Report.

Despite the new water main, that has disrupted the trailing venues from Ennerdale to Egremont,  St Helena went ahead with a shortened finish ,which caused a slight problem as the first two hounds avoided their owners ,ignored the bait tins , jumped the gate, avoided various pieces of equipment and disappeared up the old finish.

Try Again and Celtic Malone were the two culprits –  they finished clear of Serenity and Sental whose owners ‘twoed’ -up to catch them.

Try Again led from start to finish and Galemire Grace who was in third position suffered a setback and found her way back to the field. Latest report says she’s fine but will be on the easy list for a while.

The pups and for the third time this  week a pup maiden lost its status. This time it was Try Time who held on to a length victory over Daisy Dream with Stroll On a distant third.

In the last a four hound finish which any of them could have won ,in the end it was Ian Fleet’s High Stile that got the better of Midnight Show with a ‘fully clothed ‘Free Spirit in third.

Report.. Lightning strikes at Dean.

On a fine ,warm night only six seniors faced the starter and one of those succumbed to the fast going and pulled up after half way. The weather suited ‘Dixie’ and at a generous 4/1 she beat ‘Ted’ and Endure.

In the junior trail and ,once again showing a liking for the course, Irene and Arthur Temple’s Dairy Lightning notched the first win of the season and became the second pup this week to loose it’s maiden tag. Lightning eased up but  had enough lead to beat the joint favourites.

Willow Bay held off the challenge of Barton in the maidens and the consistent Trooper got another three points

Now the last trail and again ‘silent night’. It was a good race  to the line and in the silence of the night ,just the odd ‘hey lass’, that was probable the sixth.

The other five ,what can you say ,hounds were being patted and fussed over because they didn’t win and Quiet Linnet ,she was favourite so she duly obliged whether she was wanted or not.

Time for a look at the Restricted format , perhaps!

Report.  At last the wind had dropped for our first visit of the season to Goosewell farm hidden behind Castlerigg stone circle.

The seniors- and, when they showed on the downhill section of the finish,  the favourite Debra looked all over the winner but she disappeared into the gully and came out third behind the two kennel mates called ‘Jenny’. It was ‘Choice who gained the spoils with a fast diminishing five lengths over ‘Huntsmans’. A fillip for the Patterdale kennel after a harrowing week.

The pup finish was a cracker with the majority of the field in contention up the hard uphill finish. And it was John Loan’s maiden Lone Rebel ( another red’un) that led and finished well to hold off the determined challenge of Huntsman’s Kraka with the ‘ticketers’ close behind.

Phil Graham is having a ‘purple patch’ and once again ‘Toby’ aka Jimmy Choo showed a clean pair of shoes (heels) to his rivals. MInd ,it’s a good job Cartier wasn’t any nearer on the finish,he ‘flew’ up the hill to take second from ‘the force’

Only seven veterans ran and the even money favourite Cinnabar  duly obliged . The eight year old won comfortably from Thorn Girl and Da Look

Glossary; Fillip – what John Crone wants.!

6 ran 4 finished . Time 20. 25.

Report.

Another windy day , fine but on the chilly side for Sunday afternoons  fare from Dean. Only 33 runners for the four trails but that didn’t detract from the afternoons sport and the punters were happy as the results went their way.

In the seniors and once again ‘Arnie’ from Stockdale farm ,hidden between Bassenthwaite and Uldale, scored again, his third win in just over a week, beating the consistent Tan Ted comfortably.

The senior maidens and for the second time this week Phil Graham , the Cockermouth area Chair, was having to tip the trailers, as Flash Dance( formerly Silver Wings) held off the challenge of former kennelmate Trooper Thorn (five points) to win by half a length with another kennelmate Barton in third .

In the Puppy trail Norman and Lynn Brown’s Barrow hound Persian Bay  kept up her challenge for the title with a facile win over the two ‘black ‘uns. Ben 10 and Dairy Lightning.

The pup maidens field was reduced from six to four when two hounds returned to the start and Billy Birkett ‘s Brigham hound Billy Bowe had a keen battle up the long finish with Dearhams Delta Dawn ,he held on to win by a length.

What makes trailing- well Jeanette had three runners -two lasts and one next to last and she was still smiling – her turn will come.

