Summary of the first three meetings at Oulton, as seen from a scouts view.
The first three meets at Oulton and out of the eleven trails just one finish was seen but that doesn’t take away the excitement and the ‘crack’.
Endure showed his liking for the course with a treble and the former border hound Showtime showed his dislike , refusing at Raby, on all three occasions,. By the way the cur dogs don’t help, we ,once enticed them with a titbit and put them on leads.
Crazy won all three pup trails, unfortunately the first one was overtime, not for the first time, but once they have had a ‘look’ things improved , just as well as it puts a lot of pressure on the scouts, hounds returning on a fast road on which some drivers take a great delight in trying to break the sound barrier.
It didn’t rain for the all-in on Sunday it absolutely threw it down just as the hounds were slipped, in five minutes there was an inch of water flowing down the road. David Studholme, who doesn’t like hi viz was seen putting on water-wings, can’t swim?
How many pups -24 . Chief scout Harry counts across the first road, all 24 of them in the road at the same time, 25 says Harry, Can’t be ? we will count them across the fields , confirmed 24 by two specialists ( Abacus) . A phone call confirmed 25 but the scouts on the second crossing were unaware, so a car is dispatched to inform the scouts of an extra runner (all in a days work).
At the ‘wood corner’ crossing there is no signal and all communication is by car, so down the road we go to inform the scout that we haven’t a clue where a number of hounds are but to stay there until ‘the cows come home’. That’s Dickie’s Sunday night church service on hold!
By the way the grass is long next to the trod going into the ‘last wood’ ask Keith Smith.
A stranger pulled up and said’ I’ve just seen a tall person walking across the moss ,He was yellow ,wearing an odd cap and carrying a bottle and pulling something, was I seeing things’. No! that was Phil , known locally as the ‘ Cockermouth Canary’
Poor Jazz Band , leads all the way and then comes to that last climb , he probably knows how Mallory felt,
I didn’t mention Grange Music winning the open maidens. living on the outskirts of the HTA, Graham Thornton from Millhead Carnforth has a long journey for most of the trails and a willing helper in the Westmorland Area deserves a little bit of luck and also overdue a win was ‘Scrunt’ aka Bill with Sunset Ridge and not often in the winners enclosure ‘Kipper’ who’s Step Up did just that to win on Sunday.
And finally 142 hounds ran over the three meets and 24 of them were Foxparkes .
