Report. After a wet morning the weather changed and the sun shone ( a bit ) on Ambleside and five well organised trails ensued.
Apart from the puppy trail, which in its own way was exciting, there were close finishes .
We will start with the pups and if they had come straight what would the result have been, well it doesn’t matter because they did what they did, it’s history now ,it isn’t the first time that the pups have cocked up the finish ,nor will it be the last. The trail gets paddled about but as they are on the “whistles” they are expected to run straight as did the hounds in the following two trails.
Although it was a bit of a mess it takes nothing away from the winner Overwater Stanley, was he in front? It was a case of I am the Pied Piper “follow me” and follow the leader they did and to me it looked like the hound that took them wrong was indeed first over the line. All I can say with certainty is that Cuchulainn was second and his trainer used to be the trail manager at Ambleside and took it philosophically with ” that’s trailing , that’s Ambleside ! as “beau”went back up the hill .
The day got off to a good start for Alan , Jim and Ann Little’s kennel , incorporating Denise and Jenny Bland, when the first leg of a double, Jenny’s Delight took the senior trail and with it the Jerry Meneaud memorial trophy and £160 when she held off the Borrowdale challenge of Bedazzled by a length,…
The senior maidens and a dual of the “Alfies”. David Crowe shouting Alfie for Come Home Alfie and Mick Moorehead shouting Alfie for Yorkshire Lad. It was a veteran versus a two year old and the old “un proved the stronger holding the challenge of the young “whippersnapper” with Foxparke( Flintstone ) Yabadabadoo in third.
The pup maidens and won in style by John and Val Loan’s Steel End who collared the leader and won by a couple of lengths with Sandyman in third.
The final race of an excellent days sport was the restricted trail and the second leg of the double for Alan Little , when Jenny’ Rose held off the persistent challenge of Sweet harmony with Menorah back in third.
