Baz’s October blog.

Into the final month and, with the Senior Championship settled , we still have an intriguing battle for the junior honours.

Will it be Persian bay or Sky, Daisy Dream, Huntsman’s Kraka, Arizona ,Lone Rebel, Thorn Dancer.

Who Knows?

Saying of the week- As one farmer (ish) said to his lady companion ‘ By gum lass thou’s put some weight on’

She replied ‘ That’s not very nice and you  are not so thin  thyself !

Not nice’ he said ‘I could have said thou was gitting  fat.’

No names but if he had a hound it would be called p*** pot.

By the way we all wish Alec Steele a speedy recovery from his horrific accident.

Seaton on Tuesday received a text from Tony Irving relating to ”a good piece of shepherding’

He rounded them up and put them in the right field – as the saying goes .

When there’s a problem ‘ Who do you call? you call Fireman Sam!

Superstition and Sparrowmire Angel are brother and sister , just a slight balls up!

Talking to two visitors at Kirkstone ,when Helen came up and paid to come in, as it was after the first trail she was charged two pounds, one of the visitors said ‘we have just arrived and it cost us three pound’ . talk your way out of that Baz!

Just returned from re- surfacing dubs lane.

Wendy and Russ were the whiteliners and thanks for their input and I apologise to Wendy ,as she was  completing her task- I bent down and ‘trumped’ . right angle ,right distance, perfectly timed and executed with flare and imagination . lol.

Performance of the week – Seniors Low Place -Rooster , Jack was’ cock – a -hoop’ and then realised it will not be a maiden next season.

I knew I’d left something behind – Night Vision’s lead- JOE!

Another one in Hospital – Tommy Newall ,apparently going bionic, we wish him well and the WD 40 is on its way!

Get Better.

On behalf of all HTA members we would like to wish Alec Steele a speedy recovery from his accident.

Baz’s Autumnal look at last week.

Who would be a trailer, you lay the trail, you’ve got to get it right , no mistakes ,you climb a wall ,done it many times ,put your foot on the pig netting ,jump down, easy!. Only this time your foot gets stuck and down you go headfirst into the ground.

Now I’m glad to report that the wall and netting were undamaged as for the trailer, no damage he landed on his head -joking apart – the reality is -He was lucky,

and it just goes to show it isn’t all plain sailing and you look around at the lads and lassies laying the trails and they aren’t getting any younger!

Did you see Phil Graham wearing a Tour of Britain cycling top – he hasn’t got a bike but he said ‘I look good ‘

Talking about looking  good. Les Hudson turned up at Seaton in a bird – pulling Audi TT registration DOL.

Look of the week : Graham at Les – after Huntsmans had beaten Ted for the second time at Loweswater – Les was substitute catcher – It is the only way he can win a trail-catch somebody else’s.

A number of visitors this week : two Americans at Seaton and Aussies at kentmere.

Daftest request of the season attributed to a Mr Riley – No Smoking on a trail field – directed towards Cousin Brown , who immediately lit up a cigar!

Interesting puppy championship ,plenty in with a ‘shout’ if they keep beating each other and Bracelet and Marlou improve, who knows?

Apparently young Whitfield ( taller than his mum) has discovered that video  of ‘Cocky Bilbao’ , can’t believe it – neither can I!

Can you look in the camera Baz? was the request.

C/q the result please.

OK! but it would have been a lot simpler if you had switched it on. That was Half an Hour later after searching for the trail in question !

Driving- I will own up – missed the signs at Loweswater, drove off the road and down the banking then on the way out turned right down the no through road to the lake.

Excellent tea and sandwiches etc at Kentmere and after a c/q it was found that there was one mug missing . The town crier announced ‘ nobody to leave the field until the missing mug is returned.’

Where was it? In my car !

Somebody must have put it there – Honestly!.

Baz’s Birthday blog.

Shock of the week goes jointly to Neil Brown and Billy Birkett on receiving a ‘jolt ‘when touching a ‘live’  gate and also Bill was in the wars when Persian Gold decided to negotiate the small gap between his  legs and gave his ‘meat and two veg’ a nudge , “OW”.

Saying of the week ‘The winner didn’t win’ appropriated to someone who shall remain nameless and the same person has been entered in an event taking place on Saturday at the ‘crab’.

She’ll be the one standing under the’ Westgate’ with her head in a collar.

Keith Lynch’s van doubled in price this week only to go back to its original value when he recovered the prize money from behind the engine. Where there’s a will there’s a way!
Phil Graham last week laid his  fiftieth trail of the season. Phil was chuffed about his achievement until he met Dickie Smithson who told him ‘ 121 in a season beat that’.

The roadside wall collapsed at Eshdale on Saturday. Told Tony it wont take long to repair without  realising that it was rather wide and most of the fallen stone was in the field.

Also ta to those who helped me and la’al Pat to clear the road.