Goosewell tomorrow- prize for the first person to come up with a plausible idea as to how it got its name.

SATURDAY ROUND UP.

The top two juniors both won their respective trails and by about the same margin but the feature of the Coniston trails is that for the second week running identical times have been recorded for two trails at the same meeting. The open maidens and open restricted and the pups and open restricted and only three seconds between them from one week to the next.

At Lazonby Meadow Dixie scored a narrow victory from ‘Razzle’ with ‘Sam’ a close third.

Lone Rebel and The Script finished wide apart but the Keswick hound finished the faster to beat the favourite. The next two trails provided close finishes and the camera was put to good use as well as the camera used for filming for Channel 5 featuring Penelope Keith-Ian Telford -Margaret Baxter-Hamish Rose-Uncle Tom Cobbly  and all.

The seniors at Coniston, under time last week; slipped further back and with the absence of a couple of driving hounds, had plenty to spare -all 42 seconds .Galemire a three length winner from the Troutbeck duo and one hirsute Ladybird in fourth ( watch out) . Jimmy Batty lives in the ‘backwater ‘ of Millom and with neither phone or lap top wont know about this -will HE?

The last two trails went to the favourites and in form hounds Yogi Bear and Jazz Singer ( Cleo Laine plays Jellystone Park}

Now-  the weather- has anybody got an answer to the bloody wind. Windeeze will not suffice.!

PS- Is there any truth in the rumour that a black ‘bus’ containing three characters stayed behind for the rave on Coniston Tops . Let me know under the heading ‘Daisy- Daisy  give me your answer -do!

Report.

Over Honister and into Buttermere for the valleys first trail meeting of the season and not without controversary ,both incidents were dealt with promptly and efficiently by the area Committee ,no doubt there will be those who don’t agree with the decisions and everybody is entitled to their opinion but in fairness the decisions were correct.

The senior trail and in form ‘Arnie’ showed a ‘clean pair of heels ‘ to his opponents and won easily from Westgate Rose . He led through the fell opposite the field but myself, relying on the ‘kenners’ to keep me informed, was told three different names for the second . I think we’ll say it was Quiet Linnet and Serenity, and these three had a nice lead.

The pup trail and it altered when they scaled badly after ten minutes running, they also missed the trod on the finish but eventually the kennelmates ‘Kracka’ and ‘Kooga’ ran on to finish one/two for the Patterdale kennel with Mystery Girl in third..

A welcome success for the Steeles in the open maidens when Miterdale Prim got the better of the reluctant Trooper Thorn [ five points] to win going away in third was ‘Yogi’ who according to the encouragement from the ‘punters’ must have had a ‘shout’

In the last and at the same place where the other trails had scaled these did the same only they made a ‘proper job’ of it ,at one time it seemed that a few weren’t going to climb but eventually they ‘righted’ themselves and on the finish Littman threw away a winning lead by veering off in the last field leaving the way clear for the former Mayor of Cockermouth ,Phil Graham’s Jimmy Choo  to gain an unwanted victory ( no longer a maiden) over Night Vision. Nevertheless the owner gave a substantial tip to the trailers!

Absolutely Baltic on the top of Kirkstone. Still no prospect of packing the thermals away perhaps need to get a few more layers out! Plenty of runners yet again for the Westmorland areas second fixture within the period of three days. First up the senior trail and coming off the first half Little Messi was driving with Thorn Fire for company and Endure and Jazz Singer in hot pursuit of these. Going away from us and the other three began to pull clear of Endure and it was this trio that showed on the finish with a nice lead. Dropping in and Jazz Singer came to the fore and having hit the front the three year old came strongly out of the bottom and up the hill to score her first senior success for Patrick & Jane in good style. Little Messi threw away the chance to be clear in second place and was passed by the Wilson & Stainton’s Flawless approaching the line and in the end had to settle for third.

