine in fact it was a really pleasant afternoon  and it was excellent conditions for those 140 hounds that participated.

Just 15 seniors faced the starter and at 14 minutes Marli led from  Jenny’s Choice (see Video for the rest) and she kept up the relentless pace to just about the tape where she held on to a narrow victory over Endeavour the fast finishing Jazz Singer was third.

The Senior maidens and here former champion Dairy Diamond took on such hounds as Tagget and bitch produce winner Bedazzled. And it was Bedazzled who showed her rivals a clean pair of heels keeping up the Jacksons big race tradition. She was a four to one shot not bad for a pup that won eleven trails and ticketed thirty three times  and had finished second and third over the pup trail   .Explore was second and Miterdale force was up to her tricks again but got over the line for third in front of two more reluctant finishers.

The Puppy trail and a  field of twelve which included four maidens considering there are only nine pup winners, only Persian Bay was missing, it was a full turn out.

What might have been–Daisy Dream went head over heels and Bracelet missed the wall Bewitched ran wide and Huntsman’s Kraka drove most of the trail, So a deserved win even allowing for the ‘hard luck ‘ she was eventually chased home by kennelmate ‘Kooga’ with ‘Daisy’ third.

The puppy maidens and a tasty field of potential winners. And After five minutes running most of the thirty one runners were in contention ; all the hounds for all the trails cross the road at the same point every hound foot for foot on the trail except for this trail where the leader took a slight diversion and would you believe it every one bar the final hound followed it, you’d think they were tied together. What was in front? a red ‘un.

Onto the finish and Try Time, emulating kennelmate Try Again of two years ago, held off the fast finishing Meadow Josie and close up Paloma Faith to record a win for Jack and Jonty. By the way after his win the owners accepted the explanation of why the finishing trod was visible, trying times for a promoter !

And last but not least the biggest field of the day and the bigger the field bigger the certainty came to mind as last seasons pre -season championship favourite Little Messi trounced her rivals with an emphatic victory, Kerrymore finished second and ‘ Arnie ‘was third’. The time of the trail was the second fastest time recorded for the short trail you wouldn’t believe who is the fastest.

Report

A short and brief summary of the Evening at Oulton.

The Senior trail and would it be a slower trail without the Dearham kennelmates running – not according to the times. At the main road crossing ‘ Dixie’ led with Tan Ted and Prudence in close attendance, over the last road and Prudence had a narrow lead over Ted and it looked a two dog race but they didn’t reckon with a final burst from Dixie as she split them in the final strides for a head victory.

Bracelet and Persian Bay renewed their rivalry and once again the narrow victory went to Bracelet ,together with Arizona the three of them were inseparable on the beck edge, only for Arizona to drop back and finish 100 metres in third.

Butch had a run around on the finish , poor Anne was flying around like a blue-arsed fly .forgive the pun ,was he looking for ‘Sundance’.

By the way : Get well soon Mal!

Report

Well, well, the second of May, David Crowe was clipped out ( beard) and it was freezing,,a cold easterly wind hit the Lamplugh  trail field and quite a few didn’t venture from their cars.

In the seniors the trail was over for last years pups before the first road crossing.

Fireman Sam, Endure, Songbird and Galemire Grace being amongst those not in the running. It was up to those with course knowledge  and Serenity finished well to see off Discard and Night Vision. Although no bets were taken on Serenity it was still the favourite now that’s Hound Trailing.

The pups and odds on favourite Daisy Dream was looking for her seventh win but she couldn’t contend with the Browns’ second string Persian Gold, Oban Express was third and the winners sister in fourth.

The open Maidens and Willow Bay’s win was another Barrow double ahead of the persistent Trooper Thorn ( five points) with the Saturday night hound Mr  Dec in third.

‘Arnie’  was making only his second public appearance off the season but there was support in the ring and that was justified when he won by a wide margin. He sneaked down  the finish even the officials were unaware of his presence Levitate was second a welcome ticket for John and David ,Get Up was third it might have been joint favourite with the winner.

Spare a thought for the four young ladies selling raffle tickets they looked frozen.

Nearly forgot Arnie is another of Kenny’s breed- He politely reminded me.
