Report. A nice warm evening for the first Cockermouth and Workington trails of the 2017 season . And a little bit of niggle , ” it’s that HTA mixture ! you mean the same formula that has been used for over 100 years is to blame for anything that goes wrong!

Lets look at the times of the trails especially the pup trail ( running for the first time )

2017  – 21.55   2016- 20 -45    2015- 20 27    2014 -19.47           2013 -22.45             2012- 22.00      2011 19.33   2010      2009  17.25    2008- 21 02     2007 22.03.

These are the last ten years which presumably has been run over the same course – the odd one out is 2009 which Dairy Diamond ran in 17.25 but on the Whit Monday trail ran it in over 19 mins.

The average time, taking out the slowest and fastest,  is around 20 minutes, considering the weather, it wasn’t a bad effort.

The rest of the meeting and former puppy champion Persian Bay got of the mark with a length victory over another former champ , Prudence and Miterdale Shadow recorded his  twelfth win when he outpaced the rest of the field putting daylight between him and his rivals on the long finish.

The non- winners and this trail was decided by the cattle, just as the hounds appeared on the finish, they decided to charge splitting them all over the spot, three of the hounds managed to find a way around and claiming a victory was Thorn Dollar caught by a reluctant Phil Graham ( not accustomed to catching winners) in front of Mamma Mary and Bess.

And the all -in went the way of the points leaders Persian Sky and Thorn Fire and that was after an unprecedented scale , lets face it on a nice night there is no point in rushing and it was a pleasant night to take in the view. I blame the mixture! the third trail on the dead rag on a warm night and of course nobody saw the live game, “what live game” ! that which nobody saw !.

The International entry forms are available and trail mixture will be internatiomal  ie Paraffin and aniseed with oil added if deemed necessary.