A top class junior line up and coming past the field the Bland & Barrow’s trio Huntsman’s Kraka, Jenny’s Delight and Huntsman’s Kooga occupied the principle places but Bewitched and Daisy Dream were close in behind and as they went away from us the table leader moved into second place behind Kraka and the field began to get strung out. Into sight on the finish and it was Bewitched that led but she was overtaken by both Daisy Dream and Kraka dropping in and it was DD that jumped the last wall with a couple of lengths advantage and the youngster looked like she was going to increase her advantage at the top of the table but a strong late spurt by Kraka at the line claimed the honours and the Patterdale bitch scored her fifth win by about half a length. Bewitched ran on well for third and Jenny’s Delight who tumbled coming down the trod finished well but could only maintain fourth position.

Denise, Jenny & Dennis registered a winning double when Huntsman’s Jewel took the open maiden honours in very good style. The two year old took up the running from Jimmy Nik as they went past the field and drew away nicely to beat the Langhorn’s Yogi Bear who was always prominent and Carol & George’s Mr Ant.

The preview fixture for the Bitch Produce in a fortnights time and as expected a fantastic turn out of both hounds and followers. The Cunswick trail provides a natural grand stand for spectators and the views of the hounds during the last couple of minutes as they show coming round the wood and up the last few fields are second to none. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and should make for another successful one when it is the big occasion. Well done to Russ & Wendy, the trailers, the scouts and all other helpers not forgetting Danny the gateman.

First up the senior trail and having put Another Bay in for a good look round for the senior maidens – Norman & Lynn came away with the winning ticket. The Brown’s have always had a good record at Kendal venues and having matched strides with Overwater Arnie and Endure all the way up the fields approaching the finish, the three year old made experience count as the other two missed jumping the last wall by going to the gate in the corner and Another Bay finished well to beat the fast closing Jazz Singer by a few yards. Arnie was also coming again and recovered to take third place with Capetown who had led at half way taking fourth, Endure fifth and the Fireman sixth in a good race for all the tickets. That’s the maiden status gone for two seasons – back for the red rosette in the senior trail? Perhaps the open restricted!!

In the puppy trail they went round en-masse and coming onto the finish there was a swarm of hounds. Huntsman’s Kooga led coming round the wood but was headed by Thorn Dancer and the Kentmere bitch looked all over the winner given her finishing speed but she got stuck at the gate jumping into the second last field and dropped back to about tenth place. This left the way open for Norman & Lynn’s other charge Persian Bay who took the last wall just behind Patrick & Jane Laidler’s Jazz Band and then finished strongly to score her sixth success in good style and complete a memorable double for the kennel. Arizona made up a lot of late ground to come through and take third with Jenny’s Delight fourth, Daisy Dream fifth and Huntsman’s Kooga sixth. The other red ‘un Bewitched was also unlucky as she got baulked by the cows. It will be a good race for the Produce Stakes although only two of the six ticketing hounds today are eligible – what would be your choice?

Next the open maidens and Mick & Cyn Moorhead’s Jimmy Nik set a good pace and strung out the field. Coming into sight round the wood and Jimmy had Howgill Benella and Lakeland Jan for company and it was the latter that produced a very good turn of foot and came strongly in the last few strides to record her first win in the HTA for Jim Little of Carlisle. Benella was second and Jimmy hung on for third with Yogi Bear running a good race in fourth for Martin & Alison Langhorn. Barton was fifth and Huntsman’s Jewel sixth.

Last but not least the open restricted and another good race developed. Gordon Tinnion’s Quiet Linnet led into sight round the wood and had Cartier, Highness and Thorn Dolly in hot pursuit. Cartier looked to have scuppered his chances when running on and he joined back in a bad fourth and it was Highness took up the initiative. However, Cartier gradually made up the deficit and was just in behind jumping the last wall and from here Claire & John Crone’s charge stormed home and won with a couple of lengths in hand. Highness took second and Thorn Dolly third with Quiet Linnet finishing fourth. Starlight and Mrs McGregor filled the other places.

PS; The trails realised a profit of over £ 300 for the Kendal HTC .

Report: Dean on a dry night- this was their usual Saturday fixture re- arranged for Thursday evening -hence the four trails.

In the seniors Prudence was expected to enhance her form and  Endure was fancied to stop her winning run and coming up the long incline to the line both hounds along with Tan Ted had every chance but they hadn’t  reckoned with ‘Arnie

who came with a sustained challenge on the ‘high side’ and ‘nicked ‘it on the line.