‘Foxparke Invisibles!

We know what you meant – ‘ Would you mind scouting the last road please because the chap who is scouting has ‘parkies’ and needs a break.

If you hear Les Hudson shouting ‘Doll’ when Doll isn’t running ,it is because he calls everything’ doll ‘, that’s according to Jeanette, who I think is blowing up things out of proportion.

Tommy Newall is going bionic and wont be shouting ‘Trailllllllllllllll or judging for the rest of the season, we wish him well and just to squash a rumour John Toni Palmer will not be replacing him as he wont be able to see the tape for smoke!

Baz’s Friday round up of the week.

Another two shows gone by -Lowick and  Loweswater show at Lorton (different parish) ,at least it was only across the road.

Took my grandson for his first taste of trailing, enjoyed himself at Lorton but didn’t see much of granddad.!

By the way Arthur and Irene Temple, who have had a quiet season, thought there luck had turned at Lowick when after finishing fourth and fifth in the pups got first and second prize money.

Also at Lowick, for the first time in my experience, a ‘young lady’ answering the ‘call of nature’ was stung by a bee.  Where was she stung ? you may ask!- well ! according to the local anatomist Wendy Dawson ‘ It was on the’ fluff’.

To save face the lady in question shall not be named but it cooled her passion down. By the way she would have used the show loos but couldn’t find them !

A few achievements last week Da Look winning nine veteran trails in a row . Nicola Napier , five placed hounds at Lortonswater show, Denis and company for perseverance with ‘ Hunters’  Although it is ‘up’ for some it is also down for others , Cathy and Joy, we are with you !

As for coincidences -two senior trails at Kentmere both won by Jenny’s Choice ,both in the same time.

Forgot to mention the ;driving’

Which entrance for Grasmere Sports -‘Top of the hill nearly opposite the lay by. Drove straight past it and last Sunday shot of the A66 at 50 mph towards Whinlatter with the words ‘ nearly missed that turning’

Baz ( nearly 68 ) Slant on the week.

Shock of the week: Imagine sat in your van waiting for dawn to break ,hoping to find your lost hound, when! Clump! Clump!  Shuffle , Clump! ,shuffle, heavy breathing , clump! ,clump.!. Your all alone and afraid of the dark ,what Do you do ?. The van’s locked and then around the corner comes an elderly gent pulling a wheelie bin. The lady in question-Nicola  Napier who apparently suffers from Nyctophobia , hence the new tee-shirt slogan ‘Nycto Nick’.

By the way Foxparke Yankee Doodle aka Flynn turned up safe and sound.

Saying of the week attributed to the steward at Grasmere on Sunday – Question to Martin and Allison Langhorn – ‘ Are you two married’? Answer ‘no comment’ . By the way she was only doing her job, efficiently ,well organised, a bit like the opposition seventy years ago.

And fun and games on the road crossing – one confused motorist completely ignored the standing traffic and tried to ‘jump’ the stop sign. He was advised in no uncertain way by ‘anon”’ in England a stop sign means stop’ Happy Days!.

Sight of the week ; Carol Logan stripped down to her underwear after getting soaked at Bower on Monday and also at Bower . Is it our hound or not? The gypsy boys lost there voices shouting for ‘Joe’ only to find -wrong sex, wrong colour. Ah well ! back to the pub!

And also due a visit to specsavers  -Amy ,standing in for Duncan at Shap, caught and fed Meadow Dixie in mistake for My Way, poor Amy ,out of practice, but a green chest and a pair of balls ! . At least she had his lead more than can be said for Graham Reid.

To run trails you need the cooperation of many factors and on Monday the trails couldn’t be run unless the Eskdale and Ravenglass railway company liased with the promoter to ensure that all went smoothly and it did . Ta !

Back to the start and Mark Steele and Nicola Napier are sat in the ‘travelling dog kennel’. Nicola ‘ Mark I’m afraid of the dark ! – Mark replied ‘so am I’  cue -the bogeyman !.

And by the way if you are not a member and do not follow the sport anymore ,we would love to have you back, if not stop slagging the sport on the social media and for members and followers there are better ways of expressing your thoughts than ‘facebook’.

Baz’s, 119 days to Christmas, blog.

Where shall we start – The mystery of the missing chocolate. As you may know a box of chocolates donated as a raffle prize was found to have been interfered with and one chocolate had been removed. A culprit was suspected but has been released from custody and the blame seems to be directed towards ‘whoever likes chocolates in the co-op’. Watson and Holmes are on the case! Stroll On!

Who? On being told that the ‘lads and lassies were going to Dublin then onto Cork ,inquired I thought they were going to Ireland! No Names to save embarrassment – but how many blondes are there in Eskdale!.

Whilst on the subject of the Irish trip – Allison had to endure a search by airport security . I’m led to believe that security didn’t don rubber gloves and avoided her ‘Tinkerbelle’. Meanwhile Wendy had a bag searched apparently they heard a ‘rustle’.

