Report: The second major trail meeting of the season and the first of the two produce events courtesy of the Keswick Area ,held at Latrigg Top Keswick, on a grey , damp afternoon.
The major event of the day was the 2017 Bitch Produce and this went to the Overwater kennel with Overwater Gemini ( Langdale Ranger- Dark Mist) owned by the Irving family, Ike and Sheila Walker. J. Abbott and handled by Emily Irving. The white bitch won comfortably after taking advantage of a scale, which resulted in four of the fancied hounds returning to the start. Second place went to the favourite Crazy and third was Kinniside Mell.
The day will be remembered as ‘ Glenridding’ day as the Bland-Barrow kennel comprising of Jenny’s Delight, Huntsman’s Major, and Jenny’s Rose won three of the five trails, the latter was having only her sixth race of the season and ‘ Delight’ was winning for the first time this season after winning ten trails last season and Major was winning for the fourth time in a row and is a ‘real’ contender for the puppy championship.
” Right Desert wrong tent or right tent wrong desert “: credit where credit is due and Jenny’s Delight has been kennelled in Carlisle this season and trained by the Little family and not only that Jenny’s Rose has been for three years .- So ,with a swift apology an amendment ,we will keep the original script but it should read as probably started life in Glenridding but now reside in Carlisle and as the Joe Cocker song says ” With a little help from my friends”
In the senior trail three hounds established a clear lead , due to poor visibility, identification was difficult but after talking with numerous ‘good kenners’ we narrowed it down to anyone that was entered. The money was on Jenny’s Aura but in the words of Cilla ‘surprise surprise’ it was Ex- kennel mate Jenny’s Delight who came with an unassailable lead , ‘ Aura ‘ was second and the Overwater’s second string was third- Overwater Roger.
The maiden trail and it became plainly obvious that things weren’t going to plan when they hadn’t shown under Skiddaw after 15 mins duration. A number of hounds returned to the start and the rest were spread out like ‘Mondays washing’ as they negotiated the slopes and the numerous runners / walkers/ ramblers/. In the end it was Red Smith’s Accolade that claimed first prize” just” eleven minutes slower than the seniors. The produce was next and was followed by the dog pups and the restricted trail which were both considerably faster ,three and four minutes respectively, perhaps the longer the trail is ‘ on the ground’ the better.
Thanks go to the Keswick Area Committee under the guidance of David ( Spike ) loan , trailers, gatekeepers ,raffle organiser etc and financially the meeting made a small profit.