Blueboy, after a consistent run of form, duly obliged in the senior maidens, to land a ‘touch’ in the ring much to the bookies lament ,he only won by a head from Another Bay with one of Nicola Napier’s in third [ see paper]

The junior trail, and the starting end laid by Darren, his favourite trail because he only walks a ‘cock’s stride’. These were led by a ‘Dairy’ for a good portion and it still had every chance on the finish but Persian Bay ,revenge is sweet, got a yard or two in front and although Arizona challenged she held on to win by a length.

It could have been ‘Chaos’ in the pup maidens but Ben 10 fairly scooted the last few yards to deny the red and white ‘Chaos’ a win, Artist was a close third.

Report : What more could you ask for – Coniston lake in the valley, The Old Man towering above- out to sea and fells and valleys of Langdale and Ambleside.- OH! I nearly forgot- a howling gale and persistent rain, a dark menacing sky. Who’d want to be on Walna Scar in the Summer. 117 hounds that’s who.

They ran that fast to keep warm that the senior trail was under the time limit.

There was a bit of ‘chuntering’, for the sake of 5 seconds, but a time limit is a time limit and that’s that. Ok! there’s is only two official watches but all the unofficial ones recorded the same time.

For the record the first three home were -Pip’s Spirit- Marli – Thorn Fire.

The junior trail, and with a three length victory, the Donaldson’s Daisy Dream took a clear lead in the championship. A generously priced 2/1 shot beat Bewitched and ‘Paloma’

In the impending gloom 44 took their chance in the maidens and on the finish Huntsman’s Jewel had the race won but veered of just before the line and handed the race to ‘hey Rooster, Rooster,  Rooster. A welcome win for Jack and Simone English and according to facebook , the first win of 2015 ,so they are expecting more !

And in the last, the band started to play as, Jazz Singer came away to win by ten meters ,and, the official watch recorded the same time as  the previous trail. Grange Music from the southern outpost of Carnforth was second and ‘bookies hound’ Cartier third.

A thoroughly miserable night and our thanks go to Vic and his son who laid both trails, pulled a camper out of the s*** and then spent the remaining time, before the light went, looking for a lost hound ,Oh! and father ‘Tant’ who was out  scouting.

Report.

A coolish start but getting warmer was the weather for the Whitsuntide Monday trails at Bridekirk nr Cockermouth.

This was the second trail meet this week at Bridekirk and once again, in the seniors most of the ‘driving’ was done by Fireman Sam only for him to give way to Prudence who’s extra turn of foot on the long finish gaining  her another step on the way to retaining the Championship. Endure improved to finish second with the other placed hounds  close behind.

The senior maidens and five hounds had a winning chance but in the last few strides Titanium hit the front and held off a determined challenge from Flashdance aka Silver Wings and Blueboy a close third.

With Arizona lame the puppy trail was at the mercy of Thursday nights runner up Persian Bay and the favourite duly obliged coming clear on the run in to beat Silver Charm.

The pup maidens and the Napier kennel ,who had only twelve runners today, finally got what they deserve ‘ A Winner’ . With the moniker ‘Foxparke’ it was ‘Yankee Doodle who beat The Script by a length with Ben 10 close up third.

Question? was it the town or the pony that was called ‘Macaroni’.

Howgill Blondie came from third place to beat Keystone by a couple of lengths this was her second victory of the week in this grade.

Report.

The odds on favourite Prudence duly obliged with a comfortable win over JLS ,Razzle  Dazzle and Washington were all spaced out evenly behind each other.

In the Juniors four pups showed together through the last gate but ,once more, the odds on favourite Arizona  proved took strong in the final strides and beat the consistent Paloma Faith by two yards.

The ONW -and after the hound catchers had sorted themselves out- it transpired that according to the Script it had won by half a length. There wasn’t a lot separating the ticketing hounds- the favourite ‘Josie’ was unplaced and I don’t think her owner had any bait left.

In the OM the ‘bookies’ hound Cartier and High Style had the race to themselves the former holding on for a length victory .’ Frank’? was best of the rest aka ‘My Way’.

Report: Weather warm and fine and about time.

The downside of the warmer weather -fewer runners. But that didn’t deter from a good afternoons sport.