I don’t know what Lisa has been teaching Acacia but to lie on your back, legs in the air and pee looks like ‘Britain’s  got talent ‘

Got the answer from Nicola as how to remove purple dye from ones person—surgical gloves – don’t get it on you in the first place!

Ricky Deacon is hoping to raise £ 1500 for cancer care ,proceeds from the Wythop trails plus some sponsorship.

We had a slight problem with an awkward jump at Bridekirk – Neil and the boys got it sorted  good job- well done.

Also in the C/W  area we have a substitute judge ; when Fiona is not available in steps’ Fireman Sam’ Aka Tony Irving  .Following in fathers footsteps , perhaps?

To wear waterproofs or not? Timekeeper John had such a struggle to get the trousers over his shoes ,at  Calebreak, that he was wet through when he finally got them on and also when you’ve got them on  the question arises – ‘to pee or not to pee!

Grasmere on Sunday -hence the headline – after the sports we can look forward to Christmas.

Caroline’s navigational skills are improving by the minute, she drove all the way to Kentmere without a hitch ,well ,nearly ,she tried to drive into the Millriggs trail field but  realised the sign said ‘sheep show’ not hound trails.

Baz’s Mid August Slant on what’s going on!

Caroline’s hound trailing skills were put to the test at Wasdale on Monday evening when she was asked to slip and catch a  ‘Foxparke’ . She had no problem, only she had to drive home with purple hands, the dye was on her jeans ,steering wheel ,it was everywhere!

Lowick on Thursday and the restricted trail- now I have been accused of many things but never a jinx but that was the reason ‘Dolly’ won the last as Joanna walked off the line’ Laidler you’re a jinx’.

Wythop on Wednesday – startling turn of foot by the veteran Da Look obviously appreciating the light or precisely the lack of it , personally I think that he didn’t fancy bed and breakfast in Wythop.

A message to J T P- if you want a good solicitor I know one but he’s not as good as mine. By the way tickets for Grasmere are £6 or for a couple of quid you can hide in my boot.

Apparently got the SP wrong on the seniors at Hawkeshead Show all I did was ask one of the few regular punters ‘ what price was Jenny’s ‘  6/4 on was his answer —Sorry!

Spare a thought for Jimmy Batty ;after having made two detours on the way to Wasdale missed entries by 1/2 an hour.

It was reported that Dairy Lightning overtaken by two herdwicks at Wasdale.

Somebody asked ‘did it pen them’?

Bloomer of the season so far goes to  Hawkeshead Show and whoever was responsible for the positioning of the gents toilets , as somebody remarked ‘ a sight for sore eyes ‘

Baz’s Blog – IT’s SHOW TIME.

Firstly on a serious note- the ‘cough’ is about.

Saying  of the week attributed to J T P by way of ID and SD ( to protect there anonymity )  ‘ the second hound is in front’

On being told that his hound, although it was a long way from the trail field , as the ‘crow flies” it wasn’t far. He replied’ my hound isn’t a f******** crow’.! Anon!

Laugh ! Tricia Wilson hanging on to the crowd barrier at Rydal whist I prepared her for the ‘wheelbarrow’ ( no 123 in the ‘Kama Sutra’) and a sight for sore eyes Cath Lister with the loo door open!

Poor Sophie, after Miterdale Force had given her the ‘runaround’ at Cold Fell ‘, Baz, my blood pressure is sky high! Don’t worry Sophie mine has been for weeks.

Nice surprise , won £30 on the Whitehaven lottery,

Walked a quarter of a mile to open two gates for the seniors at Rydal and then watched two of them jump two fences instead of going through the open gates .Sometimes you wonder why you bother!

See the community Police Officers were present at Cold Fell , parked there car on the side of the road , every car that passed slowed to a walk.

The question arose, that was asked a few weeks ago, ‘what’s the mountain called due east ‘ Based on the theory if in doubt ask a policeman! And, the PC’s answer Great Gable ! Wrong!

I ask the Question ‘Where do hounds go’ because at Ings last Thursday a hound was seen within shouting distance of the trail field at approx. 3.45 ,after an extensive search of the area by the owners and helpers and ‘no sign ‘and fast becoming ‘no hope, a shout went up ‘hound here’ and there it was poking its head through the gate in the starting field – the time 6.30. The hound ,in question ,had time to go to Mickledore and back!

An excellent effort to raise £900 at Cold Fell and thanks to Jill for the cakes- for those who bought the fruit cake ,Jill apologies for the crumbly nature and promises next time to use more cement and less sand.

Tommy Newall  didn’t have anything to do at the association trails so he decided to make a few observations and one of them was that hardly anybody used the loos , in fact he only saw one person make the lonely trek in that direction! This was noted and in future we will make sure that the field is nearer the toilets!