In the seniors the two bitches Dawn and Grace set the early pace but ,as reported from Mondays trail,   Celtic Malone was now a lot nearer the lead and consequently showed on the finishing meadow with a ‘few yards’ but she couldn’t contend with Dawns finishing speed and the Bassenthwaite hound notched up her first senior success. The two Eskdale hounds ‘Alfie and ‘Gable’ provided the best finish for seventh -‘gable’ won  much to the delight of ‘Liz’-  Alfie-‘ what’s it all about ‘you get nowt for seventh.

First its one then the other- Thorn Dancer–Daisy Dream and Bewitched -whose turn is it?. Yesterday it was ‘Dancer’s turn. She showed on the downhill trod with a good lead but ‘Daisy’ went into top gear and took up the lead entering the gate onto the final straight but she couldn’t hold off the strong finish of ‘Dancer’ and Bewitched wasn’t far back in third.

Garry Woodend’s Bant’s Mist won the pup maidens producing a finishing burst to overhaul ‘Yankee Doodle’ and Mystery Girl to win going away.

And in the final event 37 runners twelve more than the other three trails. Ian and Ann Bell’s Burneside hound Howgill Blondie beat Joanna and Martins Kentmere hound Thorn Dolly by five yards- a bit of a local battle on the fields of Kirkland.

REPORT

Another pleasant evening in the Rusland valley and four good trails – a testament to the well organised and hard working committee and all their helpers. Well done to all.

In the senior trail a good field of 15 and coming off the first half it was Songbird setting the pace with a few yards advantage over Tuesday’s winner Black Eyed Pea. Coming into sight on the back fell and six hounds had pulled clear. Jenny’s Choice took up the initiative over Songbird and Explore and dropping into the last road Songbird once again pulled clear and had a good lead out of our sight. However, Jenny’s Choice and Explore had got back on terms crossing the beck and heading for home and it was Choice that proved the strongest and he went on to open his account with Explore finishing well to take second and Songbird taking third.

Jenny went on to score her first winning double when Jenny’s Delight claimed first place in the pups. Huntsman’s Kraka was installed as the favourite and she had established a comfortable lead dropping in off the fell but once again they bunched up and it was Russ & Wendy’s improving bitch hound Paloma Faith who had been second going through that lead for a long way up the finish but Jenny’s Delight has a good turn of foot in the closing stages and the youngster hit the front close home to also score her first success.

Another good finish developed in the open restricted and the lead changed hands several times on the run in. Any one of five hounds held winning chances but it was the Wilson & Stainton’s pair Flawless and Highness that came to the fore with Tia’s charge just beating Steph’s in an exciting finale. Mrs McGregor filled the other principle place.

Last but not least the veterans and in another nailbiter it was Denis Peare & Jackie Gill’s Valhalla that came through to take up the mantle in the closing stages after her kennelmate Cinnabar had done most of the work. The Little Langdale seven year old just got the verdict by a head over James & Stephen’s Da Look who tried his very best in the last field. Tagget was a clear third

Report:  A fine night at the opening event of 2015 for the Cockermouth and Workington Area but still a bit on the chilly side.

In the senior trail the early work was done by Fireman Sam with Endure and Tan Ted , the remainder were ‘nose to tail’ in single file and within striking distance. (see video)  . On the long run in, and after negotiating the stock , there were plenty with a chance but the trail had taken its toll and the hound with the ‘finish’ was last seasons champ ‘Prudence’ -she came away to win from her old adversary from two seasons ago Meadow Dixie, formerly Cleverly, with ‘ Ted ‘ plugging on for third.

The junior trail and after a ‘fluff’ at the road crossing that put paid to Bracelets chances the way was left open for the in form Arizona and he duly obliged coming away on the finish to win easily. The finishing end trailer got a tip, the starting end got ‘nowt’.

The Non-winners predictably came in a group, all five of them, and emerging from the pack the Irish bred Irish Pride who short headed Cool Return. It was an emotional finish {[ see blog } and typified what the ‘games all about’.

The last trail, in the impending gloom, went to ‘Arnie’ over Quiet linnet . These two were comfortably clear and I”m not certain whether it was a ‘quiet’ finish or perhaps the owners couldn’t see them coming.
